but how about K Leonard? He is a great player in his own right. I have no idea how this became a Spurs vs. GS style argument. They are both phenomenal teams with styles that work for them.
Just adding to my previous comments about the best way to defend Curry by not giving him the room to operate that most teams do. My intitial comments werent about the Spurs, just so happened they played Curry closer to the way I would have.
Leonard is the best defender in the league and they had 3 guys running at him all night. Won't always work but its worth a try
Leonard (or any other player in this league) isnt considered the best shooter in NBA history. Curry just needs a little daylight to get a shot off from almost anywhere, so you give him as little as possible. Not sure why this is so controversial.
not controversial. He can just beat you anyway you play him. If you overplay him, he will shred the defense. You think teams have not tried anything?
Look at how close they played him the entire game, when they switched, the next defender stayed glued to Curry, even without the ball. Its not just making it harder to get a good look, but its also getting him out of his comfort zone. Lots of teams, even some of the top defensive teams, don't do consistently what the Spurs did last game.
well it also helps that they have the best defensive guard in the league and the smartest coach in the league.
Also, many shots curry just missed ... this is what happened in the beginning of the cleveland series. And, a depleted GS front line did not help curry burn the constant triple teams.
This is why I would want to see how the teams adjust in a seven game series.
I will take one above average defender playing Curry as close as possible, forcing him to put the ball on the floor, than 2-3 guys standing too far to make a difference.
If I have a choice between maybe the best shooter ever shooting at will, or forcing him to put the ball on the floor and run into help D, I'll take the latter. Watch how much space many teams give Curry to shoot, do whatever he wants. Makes no sense.
so you have the key to stopping him? Or to slow him down? If they would only listen to you? Thanks for playing briggs
Had to go there lol. My prescription to slow Curry down wasnt too far off from what the Spurs did. Not talking about fancy diagrams, you just dont give Curry the room to operate that most teams do by default. Not an indictment of your precious advance stats, which is what this is all about isnt it. Isnt it!!! heh heh.

no ... nothing at all to do with advanced stats. SA is just as advanced in analytics as GS and perhaps even more advanced. And Leonard is up there right under curry (crazy!).
best defender vs. best offender. Curry played badly but it was one game. Lebron played curry well too in the first 2 games of the finals and then BOOOOOOOOOOM!

J/K. I know its one game and most days Curry will get his, but there is nothing that can shake me from believing that you have to make Curry work harder to get his looks. When I see a defender standing a good 5-6 feet from Curry, thats the problem right there.

I hear you but its so much more complicated than that. The picks and going over them at 30 feet is a nightmare. Really no way to defend him. He needs to just be off or they need to triple team him and hope everyone else is off.

Too many great shooters left open on a triple team. You have to get inside Curry's head and take away his space IMO. Having someone right up in his grill the entire game does more to throw him off than anything else Ive seen. No easy task.
this is what makes the NBA great. To see the 2 best teams play each other. To see how each side plays their chess position. This maybe the most anticipated series in 20+ years.
While I think that Curry is the best player, I think that SA has the better coach and team.

You know Basketball-Reference's Simple Rating System and Expected W-L both put SAS ahead of GSW? GSW has just had more lucky close wins. It's probably very close in terms of which team is better. Even if SAS is slightly better, if GSW has the home court advantaged, I think they'd be favored.

absolutely! I think that its going to be a series of a lifetime (at least I hope).
SA is so deep and so smart and guess what ... probably the smartest and most heavily invested in analytics ![]()

they won the MIT SLOAN award last year for best analytics team. And, they are considered one of the 4 top teams all in (phi, hou, SA, dal).

Or you could put a forearm in his chest a couple of times and see if he has the stones to get up and still hit those shots, which is actually what this thread was about to begin with. Is he a great shooter....no doubt, but because of the wussification of the league, he is allowed to play in open space with a freedom that is unparalleled in the history of the NBA. Great player but he is definitely benefitting from more than a little of the "right place at the right time" syndrome. Could you imagine Reggie Miller if he didn't have to earn his space running his skinny ass through all those goon fouls??? Or Jordan if you literally weren't allowed to touch him??? I will say this for the Warriors they are clearly the best NBA 2K team of all time and I think that's why all the children raised on playing B-Ball with their thumbs and not actually in the playgrounds swing on their nuts so hard.

Doesn't have to be a choice between the two, double teams included. Mentioned a few pages back of running Curry repeatedly into hard picks, which would achieve the same result and a little easier to get away with.
All these approaches have merit. Ive seen Curry get knocked back hard and hit a 3pter with his eyes closed, but he had already enough space to get the shot off before getting hit. Curry looks very comfortable out there because its almost like he has a space roped off for him at times.
He's the very last person in the league who should be given an inch of space to operate.
