Knicks · An open apology to Phil Jackson. (page 1)

I love this and i think a lot of the LOGICAL thinking Knicks fans will be able to relate to this. Haters can just move along please.

I've never said anything bad about pj but I'm concerned about our team speed rebounding and backcourt. I think there are areas of how the game is played we did not address. So while I have nothing to apologize over and appreciate the professional way we are doing things I'll wait for results to offer additional praise
StarksEwing1 @ 7/25/2015 2:29 PM
There is no need for fans to apologize. Personally i think phil has done a good job except the terrible Tyson trade. But i understand why fans vent because lets face it the past 15 years has been miserable as a knicks fan. However i think phil has the team on the right track
TPercy @ 7/25/2015 2:49 PM
Am I the only one who finds it a tad bit annoying that whenever one of Phil's moves is criticized one of the Phil Jackson Worshippers calls the "criticizer" illogical, unintligent, or says that he is crying? common now.

I think that Phil Jackson has done a good job this off season and has put our team in a very stable position moving forward. Just because I don't agree with
-signing lance and Lou amundson prior to summer league
-Derrick williams signing here
-signing Darion atkins(If it is more than a training camp deal)
Doesn't mean that I think Phil sucks or is doing horrible. This is a forum. Everybody here has a bloody right to disagree if we want to. People need to keep that in mind.

Phil has
- Put us in a win win situation with Carmelo Anthony
-upgraded our frontcourt
-upgraded our defense
-given us two cornerstone players
-added high character and intelligent basketball players
I am thankful for that.small disagreements with Phil's moves should not impact overall moves that Phil has done. THAT would be illogical.

nixluva @ 7/25/2015 2:52 PM
I've felt Phil has been mischaracterized by the media and some fans since day one. He's been called a money grabbing phoney and other things. He really does care about rebuilding this franchise. I don't think a lot of people agree with his particular approach to the game so they haven't liked the triangle nor the kinds of players he prefers. This disbelief runs rampant and people aren't confident in his decisions. Only time will tell if he's right.

Building a team is usually a process unless you luck into a KG, Allen n Pierce or Lebron, Wade n Bosh. Phil does have a method to his madness. He's not just throwing crap at the wall. There's logic behind his choices and he's addressing specific areas of need according to the way he envisions this team playing.

newyorknewyork @ 7/25/2015 3:01 PM
Phil has taken a lot of heat for calling last yrs team a playoff team. It was and has been pretty clear to me though that he said that in order to test how the players would respond, then adapted accordingly.
dk7th @ 7/25/2015 3:06 PM
this writer says a lot of nice and accurate things and in snappy prose s well. but he mentions nothing about the potential drama when it comes down to "culture change."

now, we have sent away malcontents and underachievers, with varying degrees and kinds of mental weakness. (i think chandler was a casualty of initially jackson's initially kow-towing to melo (and dolan by proxy)).

and it seems like we have replaced them with players better-suited to the triangle who possess good character.

one wonders how well carmelo anthony buys in and manages to overhaul his game-- somehow "tweak" is not strong enough a term-- to fit in to an anti-woodson team-oriented model. his customary way of playing has yielded a career of underachievement and i have to wonder if he is either willing or capable of making the necessary changes.

1) arrive in supreme condition, maintain it and not put on weight as the season progresses as you always have
2) move and cut without the ball
3) choose only good shots by the result of passing where you can catch and shoot... rather than stopping the ball, dribbling, etc.
4) put as much energy into defending as you do on offense

carmelo anthony needs to show character this season by following these principles. not asking him to be a leader, just a good employee and not generate discord.

Knicks had so many issues when Phil took over the team that it was illogical to think they all can be resolver in one, two , or even 3 years.
I think the progress made is significant and may exceed the expectations for year 1. The upcoming season will show if this is the case.
Many more issues as Briggs rightfully mentioned are still persist. They will need more work and more moves to be addressed.
And we will going to see if new front office is consistent with the strategies laid out by Phil.
All in a all I see some body of work done in consistent manner in a framework of set system design.
This has 1000% more probability to bring respectability and winning back for NY bbal.
Stay the course Phil!!!

nixluva @ 7/25/2015 3:14 PM
Phil has loaded up the roster with guys who will do the dirty work and also play unselfishly. That should have a positive impact on Melo and DWill. That's how you establish a culture change. You either conform or stick out like a sore thumb.
fishmike @ 7/25/2015 4:16 PM
the team is better, more talented, more balanced, younger, has a real pipeline of talent and is fluid and only attached to a pair of reasonable contracts. Now they just have play well.

Yeah there's definitely things that need to be worked on and you need to remember that this team isn't the finished product.

^^^this^^ Well said.

I've loved some of our moves, and truly despised other ones we've made. Overall this franchise has become a joke, and we are lucky to have someone like Phil run the show, even if he is getting seriously paid. If Phil fails, where do we turn to next?? It almost feels like we are exhausting all our options. I can definitely see Dolan taking over again and handing the reigns to isiah if the PJ experiment flops

In what i've seen Phil do so far i don't see any way that he's gonna fail at what he's doing here. He's doing what fans have been asking to be done with our Knicks for years which is rebuilding this team the right way, but now people want to complain about how he's doing it or want to say it's taking to long which is ridiculous. Rebuilding takes time and if you ask me i think he has us somewhat rebuilt and it only took him two years which last year was just about getting rid of the bad players and contracts. I think people should give him until the end of next summer to see what kind of team he puts on the court for the 2016/17 season before judging him on how he's done with the rebuild of the Knicks which is what no other GM wanted to do. Every other GM just wanted to come in and spend all the money they could on big names with bad contracts and that is what got us in such a mess and now Phil is cleaning it up.

i like what phil has done BUT lets see what happens before proclaiming him a genius. I think we are on right track but i need to see results before you get my praise

Very early Phil kept saying that he wanted to see who was a learner and who wasn't. He viewed it as a trial at the beginning of the year. Clearly the team failed and he's pretty much revamped the roster. Now this process is all about refining the roster with his players over the next few seasons.

When he stated his experiment failed. Underachieveres like JR and Bargs would have to play close to alstar level in order for us to have been a playoff team. Shumpert would also need to bring his game to another level. Melo would need to use the tri to get way easier looks raising his overall efficiency. All these guys have talent. So it came down to mentality.

I think Phil tried to get them to buy in by giving them the goal of playoffs and publically endorsing them.

Or maybe the experiment was flawed..You can't subtract talent and coaching ability from a team that didn't make the playoffs the year before and then think the same team with less talent and coaching ability will make the playoffs...Either some one is drinking their own cool aid or they are not capable of appropriately assessing what's necessary to build a playoff team...

he's allowed to make bold assertions just like every other gm or president who is clearly in rebuild mode. walsh used the words "competitive" during the previous phase of roster teardown.

in case folks haven't noticed-- the knicks narrative has changed from "win-now with melo" to "rebuild a team and expect melo to buy in" to what the new regime is trying to do.

Well, no matter what direction you take, there will be expectations..You can't hide from expectations..With bold assertions comes bold expectations...You can change the narrative all you want, in New York, the clock is always ticking, ask Walsh...We will revisit the narrative when we don't make the playoffs again and don't have a draft pick to speak of...
