Knicks · Why _wouldn't_ Melo want to go to the Cavs? (page 1)

stanleybostitch @ 2/16/2016 4:30 PM
If the Lowe-to-Boston deal is not getting done b/c the Cavs want a "star" in return, why _wouldn't_ Melo want to go win a chip with Lebron? I don't get him. He's been great this year, finally a team player, but we need to move him at the peak of his value, and it won't get any better than the multiple assets Boston can offer. I'm going out on a limb here and predicting that a CLE-NYK-BOS deal involving Melo gets done before the deadline, b/c it makes TOO MUCH SENSE for all parties involved. Who's with me here!
crzymdups @ 2/16/2016 4:32 PM
Because it's Cleveland, which is a terrible place to live.

Also, if Melo helped Lebron win a ring for the Cavs, the narrative would be Lebron bringing a ring back to Cleveland.

I think LA Clippers and CP3 is the only place Melo goes. And not til this summer at earliest.

callmened @ 2/16/2016 4:33 PM
it seems like melo's priorities are: family, money and business and then basketball legacy. i cant knock him for that - everyone is different. but hopefully that answers your question

It doesn't get done this season because Melo won't waive his NTC this season, he already said that. But if the Knicks continue to slide and don't make the playoffs and are unable to land a big name free agent this summer, i think it is at that point that Melo may reconsider. Cleveland is the natural option. Melo will have better chemistry with LeBron than Love does, and they will have a legit chance to compete for a title over the next 3-4 years. Melo might not want to pass that up to play with LeBron. I also think that if that were to happen, Phil might just prefer to take Love and not even deal with Boston. Melo for Love straight up is very realistic IF Melo waives his NTC after this season, and that's still a Big If. Love is younger and if they want to move KP to the 5, it makes sense. But it's still slim to none that it happens.

that's a fair assessment. But it also sounds like Melo is going to think long and hard about it this summer.

i agree. if melo gets moved...itll be this off season:
1. chance to move his kid to a school starting sept
2. trade kicker in which he gets up to $10 mill for being traded
3. the chance to make sure his nyc businesses are ok before leaving

10. oh yeah the chance to win a ring with lebron

Agree

he'd be playing second fiddle to James vs. one of the leading players in LA - a good PG makes everyone else look good, and kinda is in the background.

If I see that "win one for the land" commercial with Lebron again, I might give up basketball.

*Bron calls Melo*

"Melo, you ready to come out here and win one for the 'Land?"

*silence*

"Melo, you there, man? Melo? Hello?"

we can make fun of cleveland all we want but they have been closer to the finals a hell of a lot more than we have the last decade

I was more making fun that commercial. But, until they win a ring, I think you can make fun of them.

They've also gotten a ton of crazy luck in the draft. 4 #1 overall picks from 2003 to 2014.

until we have a decent playoff run we probably shouldnt laugh at anyone. The past 15 years have not been pretty. KP is the one silver lining

Yea they make the worst trades and free agency signings. If not for their luck with the draft Lebron might've never returned unless he was content with just ending his career in his hometown where it all began and carrying the team

It's funny that people trash Melo if that's what he wants to do here. What if Melo just wants to be a mentor to KP, help the team try to improve and go out a Knick? It's not like he's hurting the team on the floor. They're 0-7 when he doesn't play and 23-25 when he does play - the latter number is about where most of us hoped we'd be this year, close to a .500 team.

nobody is trashing melo really. A trade probably makes more sense for both sides. I think his family is a major reason why he wants to stay which i understand

yeah, I can see the case for trading him, which I couldn't see before.

but I can also see a case for him staying and turning into a leader and mentor for KP and other young guys. it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I think most posters here understand both sides on the Melo thing... I feel like I've seen some bitterness towards him, but maybe that's a straw man.

Basically my outlook is like Phil's at this point - if Melo stays, man are we fortunate, if Melo goes, man are we fortunate. etc.

melo is what he is. IMO he is never gonna be that elite guy who can lead of big playoff push especially at this point in his career. He actually would benefit from being a complimentary player to lebron/irving
HofstraBBall @ 2/16/2016 7:02 PM
I think Phil gets it. This league needs at least three proven stars to win a tittle. We have one and hopefully two in KP. Need a third and solid role players that will come to play with a solid foundation. I personally don't put a lot of stock in starting over with young picks. Didn't work for Minnesota, Philly, Charlotte, NO, etc. Worked for the Celts but only because they lucked out on adding Thomas who is having great year. And does not mean they will go deep in the playoffs. Think he passes on any deals that do not bring a proven star back for Melo. I for one admire Melo for wanting to win in NY and was willing to change his game and endure the losing just to win in NY. In a time where everyone quits at the first sign of problems, it is good to see.
WOODMANnYk @ 2/17/2016 8:25 AM
Melos clock ticking if he wants to win a championship.. Knicks team needs lots of work to be considered a title contender.

By the time it happens, Melo won't be the melo... It will too late and he'll be like 35 yrs old or older.. You have to get rid of melo soon and convince him to waive his no trade clause, get younger and make this porzingis team who is only 20 yrs old..
