No, they have his early Bird rights and given he already had two years service time before they got him, that means he's unrestricted.
So they essentially have nothing. They don't have matching rights. They can only re-sign to 175% of his 2015-16 salary or 104.5% this season's average salary.
He gets a big contract, they have to use cap room to sign him. If they have Melo-Wade-Bosh-Dragic on the books, Whiteside is gone unless he plays for the average salary for at least 2 years.

This is supposed to be the part where you acknowledge along with the rest of the basketball world that already knew all this that Miami will have a difficult time retaining Wade and Whiteside as is.
Adding Melo to the mix makes it a non-starter making the premise collapse upon itself.
Only way Melo goes to Miami is if Miami chooses to prioritize him over retaining Whiteside AND paying Wade AND having a bench.

My plan would be to try and trade for a PG that can break down the D and hit a decent amount of outside shots. I would hold off on trying to trade Melo until after the offseason. If Melo and KP can't attract any good free agents then it is time to move on from Melo and build around KP.

Miami has enough talent to win division that they dont need Melo. It's actually the opposite way around. Melo could defintely use Wade to make the playoffs but that aint happening. Find all this hypothetical trade talk just talk and if this forum needs more sensationalized hypos then the only team that may ask Phil about a healthy and productive Melo is hometown Washington if they continue to struggle because there are possible fits

Everything about that contract simply says Melo is here to stay and that was his choice. A grumpy post game interview where he's pissed about not getting calls and losing in general does not mean a player wants to move his life to another city. When I get pissed because the town I live in gave me a parking ticket my wifes first reaction wasnt an assumption that I want to move the family to Florida. Thats what this thread is saying. So true .. we could use all of D.Wade many star-skillz to guide KP, Gallo, and Grant youth talent into future winning talent. Having Wade at SG would give us a chance at letting Gallo play the point for longer periods a game, plus increase the 3rd option scorer with Wade pushing n passing.

I see KP increasing our chance at signing a veteran starter PG in the offseason, also in a starter PG wanting to be traded to the Knicks on the deadline .. it's the only reason i could figure on why Fisher been increasing Calderon playing time minutes, is to increase Calderon trading-value
I can only see a trade if we were one trade away from becoming a real contender. And we are not.
Don't see panic moves for the sake of playoffs. Phil would not want to send a message to KP that he's developing too slow, so we panic.
Phil is more likely to let this season play out, let KP get acquainted with the league, the teams, the players, the workload, the travel - and then see what kind of FA can be lured in over the summer.

I see Jackson making some change to roster with an eye towards tomorrow whether that be either acquiring a draft pick, a young developing player or clearing more room ala Calderon for a 16-17 free agent. Affalo, Calderon and Seraphan have all raised their trade value somewhat to on the cusp contenders. Galloway and Oquinn might net a marginal return. Wouldnt say Williams is untradeable but wouldnt be easy to move his overpayment. Could see Washington asking about Melo but see him staying put and Phil adding a third player next year via FA
HELLO the Clippers! Doc Rivers is a terrible GM and if there is any contender that would overpay in a trade to improve their bench, it'd be them. Give them Calderon, Seraphin and Early and take back a first rounder during the year the Clippers will miss the playoffs. To balance the deal money wise, I'd take back Lance Stephenson and their 2014 first round pick, CJ Wilcox. I'D IMMEDIATELY WAIVE STEPHENSON WHO IS JUST AN EXPIRER and then move on with my day.
