Knicks · Trying to be patient with Fisher, but if..., who should be the coach? (page 1)

Chandler @ 12/11/2015 1:26 PM
I have to imagine under no circumstances, short of player mutiny, will we see a change mid-season. So against the zen, building a winning culture, ethos

But if Phil decides that Fisher had enough of a sample size and he's not the right guy to be a champion coach, then who?

Luke Walton?
Some other ex-Bull, or ex-Laker, where is Paxson these days?
someone from the Spurs system (which is close enough to triangle in at least being religous about ball movement)?

No re-treads please, e.g., Shaw, Jackson

ChuckBuck @ 12/11/2015 2:33 PM
Luke Walton is the obvious answer. Likeable hustle team player, and seemingly likeable assistant coach.

Mad Dog Madsen another possibility. Jim Cleamons, Chuck Person, Pete Myers? The apple would have to fall from the Triangle tree.

crzymdups @ 12/11/2015 2:41 PM
I think if Fisher were to be let go in-season, Rambis would be the obvious interim. Not sure if he'd get the top job.

Luke Walton is interesting is we're sticking with the Triangle. Though not sure how much coaching he actually has to do with that roster and the fact they've been playing together four-five years and Kerr installed so much of what they do.

Nalod @ 12/11/2015 2:42 PM
No retread? That's Fish.
What we really don't know is what is wrong with knicks.
And are they really that bad, or was the 2 games over .500 a false water mark and thus we have inflated expectations?

Who should coach? Depends on who or what is the problem. Lots of season to go and lots of things can happen.
Personally I did not expect to be god awful but I was not expecting playoffs.

Obvious because what the Champion Warriors are doing is obvious. In fact, if its not transparent, you can't see a thing.
He is likeable cuz winning is attractive. He would have been with Kerr.

I like Walton, maybe he can bring the reigning and front running MVP with him too?

Phil Jackson in his coaching prime, couldn't light a fire under this team. Our talent level is overmatched with most NBA teams......It's just that simple. So the best way to improve your team, is to add some more hustle guys. NBA athletes who can run, press and create turnovers.....Don't worry about shooting or dribbling. Thats why I thought the Greek Freek II was the perfect compliment to this team. We need that type of defensive intensity and athleticism.

Surround your skilled guys (Melo, KP, AA) with junkyard dog type of energy.....

Didn't even mention the Warriors success, just the fact he's young, bright, and has coaching experience NOW.

Fish was a literal Fish out of water, no coaching or management experience at all. Kerr had GM and personnel experience in Phoenix before he accepted the GS job.

Luke Walton would probably be top 3 coaching candidate for the Knicks even without me typing, due to Phil's familiarity with him and his knowledge of the triangle.

Fish never coached before??
I'm talking about the Brian SHaw's and Mark Jackson's of the world

helloharv @ 12/11/2015 3:25 PM
Boston hit a homerun with Brad Stevens ---- we need someone that has actually been a high level successful coach ------- not someone that literally never coached before in his life like Fisher

Kobe has so little patience for players who can't play the game on his level. I think he'd be a terrible coach.

You all already know my views on Fisher (THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMES)
Cartman718 @ 12/11/2015 4:31 PM
i think we need to hire a college coach.

I'm talking about the Brian SHaw's and Mark Jackson's of the world

Mark Jax won 23 games his first season. We already won 10. Jax is not fit to be part of an organization given his personality and he proved himself of this in Golden State.
Brian Shaw struck out in Denver but to his credit he lost his GM and they changed direction on him. If you read what makes SAS so good and what Golden State Myers who came from there has said that whole chain of command has to be on the same page and be trusting. Shaw lost that in Denver.

So basically this "lets change after 6 weeks" is totally against what most good teams have done in the past. Kerr succeeded in GS because he was compatatble with what they wanted, had been part of the chain in PHX (Welt, the GS president came from PHX) and Kerr was friends with the owner. Jax was not in synch with this. He was an early hire by GS but the culture around him changed.

IN NY, you have a chain and personel in place that is committed to building this. This is why when fans start recommending someone its not with thought. Now, if Fish does not want to coach anymore or comes to a crossroad in his life that he feels he made a mistake then yes, Im all for the change. Since I don't have any inside information I can't really speculate on whats going on if anything is in fact going on.

Brian Shaw did have assistant coaching before he took over Denver.

I agree Fish is not a finished product, but unless you want a retread then this is the kind of guy who is learing on the job. Brad Stevens in Boston is on record saying his first year was a learning experience and he did not do a good job and he was a head coach in college!!!!!! He is growing on the job!!

Keep replacing guys after a bad 4-5 games? I don't think that's a good way.

Chandler @ 12/11/2015 5:03 PM
I think you totally misread my post: twice

I said I don't want a retread, e.g., Jax or Shaw

You called FIsher a retread, and I corrected you. He's not a retread. This is his first gig.

And I also said I didn't expect Phil to do anything mid-season

Knicks1969 @ 12/11/2015 5:19 PM
I will endorse Fisher if he shows the following:

1. He can change the starting 5 to fit Carmelo and KP. Before the start of the season, many of us knew the addition of Calderon was going to cause more harm than good. The starting lineup is our money lineup. It needs to be quick and tough. My choice to replace Calderon is Grant, but I can see why many would much rather have Gallo. To replace RoLo, I would go with KO, because there is no way we can have KP guarding centers this early. However, Williams to can bring a certain intangible to that squad that could make it a success. He is an athletic freak, and can run the floor with gosto.

2. Find ways to balance the second unit. Add Calderon to it to play strictly as a SG; and RoLo to solidify that front line. Grant or Gallo can share the back field with Calderon, but Calderon has to play off the ball.

If Fisher can simply do that, I will endorse this dude regardless of the record.

CrushAlot @ 12/11/2015 5:59 PM
I think Fisher minimally gets this year as the coach no matter what he does. If Fisher leaves the bench my guess is he would be re-assigned to work in the front office with Phil possibly even as the heir to Phil's position. I don't know who Phil would bring in. He seems to rely on a small circle of candidates that he has connections with. I would prefer Shaw as the lead assistant. Not sure that he would be better than Fisher.
nyknickzingis @ 12/11/2015 6:06 PM
Luke Walton has Andrew Bogut, Dray Green, Harrison Barnes, Klay Thompson, Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala. The Knicks have 2 players as good - Porzingis is as good as Dray, and Melo is better than Barnes. But Lopez < Bogut, Afflalo << Thompson and Calderon <<<<<<< Curry.

The Knicks team has 30-40 win type of potential, not until Porzingis can drop 25 points every night can that increase. Sure Fish is making some key mistakes - and the biggest being allowing the Knicks to play a way that hurts their odds at winning. But this team isn't a contender and isn't supposed to better than 10-14. I'd say Fisher is average, and has improved from last year. We'll see where he's at next year, but it's also about talent. The Knicks have to upgrade their talent and need players like Porzingis to become HOF like to have a realistic shot at being an Eastern Conference contender.

I'll endorse him when he learns that it's more to adjusting than flipping your damn rotation every time a player hits a few buckets in a row, then all of a sudden he's a rotation player.

Fck fisher, were better than our record, and the players are better then their shooting % indicates, and they have already proved it. Players come under fisher and their career have gone south, and he has made just about every player his coach, horrible.

Maybe if he we start winning i'll give him his dues, but until then..Nathan
