we are around 40% of the way through the season. i don't know what szerbiack is talking about when he says the knicks are solid on defense. the knicks are pretty bad defensively, and here is a list of
defensive real plus minus for the main players, notably:
1) afflalo's defensive real plus/minus is ranked 77th among shooting guards at -2.32. this is just awful, even unacceptable. he is hurting the team in this regard. combined with his selfishness with the ball, and it's like having a shorter version of the "old Melo" out there, and in a prime position in the triangle offense too. overall rpm he is ranked 34th. not starting material on a winner.
2) calderon is ranked 42nd among point guards at -1.53, 27th overall in rpm. a starter on a bottom feeder.
3) galloway is ranked 31st among shooting guards at -.56, 21st overall. he could be a starter on the knicks.
3) carmelo's is ranked 37th among small forwards, at -.16, which is, relatively speaking, a welcome surprise. overall his rpm is 7th, so this season he's a starter on a winner.
4) lance thomas's, ranked 68th among sfs, is a surprisingly bad -1.59, but at least it's better than afflalo. he's ranked 42nd overall this season.
5) derrick williams, ranked 80th among pfs is also negative at -.23, which is not as bad as some might think, but still below average. ranked 47th in rpm among power forwards.
the team may be in need of a shake up. if i were derek fisher, i would consider benching afflalo and calderon and inserting lance thomas at the shooting guard and galloway at the point guard.... in the triangle offense, this is entirely doable. lance is a better playmaker than afflalo and a better defender, and galloway the better defender.
second unit would be a lot stronger with afflalo, calderon, oquinn, williams, and the triangle would not have to be run as much.
How about benching Jose who has not given the Knicks anything since his arrival? Aflalo is THE best guard we have on the roster; while Nose is the worst one of the four guards

and afflalo is terrible
What about fisher???? Lol

Mreinman, do you honestly think that the system is the issue? Or is it the players the sideline (coach) chose to use in his rotation that are the problems??? In my opinion, I think anyone can do a better job in the back court then Nose

the system is AN issue and A big one. Many issues which fisher is only a small piece of it.

"nose" as in <no-zay>? i think <no-way> is a better "knickname"
i liked the afflalo signing but i was wrong about him. afflalo is not what you see him to be. the numbers on him are horrible. and it is clear from the eye test that he is a black hole/non-playmaking guard. you will have to justify what you see in him.

The dude has the highest percentage shooting the midrange shot in the league. With a better back court mate, this dude could be even better. Can he rebound and pass the ball more?? Yes he can, this is where the coaches need to step in and demand that he does so

highest pct midrange shot? where do you come up with these?
And, afflalo is this season exactly what he has always been. He is consistently mediocre.
The problem is phil and fisher tried to make the knicks a defensive team with AA and Rolo. ...with high IQ in Nose.....what they didn't have is a backup plan in case the defense is below average ands the offense is slow.
With the talent on this team. ......we would win more games playing speed or small ball....than slow defensive ball. With small ball......Nose and Rolo goes to the bench. AA woukd be the 1st one to sit. We have a bench full of players that have young legs ready for an uptempo style....vs....a triangle system built for a veteran methodical flow. LT is one of the few athletes that can bring energy on defense while producing in the triangle offense. This is why we almost beat the cavs. Take melo and koq out and fisher was forced to player his active guys more minutes.

Galloway stinks pretty bad.

he never passes the ball and it drives me up the friggin' wall

Galloway is a backup player....Because the talent level is below average, fans are calling for Galloway to start. Same with LT, who's my favorite knick right now.....But even LT wouldn't be a starter on a good team. That just shows you the level of talent we have is not very high. We have a ready made team for two more superstar or potential star players to be added. Adding more role models will only bring marginal improvements at this point.
I would only make one change - Galloway in for Calderon. Jose is just outmatched physically and is one of the main weaknesses on D. Cut down minutes of Lopez/Porzingis and run more lineups with Melo or Williams at 4.
Lopez/Porzigis/Lopez/Porzingis
Porzingis/Williams/Melo
Melo/Thomas
Afflalo/Vujacic/Afflalo
Galloway/Calderon/Galloway
I'd rather not play Sasha but he knows the system and has been the more consistent of the backup guards.
Some key minute changes as a result
C Lopez (28) Porzingis (20)
4 Porzingis (14) Williams (22) Melo (12)
3 Melo (24) Thomas (24)
2 Afflalo (34) Vujacic (14)
1 Galloway (30) Calderon (18)

Would be nice for the Knicks to set some form of precedent.
Let's bench Fisher in favor of Rambis for 1 week.
Wait, how about we let Calderon coach and start Fisher?
I would bench Jose and start Langston.
Galloway
Afflalo
Melo
KP
Rolo

I agree. No point in benching Afflalo. He improves with a better PG as does everyone else in the starting lineup. I think over the summer the Knicks need to solve the PG situation, and if they can do so for cheap, then you target someone like Batum to replace Afflalo and bring Afflalo off the bench. But can't do anything there until the PG situation is solved.
