Knicks · Think of Wroten as our 1st round pick this year... (page 1)

SocraticBallin22 @ 3/12/2016 10:04 AM
In his interview yesterday, Phil was asked specifically about Wroten and said that he wants him to continue rehabbing his knee the rest of the year and expects to get a real good look at him in the Summer League. When asked about the signing, he said it's no secret that they need a penetrating point guard to attack defenses, which Wroten brings. He also said that Calderon is in the twilight of his career.

Keep in mind that Wroten is only 22 years old, and if he fully recovers from his injury, is like getting a 1st round pick this year when we have none. That's why this signing is so important. If he's healthy and improves his game, Phil also hinted that he could possibly even be the starter and the Knicks don't necessarily need to chase an elite point guard because of the system we run. Make no mistake about it that Wroten has 1st round talent. If it works out, this could become a brilliant signing in a year we have no draft pick. Add our 2nd round big from Spain last year coming over this year who is projected as a 1st round talent if he came out in the draft this year, and that's potentially adding 2 1st rounders to our club next year,so things are not as bleak as they seem.

I'm sorry, but i don't think someone we pick up as a mid-season free agent can be viewed as a 1st round pick. We are taking a flyer on him. If anything, Hermangomez is our draft pick this season if he comes over. But i bet we buy a pick too.

True, but I get his point though -- that's kind of how I'm looking at it. With Willy H., Wroten and hopefully a 2nd round pick we can acquire and turn into a rotation player (Yogi Ferrell?), it sure doesn't make you forget we have no picks, but it makes it a little easier to swallow.

Interesting that Phil referenced his medical needs and referred to him as being similar to Ricky Ledo in that they want to give him a shot. I think the organization is looking at Wroten like a minimal investment that could turn out very well.

Yeah but it just feels better or will feel better knowing we have two guys coming in next year that both would be 1st round picks if they were in this draft so just don't look at it in a negative way is all.

If Anthony Bennent was picked up should he also be considered thought of like a 1st rd pick?
nyk4ever @ 3/12/2016 11:41 AM
if wroten is our first round pick, it was a terrible pick

How do you know? You really have no idea what he's going to do when he is put in our system and given a role. He might just take to it like Shved did. MANY on this forum laughed at me when I was saying Shved was a good pick up. He fit the kind of role this offense needs. There's a good chance that Wroten could find success in this system. He's got flaws to his game but also he's got some very important strengths. They've gotta coach him up and get him on a program to improve his skills.

Besides it literally costs us next to nothing to take a look! This is a smart thing to do. It's not Phil's fault that we don't have this pick. He's at least looking for other ways to supplement our need for young Prospects.

Great to see that you've a;ready made your judgment on the kid before he ever even steps foot on the floor with us. Always love seeing such optimism around here. GEESH

With Porzingis (21) Grant (24) Wroten (23) Galloway (24) Williams (25) and Lopez (28) it could turn out 6 of our top 9 guys next year are pretty young and also athletic. Knicks may actually be able to push the pace. Need someone supremely athletic at 2/3 instead of Lance/Afflalo though.
anrst @ 3/12/2016 6:35 PM
why did the sixers let go of wroten? that's one thing that makes no sense.

Buy low, sell high. Seems like he's worth a flyer. Could be an unpolished gem that needs time to heal and buff out the kinks.

nobody knows how anyone will turn out. So far, it ain't pretty. Would you pick him in the first round this year with what we already know/have seen?

The average NBA age is 26 you know? You're listing guys around or even older than that age. And the statistical peak in production is around 25.

Higher that pick is, the harder it's going to be to think of things that way.
mreinman @ 3/12/2016 9:00 PM
how long ago was it that we were talking about Ricky Ledee being that first round pick that we didn't have?

29 other teams flat out pass on him, they weren't too optimistic either

Let's temper expectations. The guy was cut by the worst team in the league.
The Worst. Team. In. The. League. couldn't use this guy's services.
GustavBahler @ 3/12/2016 10:13 PM
Wroten seems as far as what he brings to the table, a half a step up from what we have now collectively at PG. He can get to the rim which is an urgent need. Seems to be recuperating. I dont mind the PG position getting incrementally better, as long as the cap hit isn't out of proportion with the production.
Bonn1997 @ 3/12/2016 10:18 PM
How many teams would trade a 1st round pick for him right now? If he's worth a first round pick, we should be able to get a few 2nd rounders for him, right? Except I doubt we'd get anything for him now.
