Knicks · Possible sleeper coaching candidate? David Blatt (page 1)

crzymdups @ 3/28/2016 12:02 AM
Princeton teammates with Steve Mills - they were the starting backcourt there. Princeton offense has similarities to the Triangle.

David Duchovny actually mentions on the Bill Simmons podcast - he was a backup guard on the same team with Blatt and Mills.

Interesting interview at times - they talk about Shandling, Knicks, etc

I think Blatt got a RAW DEAL from Bron. Cavs were 33-11 when Blatt got fired. Cavs are 19-10 after firing Blatt. And also we're hearing rumors the team is a messs since the firing.

Blatt got the Cavs to the Finals in his first season and could've been up 3-0 on the Warriors in the Finals if they got a few bounces to go their way - they were up 2-1 anyway before Kerr figured out to use Iggy and David Lee off the bench more prominently.

I think Blatt is definitely worth a look and fits a lot of the Garden's weird rubrics for a candidate. International experience may help with KP and Hernangomez, too.

If I remember correctly, Kerr and Blatt had a verbal agreement, and Blatt was going to be an assistant coach on GS- possibly their offensive guru (not too sure on this, though). Blatt got the Cavs job, and Kerr was supposedly OK about it and happy for him.

Blatt would be an interesting choice. Pair him up with a good defensive minded assistant coach and it might work.

Don't know that Phil thinks of him, but if Jackson is actually going to conduct a search for a coach, and not just hand it to his friend, Rambis, you would think that Blatt would be worthy of consideration.

I think Blatt for offense and head coach and Rambis running the D could work.

We'll see.

I hope Phil thinks a little outside the triangular box on this one. Blatt could represent a tremendous opportunity to use the tenets of the Triangle but also update it a little.

Also, Blatt has a career NBA regular season record of 83-40 for a winning percentage of .675. That's a fantastic percentage. And he did it in a crazy environment with Bron's return to Cleveland with teams there that were poorly constructed and had a lot of weird drama - aka exactly what he would have in New York.

I think he'd be a good candidate.

Almost forgot about Blatt, would love to see him with the Knicks.

Blatt should be on the list as well. He no doubt learned a lot from his time in Cleveland and not just on the court aspects of things. The NBA is a different animal from any other league and i'm sure Blatt realizes this much better now. Just wonder what Phil's thinking will be this summer. Is he ready to end this path he's been on and hand over the reins to someone new or is he gonna give it one more shot with his guys?
callmened @ 3/28/2016 1:57 AM
Yes coach Blatt is a legit candidate. Good friends with mills
mreinman @ 3/28/2016 6:43 AM
I would rather get Lebron with the brothers.
anrst @ 3/28/2016 9:01 AM
this has been talked about for awhile as a possibility http://nypost.com/2015/06/02/the-longtime-friendship-that-couldve-landed-blatt-with-knicks/

Its not that phil and Rambis are "friends", but there is mutual trust and a long history. Not a damn thing wrong there. Rambis if not for the awful decision to take on the T-Wolves job would be better thought of around here. He is not a fancy name.

I would not have a problem with him being coach.

I do like Blatt. Forget the Princeton offense he played in. My concern is what system would he run and how would he run it here. I do think he is qualified. Are Him and Mills still tight? Do they trust each other?

I do like Thibs as well.

This is all about who Phil is comfortable working with and who will take his council. For all phil might not be as an exec, he is the "Lord of the Rings" and any candidate should take his mentorship and embrace it. If Fish didn't, he was a moron for doing so.

The best coach's take bits and pieces from the great ones.

IM good with either of these guys. Upgrade the talent is a big priority.

Interesting. I missed all this back then.

I think he's a very intriguing option as coach. We'll see what Phil does. I hope he at least reaches out to talk to him.

newyorker4ever @ 3/28/2016 10:38 AM
Blatt has been talked about for us before because of his connection with S.Mills. He got a raw deal with the Cavs and Lebron had a lot to do with that but we can't go on the fact that he had a good record while he was there because any team that has Lebron on it will always be a great team just ask M.Brown. I do think he should be looked at in the off season and i think he will probably at least get an interview with Phil and Mills and Mills will probably drive him there. So i'll add him to my list.
Thibs
Scotty Brooks
Luke Walton
K.Rambis
D.Blatt.

Amongst other things, I think this was the underlying for the firing.

Think Phil is going to consider 3 people mainly. Rambis, Shaw and Luke Walton. Luke is the one that would likely make everyone who hates the Triangle the happiest. He's a very relaxed laid back yet smart XnO coach. He'd use both the Triangle and the sets he has seen in Golden State be successful. However I think Luke will be in high demand. Lakers will definitely be after him, and I think I read somewhere Pheonix has a high interest in him. There's going to be a nice list he will be able to choose from.

Now that Bill Walton is back up amongst the living I'd prefer we keep Luke on the west coast so we don't have to listen to Bill and his overuse of the English language.
The man was an intolerable broadcaster.
I respect Bill the HOF player for what he did on the court (the man was a incredible college player!!!). I prefer to leave it at that.
Lets not confuse young Luke as the architect for the Warriors great start this season. Does he have potential as a head coach? Yeah, even before this season, but most of us want what already happened, and that is not going to happen again with a different roster.

I always enjoyed Bill's broadcasts and his verbal battles with his partner. I can't remember the other guys name but it was always fun listening to them.

I know Blatt has the chops, but after the way LeBron treated him, like one of his flunkies, who knows if that will carry to the next team? Blatt would be better served doing some time as an asst, start building relationships with some of the better players in this league. Build a better rep.

Steve "Snapper" Jones. The NBA on NBC and their theme song is forever burned into my brain.

+1

still remember the joke about the mute button being invented for Bill Walton. If he goes anywhere, Im positive that Luke will go to the Lakers.
