Knicks · The Inevitable 'Can Porzingis Be Voted To the All-Star Game?' Thread (page 1)

bigbasketballs @ 11/20/2015 10:26 AM
Last year James (of course), Melo (infamously) and Pau Gasol were the leading EC front court vote getters.

There aren't many big name/marketable EC front court guys.

Gortat finished 4th. Bosh was 5th and Love was a distance 6th.

If Porzingis continues to break through as the most high-profile/marketable/biggest novelty (if not best) member of his draft class, could he overtake Melo and/or Gasol?

Hey, someone was going to bring it up eventually…

One very good game doesn't make you an all star. I just want him to help us make the playoffs, remain healthy and keep working hard, the rest will handle itself.

Merit doesn't make you an All-Star. I'd agree, waaaaay too early.

But fan voting does.

knicks1248 @ 11/20/2015 10:44 AM
who's buying his jersey, knick fans and NyKers? The knicks don't have that many national games to begin with, even a game like tonight against a marquee team and a big market team, we are not on prime time.

If he can follow that last game up with another gem and win in OKC, it's just another step in the right directin

Knixkik @ 11/20/2015 10:49 AM
Hopefully he is playing at a consistent All-star level by year 3.

Weren't you just scolding people in the Towns vs KP for jumping the gun? Now you are talking about KP in the NBA All Star Game in his rookie year? Should Towns go too? His numbers are certainly better today

I'd rather him make it on merit than on surge of popularity.
He'll be in the rookie game.

Not a skills/play question. I'm not in any way suggesting he'll be named to the team by the coach or that he'll deserve to be on it by merit, which I highly doubt.

This is not a "is/will Porzingis PLAY at an AS-level' question. He will not this year, may not for several years, may never.

This is a pop-NBA culture/marketing question.

He's becoming a thing. He's becoming a novelty. There are shades of Linsanity beginning to occur. And again, I'm not arguing it's justified by his play on the court. But KP is becoming a breakthrough thing.

The question, not that statement, was will this fan/media novelty be enough to influence what is a fan/media novelty process?

An answer of 'no, I believe fans vote on solely on merit' is perfectly legitimate.

Can't wait to finally see one of our cornerstone rookies dominate the rookie game!

His numbers don't matter so much, as it is (unfortunately) a popularity contest, right?
But, I hope he does put up great numbers. Would be great for both NY and the NBA.
gunsnewing @ 11/20/2015 11:34 AM
KP ve Towns head to head baby!

That is the gist of the question.

The east doesn't have a lot of brand name front court players.

I think that he makes the all star team. Again, people are misreading the OP. Its not about being deserving. Yao ming got a billion votes cause there were a billion voters.

If I were to guess, KP may be in the top 3 of who fans want to see. Remember he is unique like no other.

If a guy came to the league and he was 8 foot 5, he would get voted in obviously.

LOL with the billion voters, but true.

Regarding 8 foot 5, just know, KP is not done growing yet.

But seriously, I would not be bothered by KP making the all star game. At the rate he is going, he can be a real contributor and this is entertainment after all.
Just a fun fun cat to watch play and his skill level is just amazing. Hope he stays healthy and I really look forward to what he can become in his prime. (That is a scary though I tend to stay away from.)

FireWoodson @ 11/20/2015 12:53 PM
Believe it or not, they already have a movement going in Latvia to make sure he is voted in as an All-Star. Foreign vote is strong. Yao Ming got voted a starter and he was injured the entire year! Porzingis is going to be voted in. He's already commented on this, said he hopes to make it on his play and not from a flood of foreign votes.

Not a big nation, but they will all sit at their computers and vote multiple times. What else they got to do there?

mreinman @ 11/20/2015 12:56 PM
votes are not gonna be coming from latvia
yellowboy90 @ 11/20/2015 1:00 PM
Since they are just doing front court players it will be hard.

James, Melo, George, Giannis, Gasol, Horford, Millsap, Drummond all stick out

I understand there is already a movement among NYC short, bald, stocky men to convert to Latvian Orthodox in honor of KP.

You know who the leading vote getter for last year's NHL All Star game was? A nobody named Zemgus Girgensons. Want to take a guess where he is from?
I'll give you a clue...starts with L and ends with atvia.
Don't question me again.

None got many votes last year.

Was James (then big drop off), Gasol (another big drop off), Melo, Gortat, Bosh (big drop off), Love.

Atlanta guys were non-factors.

Drummond was the biggest non-factor, but his star is on rise.

Valanciunas may be a factor considering game is in Toronto.

fans could give a crap about seeing Horford and Drummond get rebounds.
