Knicks · Derrick Williams........... (page 1)

Williams is a superb athlete who can turn into a defensive monster. If this dude ever puts it together on defense, and if he can make a concerted effort to rebound the ball, watch out. He needs to be encouraged to play defense with the same passion he does when scoring or dunking the ball. Further, he also needs to be coached to crash the board whether we make or miss a shot. I notice when he is on the floor, once a shot goes up, he has the tendency to run back instead putting himself in position to rebound. KP and RoLo always chase the shots once the ball is in the air, but none of our guards.

That dude has the body and skills; he just needs to develop his cerebral part of the game. I am confident Phil will help him with that. Does anyone know whether Williams is a gym rat? Given the latest reported incident, it appears that this dude loves to party. He is a 24 year old millionaire after all; so I don't blame him. However, I wonder if he puts in the time necessary in the gym to become the talent that he can be. Does he study the game? Who does he patter his game after? etc......

No, that's by design.

It's part of the Knicks defensive scheme . . .

Are you sure? An athlete like that needs to be deployed to crash the boards. I think it is all about habits. THJ used to do the same exact things last season, and he is known to be a horrendous rebounder.

It's hard to really judge what the coaches are telling the players to do in terms of getting back on D. I do know it's clear that this team is trying it's best not to get beat in transition. That's another reason Phil liked the Triangle initially because of the balanced floor that leads to better defense. DWill came to us needing the MOST work on his fundamentals and BB IQ. He seems to be making progress so hopefully he continues to grow here for us.

I think so -- yeah.

It's also a major trend in NBA.

Here's a more-than-we-probably-want-to-know analysis of it: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/145050...

It could be some teams coach players to forget about offensive rebounding to get back on D. I believe the spurs and the Celtics(w/Rivers) were big proponents of this.

D.Williams I believe is around 6.6 rebs per 36 which is okay if you consider him a 3. Since he usually checks in for Melo you can list him there.

If he can keep this up with a slight increase of minutes that would be great. The problem however is that He can opt out this summer so, when he gets good he might leave.

I think DWIll is gonna stay. This is the most success he's had and if the team does fight into the playoffs I can see a scenario where he may resign here for longer much as other FA's we wanted stayed this summer with their teams because not just the money but the comfort level of a good situation.

His role of scorer off the bench is perfect. Nothing more to say. He's in his ideal role
WaltLongmire @ 1/7/2016 1:35 PM
Geez... Williams roles seems to suit him quite well at this point.

I still cringe when he has the ball in the backcourt and brings it up- I'm always yelling at the TV or computer for him to give it off to a guard- but he's been looking pretty good, recently.

Looks like the coaching staff is getting to him. I questioned his signing, but will be very happy to be proven wrong, and so far Williams is making my fears seem foolish.

It maybe hard if the Knicks want a Conley/Batum type. That will probably take up 18m+ of the nearly $27-29m of the Knicks cap if the NBA cap is at $89m.

The Knicks will have AA, LT, & LG on top of D. Will. They will have lance and Gallo's early-bird rights and they both have low cap holds so that's good but players will be offered major money.

I said nothing about Fisher, you should be happy:::)))

Lopez/Porzingis/Williams as a 3 man rotation has been fantastic. Williams to his credit has improved his D. In the Tri, and in this role, he's given freedom to do what he likes, handle the ball, make his plays. In another offense or more traditional offense coaches want their 4's to be able to shoot 3's, screen set and roll, do stuff like that. Williams is more of an on ball player with some ability to do things off the ball. The way he's able to spin and dunk or cut and flush it in the Triangle really helps him. Again, I give Phil a ton of credit. He truly knows how to scout basketball talent. He saw a guy in Williams who had plenty of talent but not a role that fit him. He knew he would fit in what they wanted from him in NY. The coaches asked him to improve his D to get more minutes, which he has. He's making 4 million a year, and doing a very good job. I can't ask for more for what he's being paid. Talent wise, yes there's still a ways he could go if he decided to. Seems he's happy being this sort of player, but without question the guy has talent to be a star in the league if he focused on a few things and brought that mindset every night. There's a legit reason he was drafted so high. Has so much talent. All he needs is the mindset to bring it every night and to work on making his jumpshot more consistent.
