Knicks · Phil: Knicks signed Rolo over Monroe so Melo can play power forward (page 1)

“One of the reasons why we really thought Robin would be the best fit for us as a center was that it would allow us to be more flexible as a team and Carmelo can play more of a ‘4’,” Jackson said on Friday. “As opposed to maybe a Greg Monroe who is not the same size, not the same defensive player.”

The Knicks have had success with Anthony at power forward in recent seasons. Last season, they outscored opponents by 5.7 points per 48 minutes when Anthony played power forward, per 82games.com. They were outscored by 7.2 points per 48 minutes with Anthony at small forward.

Just how much Anthony's position on the floor factored into those numbers is up for debate, of course.

Jackson said on Friday that nothing has been determined regarding Anthony’s position this season.

The Knicks have multiple power forwards on the roster (Kyle O’Quinn, Kristaps Porzingis), so it may make sense to have Anthony play small forward often this season.

“A lot of how Carmelo is going to approach the game is who’s going to guard him and the matchups that go along with that process,” Jackson said. “One of our reasons to get [free agent Derrick] Williams was the fact here’s a guy 6-8 who can play 3s, 4s, interchangeable, has the speed and activity to play with or for Carmelo in any situation.”

In theory, putting Anthony at power forward allows him to use his speed to get

The context of what Phil said is contrary to the title of this thread...Phil was asked by Herring of WSJ if Melo will play PF now that there is a rim protector...Phil essentially said that we have many pieces that are interchangeable which is what we want..And who plays where will be determined in training camp...And that goes for everyone including KP, DWill, O'Quinn, Seraphin...Phil also said it comes down to who will guard Melo...

Begley had nothing to write about...

It's all about flexibility and fit. Drafting KP made Monroe less appealing. Fish will have lots of options as many of these forwards can play SF, PF or C. Actual positions on offense are less important than who guards who on D! RoLo is about being able to anchor the defense no matter which position Melo plays.

On offense DWill is interchangeable with Melo between SF and PF. KP should be able to do PF or C. You have good coverage between RoLo, Melo, DWill, KP and O'Quinn.

Didn't see the press conference so I will defer to you in regards to context.

So what I am hearing is that Williams and Melo could start together???

You are hearing nothing... holfresh and nixluva cleared it up if you needed clearing.

Basically training camp and match ups will determine what happens worth the lineups. Training camp hasn't started and no games have been played.

So just Netflix and chill until Monday

he drafted kris, who has length, and then decided on lopez, who has length but is also an underrated rim protector. jackson prefers defensive length and he'll try to get that wherever and whenever possible. remember jordan, pippen, ron harper? the goal is to get kris and lopez to play together as much as possible, especially at the ends of games. galloway has length and decent lateral quickness.

conclusion: if kris and lopez are on the floor a lot it means that melo will need to slide to the small forward, and, if i am correct, will need to play off the ball on the weak side a bit more than he is used to.

We didn't sign Rolo over Monroe. Monroe rejected us and our fallback option was Lopez.

Right. DeAndre Jordan didn't choose the Knicks and Lopez was the fallback.

Totally forgot about DeAndre (which is amazing considering how bizarre his offseason was).

Phil didn't really want Monroe. The evidence is too clear that Phil was most serious about DeAndre and RoLo. In the end he got one of the bigs he wanted. It's all moot at this point. It only matters to those who want to continue to take shots at Phil for whatever reasons. I'm tired of the petty Phil bashing. At this point it's all about the results from here on. It's good to have the season upon us and actual basketball to talk about soon.

It also matters to the ones hell bent on defending Phil.

I don't think I'm a defender - but I think Phil probably did prefer Lopez & everyone they got over signing just a big name for the sake of a big name.

I think the smart move was to phil holes- and we had many- with players that aren't sucking up 35% of the cap to do so.

We never made a bonafide offer to Monroe is my understanding.

Only the media seems to slam Phil for not getting a star.

I can't get passed the fact people think Monroe is a star.

So Phil made Monroe his 1st priority because he didn't really want him. Okay, got it.

Actually Frank Isola said Monroe was the Knicks #1 priority. Monroe said himself he never wanted to come here. He was never on our radar cuz he doesn't play defense

Phil intimated that it was Monroe's Agent that wanted the Knicks involved early and so Phil did that favor. There's more to playing the GM game than is clear on the surface. I Think it also played into Phil's purposes to let things play out the way they did. IMO based on everything we know I'm convinced Phil didn't really want Monroe. We drafted KP and Willy and made serious efforts to get DeAndre and RoLo. They are the Defensive bigs Phil stated over and over were his priority.
