Knicks · why does everybody want J grant to start at pg (page 1)

knicks1248 @ 10/16/2015 2:25 PM
You really want to bring calderone off the bench, as what, energy, scoring, something he clear doesn't have in abundance. You want to rely on him to bring us back from 15 down, he's not going to get you quick scores, i mean he barely runs.

I just think Grant, Galloway, Dwill ks and quin make us really good off the bench. You can literally swap out the starting 5 and run those guys for 13 minutes straight, and not miss a beat

Developing early momentum instead of playing catchup!

Calderone is the lone reason, we can't put Jerian in the starting lineup.

Not that he's that good, it's because he's just that old and bad. He doesn't mesh with Dwill and Galloway and KOQ/Seraphim.

Since Calderone operates at negative speed, he fits in better with the slow lineup of Melo and RoLo. Afflalo and KP could probably fit in any style, walk it up or uptempo.

He's such a waste of space...unfortuntely we don't have another PG on the roster to turn to, without unbalancing things. If we had half a shell of a skeleton of a shadow of a decent PG on roster, Jerian probably starts, but we gotta wait until the inevitable Jose injury or waive/trade to happen first.

Not that I do want to start him, but in the normal sense of "May the best guys start" I have to say the kid might deserve it.
That said, Jose really adds that calm his veteran years bring, and he can shoot well. Grant can't shoot like him, but he can create his
own shot a lot easier and is excellent at driving and scoring, getting to the line, dishing out assists, etc. He is a talent.
Calderon can't defend anyone for the most part. Grant is actually good considering he is a rookie. Lots of room for improvement.
I have to say, have you seen him lead the team and dish? At this point I'd say he can dish better than Jose and in way more ways.
The kid is just plain the best PG on the team. Not sure about moving Gallo to starting lineup though, if Grant goes. Maybe they play better off each other.

I think keeping the quick 2nd unit together is probably better for now. Let him get more comfy going up against backups and then
maybe we can do the occasional start (lower pressure) and see how he does. Same goes true for anyone on the 2nd unit who really performs.

This is a new team and the guys' play should, to a point, determine the starting lineup and bench. Sure, play some matchups on occasion,
but I think we also need to show that those who do the best start (again, to a point. If moving Derek to the starting lineup or Grant
messes with chemistry, then be careful of pushing a bad car down the street.)

edit - Two articles about starting Grant. (You see this? )

Kid may deserve it, but at first it'll be easier for him to get used to the league against other teams' second units and come in as a change of pace guy.

Calderon is not bad - he's not as terrible as you guys make him out to be. I think Grant and Calderon should be in a straight platoon to start - 24 min for Calderon 24 min for Grant. By the end of the season, maybe it's 30min for Grant and 18 for Calderon.

No need to rush things - this is about having patience and developing things the right way.

Calderon's job is to run the offense at the start - get Melo and Afflalo and Porzingis all going and hit open shots. Grant will lead the second unit, get Galloway and DWill and K'OQ and Seraphin going. Grant will get that second unit running up and down the floor. The first unit is not really built to do that.

I would like to see calderon at the 2 as a spot up 3 point threat. He has got to still be one of the best 3 point shooters in the league.

crzymdups @ 10/16/2015 3:25 PM
Best thing I saw from Calderon is that he got Robin Lopez some easy buckets in that Philly came when Melo was being overplayed by Covington. Calderon is a smart PG. I think he'll help KP's transition and with Afflalo creating spacing and being a (hopefully) reliable threat from outside... I think it's a good group for Calderon to work with.

We've already seen how well Grant and Galloway and Dwill and O'Quinn can play together.

I think having a consistent rotation and a strong but different first and second unit will only be a benefit this year.

both of you... good points. I agree with splitting minutes, that Calderon has value (more than given around here) and I think they can play together in 3 guard sets with Jose at the 2. When he's feeling it his stroke is sick. He's also a GOOD basketball player. A vet who is smart and saavy. Funny... some of the same guys that think Calderon has nothing to add are the same ones that give Jason Kidd all the credit for the 54 win season.

I dont expect much in this world... seeing is believing, but I have SEEN enough of Jose to EXPECT him to have a very good bounce back year. 10ppg, 5assist, very low TO, shoot around 50%, get some steals and be a positive +/-

Another wild willy nilly prediction from fishmike

I don't want him to win the starting job yet. I want him to start a game or 2 in the preseason to see how he works with the first unit. His passing could give Melo, KP and AA easy open shots or he could defer, like most young PGs do, to Melo and just feed him in Post ISO situations. The only way to find out which Grant will do is to see him with the starting unit. If he plays like he does with the second unit then we could really have something good on our hands.
fishmike @ 10/16/2015 4:27 PM
One option would be to use Grant as the 6th man. He could come in literally for any starter of the Jose/AA/Melo/KP/Rolo line up. He could replace Jose with a more athletic defender. He could come in for AA. We could go 3 guards if Melo had early foul trouble. Move Melo to the 4 if he subs for KP, or go fast with KP at the 5, Melo at the 4 when Grant subs in for Rolo.

Lot of options, all seem pretty good.

callmened @ 10/16/2015 4:37 PM
because i dont want jose on the team. lol

Suddenly the Knicks are deep with a strong second unit. If the starters are Melo, Afflalo, Calderon, Lopez and KP,
Then Williams Grant Galloway OQuinn are in the rotation. That's 9!
Vujacic and Seraphin will get playing time but time is suddenly tight and Vujacic is gonna play some. By the way, Early too is riding the bench and he's clearly improved

Early may have cracked the rotation. He looked grat tonight. The Knicks could have 4 first or second year guys in the rotation.
Knicks1969 @ 10/16/2015 11:45 PM
Grant is symposium the better PG. he is taller, faster, and is less cautious
TheGame @ 10/17/2015 4:17 PM
I don't want Grant to start. By March he might be ready to start, but he still has some learning to do. Calderon should start with Grant the primary backup. Galloway should play more SG. Sasha should be the fifth guard.
