We are in a bit of the drivers seat imo. The Cavs I don't think can win it all without Melo. If they can spice up the offer to Boston, maybe we can make a deal.
If not, no worry, we have some money to spend on a nice FA, if we can find one.

At this point, it is what it is. You do the Melo deal beacuse hopefully you draft another potential star in Porzingis and then hopefully the situation attracts top free agents. If it works, you get a contender right away.
If it doesn't you don't go out of your way to make it look like you're helping Melo win a chip by overpaying 2nd-tier free agents.

If we trade him we add another high pick, another bad year next year another top 5 pick coming. Now we have a core of 3 young players on cheap deals to build around. Now we a legit core around the same age to build around. Without a pick this year the Knicks can't rebuild the roster properly. We will waste another season next year to get another high pick to add to this group. By then Melo is probably broken down and finished. Nw we are stuck with an Albatross and we waste porzingis

Knicks are 0-7 this year without Melo and 23-25 with him. You could argue Melo is helping Porzingis quite a bit by showing him how to win games and play unselfishly and compete. KP and he seem to love playing together.
There are plenty of ways for the Knicks to improve that don't involve trading Melo.

This is a different take then Melo doesn't want to win. Melo at this point is mentoring Porzingis. If Melo waives his no trade clause he would be going to a contender so the draft pick that the Knicks get back would not be a high pick. (I don't think anyone is getting the Nets pick from Danny Ainge). The Knicks have cap space but the chance of adding a good free agent if you go all in on a rebuild are not good. The Knicks also have Hernangomez who's contract is up with RealMadrid and might come over as part of the young core. You have to be really careful not to become the Sixers or some of the other teams that are forever resetting. If a deal happens great. If it doesn't great. The Knicks have a lot of problems but Melo isn't one of them.

When you do, it changes the entire dynamic of building your team through the draft and turns the process into a more favorable venture, like it has for the Spurs (Duncan and then Parker and Ginobili), Warriors (Steph and then Klay and Draymond) and Thunder (Durant and then Westbrook, Harden and Ibaka).
Suggesting that the Pelicans did the same with Davis is wholly inaccurate on your part. After they drafted Davis, those dopes immediately tried to build a win-now team with veterans. Had they been patient, like I am a proponent of us being, they'd be so much further along the process with one of the most dynamic frontcourt pairings in Davis and Noel.

I feel the same way about the Clippers especially with Blake likely missing the rest of the regular season as he recovers from his injury. I also think that it is a far more favorable destination for Melo because of the market that LA provides and the fact that he seems to be closer to CP3 than LeBron. I never hear about Melo doing stuff with LeBron but constantly hear reports about him being out with CP3 when given the opportunity. And wasn't CP3 Melo's best man?

We need to build a core of at least three players with future star potential that can grow together. Melo playing well now makes his value higher. Trade him and cash in in the offseason, but we need to get a first round pick or some how get players like Winslow. Blake is already a star but still young enough. We should also look to keep players like Rolo around, every good team needs a defensive big. KP will get enough mentoring, I am truly not interested in mortgaging first round picks for Gasol etc. It's a feel good story that has a fairly weak cost benefit trade-off.
