Knicks · Biggest need going 4 ward a player who (page 1)
BRIGGS@ 7/23/2015 12:52 PM
Has elite athletism and skills who can use the dribble to make plays. We essentially have 4 big guys locked for 4 years. We need a guard or 3 who can use the dribble to make plays whether shoot pass or drive. I think grant should work as a pg but he's not the athlete nor does he have the offense to help take over periods of games
franco12@ 7/23/2015 12:56 PM
you're not supposed to dribble in the triangle - passing is faster
Agree, we just don't have a player who can attack a defense and create.
I guess Phil or Fisher might say that this is where Melo earns his contract.

After Lebron how many guys fit that description?

I don't think he is describing Lebron.
Larkin would have been, in my opinion, something in the veinn Briggs is looking for.

We need a THJ that plays defense or a JR Smith that isn't effed up in the head. So basically a 2 guard that can shoot the crap out of the ball and plays defense and we also need a true backup center but i'll settle for using O'Quinn and Lou if they sign Ndour.

elite AND skilled athlete who can drive, create and take over games.... Seriously, how many guys fit that description? Grant isnt an athlete? I mean Briggs is talking about pretty much the most coveted description of a wing. If a guy fits that mold he's a top 3 pick.
elite skills, athleticism, can take over games and create.
James Harden Lebron Curry Westbrook Wall Lilliard Kyrie
I mean there are a handful of others but notice a trend?
It like saying "instead of Lopze we should have targeted a bigman with a post game, good passing AND the ability to protect the rim" (AKA Shaq)
Kinda silly IMO

I totally disagree with you about Jerian. He's not a freak athlete but he's certainly athletic enough and he does draw fouls at the rim. Jerian had 11 games of over 20 pts and avg'd nearly 17 ppg on the season at Notre Dame last season. He can score, but he's a team oriented player and isn't a ball hog. Jerian looks for his teammates 1st and that's what we want but he's also got enough talent and aggressiveness to also take over a game.
I also don't really care too much about my PG being a DRose or John Wall in terms of athletic ability. Those guys tend to get hurt more than the guys who play below the rim. I do believe the Knicks are looking for another quick guard who can also breakdown a defender.
As others have pointed out for the most part the Triangle is designed to get scoring without having to always rely on individual breakdown ability. What you want is good passers and great, active wings, who can cut and get to the basket, but of course you do need it against great D. We've got some players who have the handles and athletic ability to get past their man. We just don't have an Elite guy at guard who can do that. Jerian is good enough tho.
Melo and Afflalo are going to be the likely top scorers and have the proven ability to be primary scorers. DWill gets to the basket. Early gets to the basket. Ledo gets to the basket. We also have RoLo and KP who can get to the basket off PnR or post up.

He didn't put the ball between his legs and reverse windmill 360 it, so it's not athletic enough.

I don't need a facilitated dunk to let me know that's grant is a good athlete not a great one I've seen him play dozens of times

Basketball 101....the fundamental issues of obtaining a super athletic PG: 1. They are not available right now and probably don't exist 2. They are injury prone 3. They rarely play a full season 4. They are undersized 2guards 5. They are me first PG guards 6. They have low team IQ
I can go on and on.....Mind you I'm in the athletic PG category in my prime.
Out of all the top athletic free agents....nobody has grants balance of athleticism and floor general. Gerald Green comes to mind....and his value is less than Grant. It's like woman that look for a type of dude all their life, not realizing that dude don't exist.
We can always use more athletes.....but as their athleticism increase......their other basic talents decrease. Anybody with top athleticism, who can shoot with basketball IQ are retired. Bron can't shoot. Melo can't jump. And these are the top nba players right now. Tony Allen is a top athlete....he's a roll player.
Grant is a perfect blend of both.
earthmansurfer@ 7/23/2015 3:06 PM
Shved wasn't an elite athlete, but he sure knew how to break down defenses and pass. Not a great defender but was ok with his length. I think we are going to regret letting him go. Are we going to get something better for the exception? I think we get a vet for that money and he won't be elite.

At 0:36, doesn't it look he climbs the defender with and extra step off his stomach?

I agree. I think it was the defenders folded arm or stomach. I've never seen any other evidence of those kinds of hops from Jerian. Still he's athletic enough IMO

he said for a period- which granted I hadn't read that far.
A Jamal Crawford/JR Smith type of player - yes, they're special, but not impossible to find.
We're rolling pretty much with what we have - I don't see any significant moves.
Briggs is going to have to hope some combination of Melo/Afflalo & Grant can be athletic and attack the defense, creating opportunities.
