I must admit that those stats are quite stunning. I knew he was defending better but didn't realize it was that good. I'm glad Melo has stepped it up. Now if we can get just a little help from Phil on the roster this team might actually do a little something this season beyond just some solid player development. I'd hate to waste a very good season if they can actually get into the playoffs. It would just be a very nice learning experience for everyone on the team not to mention nice for the fans. Who knows if Melo can keep up this level of D and for how many years. This isn't exactly Win Now but still would be nice to win just a bit more this season.

Specifically, yes.

But we've also known for some time this season that the Knicks have been rated among top 4 or 5 NBA defenses overall . . . and top 1/2 in shooting percentage defense.

This is a significant Triangle Culture achievement -- it's one of the fundamental goals that Phil Jackson had set.

It's a great foundation for being a playoff (and better) team . . .

I know, I know . . . it's hard not to feel that way.

This has been about as good a success for Triangle Culture as we could have EVER expected this season.

I mean, come on (!) Who among us could have imagined a top 4 or 5 rated defense this year (?)

So the tendency to want to have something else to show for it (a playoff spot) is pretty strong.

Darn it . . . can't we just snooker someone out of a good PG with some Gasol-like trade (?)

But okay, let's just keep on "In Phil We Trust"-ing . ..

Based on what? Their defensive ranking (based on on points allowed per 100 possessions) is 16th out of 30. If this team had a top 4 defense, I don't think it would be at .467 right now.

Currently Knicks are:

** 1st in NBA in 3 point FG% defense
** 6th in NBA in 2 point FG% defense
** 4th in NBA in adjusted FG% defense

That's not everything . . . but it's not nothing. I'll take it.

I dont think the Knicks are 6th currently in 2pt defense. i know they do allow alot of points scored considering how slow of a pace they play.

but we're also last out of 30 teams in forced turnovers. The only stat that weighs everything is points per possession because it's literally how many points we're giving up on each possession. We're 16th out of 30.
If you also consider that we've had the 2nd easiest strength of schedule in the east, I don't think you can reasonably conclude that we're a top defensive team.

I know every game counts but how much does those blowouts skew the numbers of at all?

This is true, we haven't had a really good win since the thunder (no KD) on the road, and at this point, were just beating teams we should beat, and we lost a few of those.

No better time to start than tonight against the HAWKS

Which numbers? They likely skew everything - SOS, opp fg%, etc. If you want to just discard those games, we're 12-16 though.

It can be very complicated to assess the Knicks defensive ability. I would say that if the offense was more efficient that it would actually help the defense a LOT. Bad offense can lead to more fast breaks for the other team. Fewer Turnovers, missed shots would help. Melo has been better and overall the team can play some good defense in stretches of any game. The trend is all good IMO. They can get better as the individuals on the team get better and as we hopefully add more talent.

I think I saw an article of foxnews also that had Jose as a lockdown defender as well. Let me try to dig that up.
gunsnewing @ 12/26/2015 10:07 PM
Great defensive effort tonight. #1 league defense stuff right there

Well it is FOX news. If Obama can be Muslim because they said so, why can't Melo be a lockdown defender?

tj23 @ 12/26/2015 11:52 PM
Haha no
Stevo718 @ 12/27/2015 12:16 AM
Well if its on the internet then it must be true.
jrodmc @ 12/27/2015 2:33 PM
No, it's only true if it's on TMZ and has something to do with Melo's wife and midget clowns.

Think I saw one that said you had friends. Then I realized they were counting anyone that responded to your endless posts on the UK forum. Btw, I didn't say that, that was Melo.
