Not a bad article and I think he is outlining what Phil is trying to do. I wish he would have addressed the coaching situation because I believe that in addition to having major issues in the back court etc., the knicks have a major issue with their coach and the pool that Jackson might be considering hiring from.

Calderon, Affalo, Williams would all come off the books the offseason after next. If they don't op out this season or Calderon doesn't get stretched depending on the options presented to us. Even if we used 20 mil in cap space this season. We possibly will have close to another 20 mil in cap the following offseason.
All the Knicks need to do is make solid FA signings, keep there draft picks. The contract yrs for the most part should be aligned to maintain that flexibility. Constantly freeing up cap space, like Spurs and Mavs has been so great at over the yrs. Any trade made should be based off being a no brainier for us.
great minds think alike! this is what ive been preaching. in fact i say wait even FURTHER until 2018 if theyre unable to get a good free agent in 2017. basically the next few years should be about young players auditioning to be core players built around KP. The reason why i say wait until 2018 is because THAT is when the cap will level off. for the next two summers, the cap will increase so EVERYONE and their MAMA will have cap space. i know we love nyc and the knicks but we cant compete with several teams to get free agents. However if we save our money, or spend it on short term contracts then wait until 2018 (unless a big time free agent wants to come in 2017)
That article aligns with my thinking as well. Honestly, it has to be that way. It's a pretty normal arc of building a team in the NBA. I just pray Phil has the intestinal fortitude to stick with a long term vision, because the NY media will roast him regularly throughout the process. Writers like Lupica will continue to throw every ounce of their stupidity into their anti-Phil articles. If Conley becomes a Knick, it'll be a very dark day in the history of this franchise. That would be a sign that the patience to stay the course has gone out the window.
I totally agree - we have to pick a point in the future, and build towards that.
They certainly only offered 2 year deals to some players, so that might give evidence that this is what Phil is thinking as well.

He's looking out for the long haul of the franchise and it's evident with how he's utilize the capspace, how he's drafted Porzingis and Grant, and how he's not trading away future draft picks just to get better in the short term.

I agree about Phil, but I always worry about our idiot owner Dolan being manipulated by the "win now now now" media and fan base. I'd like to think that Dolan has learned his lesson by now, but who knows?
Good article, and basically states the case many of us have made for trading Melo now and/or not blowing our wad next season, but aligning it with 2017 when we'll have both our pick and max cap space. This summer's draft class is not flush, so I'm not too dismayed about the Raptors having our pick. 2017 is another story, and having one more "see where we are" year in which we do a bunch of losing may actually set us up for finally turning the corner in 2017 with addition of CP3 or RW, lottery talent, Melo (maybe) as a #2/3 scorer, and KP reaching his prime.
Trying to replace frustration/impatience with some modicum of hope/optimism.

It is obvious but I do not agree that trading Melo is paramount or even important.
He is a great player and can help the team to get through rebuilding years financially and perception vise.
It sucks for Melo so he can decide to go win some games and play in off seasons somewhere else.
But this is entirely up to him and for him.

Yeah this makes the most sense to wait, unless of course we are able to land one of the biggest of names. But we shouldn't do what we did last summer and settle for role players in free agency. It made sense at the time, we needed to rebound from last season plus having no draft pick, but we are in a different place now. We have our pick in 2017 and have a young franchise player to build with, so we can afford to make sure the next move is a home-run, and in the meantime make sound decisions for the future and hope that we land a quality player in the next draft as well.
I really hope Phil doesn't rush based on idiots like Craig Carton whining on the radio everyday. Signing Conley doesn't make the Knicks legit contenders. Knicks need to be bad next season. Another top 5 pick, maybe Melo wants out and you get some more picks. I don't buy the narrative that point guards wouldn't play here. Maybe a traditional guard like Conley but for a scoring guard like Westbrook he could shoot 25 times a game like Kobe did. Get another combo guard with some size to guard 2's to pair with Westbrook
