Was definitely time for him to go. Probably was for a few years.
With many its always the coach to blame. Eli has had some very productive years and has not had another coach. sure the team is not very good and its showed on the field but the economics of a team, how it uses its draft, etc all play in BIG.
Tom made some blunders this year and perhaps those moves alone tells us its time. Im hoping he is going out on his terms and feels ok about it.
Be a good thing if someone can be promoted and maybe Tom can still advise in some capacity. Giant's have a good culture and Eli at age 35 might as well ask for a trade if team is rebuilding with a new coach to install a new system and assistants.
Two superbowls in his watch and some wonderful moments. I would imagine Canton will be calling him one day. He took Jax to within a win of a superbowl.
But any coach that beats New England twice in the Super Bowl (including the undefeated regular season) . . . is a prince among men in my book.
Seems like a good guy that is going out on his own terms (he's 69 years old) . . .
Dude did his best with the crappy players that he was given. I was hoping he was going to be able to AT LEAST finish out his contract (one more year if I'm not mistaken).
It doesn't matter who they bring in to replace him...until they fix that line, on both sides of the ball, next year will be the same as this one....probably worse.
The other is it was a miracle Coughlin even had them in these games with how pathetic their personnel was across the board in every aspect of the game.

Slate should've been wiped clean 3yrs ago after missing the playoffs. Tom should've stepped down then. We would've had a fresh start and a head start for Eli and the 2nd half of his career.
Now Eli is 35 and because he is too old for a 3rd system in 3yrs the Giants will make Ben Mcadoo head coach. He will be as awful a head coach as he was with his late game offensive play calling.
Next year after missing the playoffs again and another failed season Reece will be fired and the slate will finally be wiped clean. When was the last time Feece drafted or signed a probowl level defensive player?
With that said I am grateful for the entire Tom Coughlin era. Everything you want in a coach and a man. Total class act and warrior. His name is forever enshrined in Giants history and in the the fans eyes. Same way Joe Torre is. Would love to have Tom back someday working with the team as an advisor/scout like Parcells the last few years in Miami.

I do worry about ownership's ability to hire a coach. Coughlin kinda saved them from that. They kept Fassell a few years ago and let John Fox walk (wrong move).
McAdoo has been very good. Spags is still a good coach despite some bad #s and terrible time with the Rams. I have no clue if either have much in the way of leadership, but both are decent Xs and Os guys. I dont really have a feel for who is out there. I follow the Giants but not really the rest of the league. I just dont have the bandwidth.
Fortunately, we still have some talent on the team at WR and CB, we have a motivated JPP, a young O-line that started playing MUCH better late in the season, a RB who is starting to get into the swing of things (e.g., 170 yds in a meaningless final game).
If Reese can get his 3-4-5 round picks better to add depth on defense, we should be able to fill needed holes at safety, LB and Def line with the $50mil in cap space we'll have in the off-season.
Wish we could snag Sean Peyton as HC, but agree it will probably be McAdoo since Eli isn't going to want to learn a new system at 35, particularly when Ben's system works so well for Eli. If he had another quality receiver to work with, would have been a different outcome this season.
Payton is a Parcells guy. Coughlin might have been good enough to develop his own "Tree" of coach's and perhaps McAdoo or Spags are ready to step up.

Btw, coughlin probably would have been fired if he got knocked out of the first round of the 2011 season. They way under achieved that season and many seasons under him. They had miracle runs but were far from a dominant regular season team. They got hot at the right time.

After the way he crashed and burned in Philly, I wouldn't want him on my team unless he was only the offensive coordinator, if that. Too divisive a figure. Look at the stats for Kelly once they started figuring out his offense.
So if Payton is not head coach of the Giants next year it better be because he preferred the warmer weather in San Francisco. Personally I think the Giants is a better job. More stability than San Fran. As Harbaugh tweeted to San Fran. Do not be deceived, You reap what you sow. Giants have loyal owners. First class organization.
Not interested in Mcadoo. No head coaching experience, showed nothing with his late game decisions and play along. Unless you want to say Tom forget how to coach I don't think that's the case. A lot of that was Mcadoo's inexperience as a head play caller. He was an assistant in Green Bay. No coordinator experience Nevermind head coach. Not interested in Peyton Manning's old coordinator, Josh Mcdaniels, certainly not Chip Kelly or Saban.
I'd like Jim Harbaugh as well but I don't see him as the prototypical Giants Head Coach. Not a Mara guy. The one other guy I'd be open to if Sean goes elsewhere is Eric Mangini. I he knows how to build a team. He built the Jets and Rex Ryan reaped the benefits of that Mangini roster the first 2 yrs. Mangini deserves a 2nd chance in New York. He's learned to be more open and player and media friendly. Just like Coughlin changed and adapted

I would stay away from college colleges period. Especially the ones who run a system that only works in college and against future cpa's and accountants. Chip is the worst possible candidate. Doubt the Giants would go there. It would be a public relation disaster. How about the all the racist allegations from his own players and how Chip can't relate to NFL players. I would think Chip wants to return to college. Help put some low key Pacific Northwest school on the map with a gimicky offense.

Yea hiring Hiring MacDoo and keeping Coughlin was a huge mistake. They should've wiped the slate clean while Eli was still in his prime. Now he's gonna have no choice put to learn a 3rd system in 3yrs at 35. I may be wrong but I don't think Reece and the Mara's will award a coordinator who was part of 2 failed seasons. The fanbase will explode if they miss the playoffs again next year and Eli will be 36 and learning a 3rd system

nobody would turn down the giants job. That may be the best and most secure job in sports

macadoo's offense was not really the problem. The defense may have been the worst ever.
and reese gets blame for that o-line
The offense was not as good under Mcadoo as people make it out to be. They didn't settle on a #1 running back til after week 13 when the season was over. They kept trotting Andre Williams out there for negative yardage. They inexplicably were never able to incorporate an excellent pass catching RB in Vereen into the offense. He never got going probably because he was never given a consistent role and was forced to watch Andre Williams rack up negative yardage. The only good thing is Beckham obviously and I can call successful plays for Beckham. The other positive is very much a misconception as Eli drastically cut down on his TO's but our offense the worst I've seen in years despite what the numbers say. Remove Beckham ridiculous TD's and really look at how the offense performed. The Giants offense was a well oiled machine from 2007-2012. Averaging in the high 20s points per game. This year if the Giants hit 20pts it was a lot. Even the during the soft part of the schedule they struggle of to put up points against the leagues bottom feeders. MacDoo did not do enough to deserve the job imho
