Wow, another contemporary gone. RIP Roddy Piper.

I'm involved in HS wrestling, but never really watched the fake stuff much.
Always remember him from the 1988 movie They Live, a decent and underrated John Carpenter SciFi movie that came out during the end of the Reagan presidency.
Keith David, one of the stars of the movie opened up a conspiracy about its fate (IMDB forum.2013):
He said in a recent interview that when the movie opened it was number one for two weeks in a row, and then it was gone from theaters. You couldn't see it if you wanted to. When he asked Carpenter or someone (i forget who) about it, the reply he got was "I think we pissed somebody off"
Still pertinent today- worth a look if you haven't seen it yet.
Bearded Man: They are dismantling the sleeping middle class. More and more people are becoming poor. We are their cattle. We are being bred for slavery.

He was great in the movie "They Live". He was a big part of Saturday morning cartoons with Wrestling All Stars which I used to watch when I was a kid.

How many younger people have no idea what kind of legend this guy is? Back in the day people liked WWF just as much as any sports maybe more.!

I am still a fan of it. A good portion of the talent were greatly influenced by him.
He was damn good. RIP.

One of my favorite movies and movie lines of all time. I was happy to see him come back in a few Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes too. Sad news.

Sad news and wow, what a great great movie.
Walt - Thanks for the mention of the movie pissing off some higher ups. When I watched it I wondered about the clear overlays to society. Very strong message in the movie regarding TV, Consuming, working, etc. It is no wonder it went from number one to... and it's gone!
If anyone has not seen that movie, WATCH IT! It is extremely enjoyable and takes you back a bit...
Great guy, he will be missed. EMS

Haha, great movie -
Didn't they fight for like 25 minutes in a street alley because the dude would just not put on the sunglasses?
Actually I think the creators of the video game Deus Ex ( who later made Bioshock IIRC) said that They Live was one of many influences on the game.
gunsnewing@ 8/1/2015 10:41 AM
I bet Carpenter was a big fan of The Twilight Zone when he made this movie. Those social issues are definitely prevalent in the world today

I remember watching Piper back in the late 70s, early 80s. Was a great villain, first tate trash talker during interviews. Loved watching Gordon Solie interviewing him.
I never get tired of watching "They Live". Carpenter said in so many words that the film was about greed, not an indictment of capitalism. I doubt an A list star could have made the film as fun as Piper did. BTW, the bluray of "They Live" looks really good. You can tell as soon as you see the red train at the start of the film.

I cant believe it, very very sad

He was one of my favorite Wrestlers. Mostly because of his character, who I loved to hate. My earliest memories are of Chief Jay Strongbow and Bob Bachlund when I was young. A lot of people forget the early days before the big money. Roddy was a classic wrestling personality. Sad to see he's gone.
