I know some here will claim that Fisher has a lot to do with it, but when you have two legit 7 footers on the court in RoLo and KP, particularly a dude like KP who is long, agile and can keep up with perimeter players, add a defensively dedicated Melo to the mix, with Aflalo in the back court, your defense will improve immensely.
Perhaps we can be even better minus Calderon in the back court as our starting PG. I am not saying trade him, but to play him strictly as a backup SG:)

Yea, your right. A coach has no bearing on team defense. And Fisher is only responsible for any misses the players may have.

Lot of factors leading to our success on D.
We all knew that Lopez, now in his prime, would give his usual defensive effort, but I don't think any of us though KP would be as significant a factor on a regular basis. Saw some hints of what he could do in SL, but some of the lateral movement chasing blocks he's made...like the one on Wade, yesterday, have been ridiculous. I saw him do one on Mardy Collins in Euro-Ball...did not think he would be doing the same on a DWade.
Anthony has really stepped up his D, and don't think that other guys on the team don't notice this. I think that in some ways, he and Lopez have set a defensive tone.
AA is a solid defender who shows some pride on that end of the court.
Thomas has been an excellent all purpose troubleshooting defender.
Even Calderon, of all people, has shown some grit.
Gallo and Grant play D, and we've even seen Williams step it up at times, even though he has moments of losing his attention.
Saw some good help D, yesterday, too.
Biggest thing for me on defense is to have guys who buy in to what you're doing as a team, but more importantly, IMO, is to have guys with the kind of pride in this aspect of the game...guys who get visibly annoyed with themselves when they do something that lets an opponent score. Seems to me that we have a number of guys like this on this Knicks team

Big props to Phil Jackson for assembling this roster with the few resources he had . . .
If you really look at the details of how the Knicks defend it's more than just the talent. You still have to put it all together in a way that minimizes the weaknesses and enhances the team's strengths. TEAM defense is not a given even if you have tall players. We aren't the only team with tall players. Being able to hold team's 3pt shooting down is another example of a team that is executing a defensive scheme well. You ALWAYS need defensive talent but you still have to organize that talent into a cohesive unit.

No "we" didnt. Plenty of posters here have been trashing Lopez since the signing, right up to last week.

then there are the effects not captured in stats, e.g., KP closes out fairly quickly for a big man. It seems uncanny how many times a guy seems squared up for a good shot, KP closes out and the guy ends up with a bad shot (no block). I know the FG% can show up in a stat, but i don't know of a stat that takes into account that the guy missed on a quality attempt
now if Jose can stay in front of his guy more frequently, our defense will be that much better
