A pg is not going to rack up assist in this system, especially if the goal is to have 5 guys touch the ball every time down court. We don't spread the floor much, we don't run fast breaks, and we hardly ever Do the PnR. to me its ridiculous to think that a PG won't rack up assists if he's a true PG...in ANY system.
kobe bryant had an average of 5.6 assists per game as late as last year...and under phil....? as high as 6.
its not the system...it's the player.

are you watching the games Grant is actually playing in or just some footage of the bad highlights he had at the beginning half of season? Cause it seems like a lot of folks are seeing some obvious stuff you are missing.
For me, you just described Gallo when he has tried to play the point.
I watched the last couple of games. His drives to the basket are good as I stated though a bit scary. His use of picks is as bad as it gets. His passing and IQ seems under average for a top PG out of school especially one who can't shoot.
Definitely not a high IQ player. I agree. He does have great drives and can drive at will. I don't think anyone should hold Grant to a star point guard standards. We're talking a good role player who we'd want to defend and do a couple things on offense. If he can give us 10 points a night, 3 assists and some defense, it would really help. Not every pick you make can wind up like Porzingis. What I like about Grant is there's improvement in his shot. He works hard. He should in theory become a valuable defender if he learns the angles and defensive stance. He can play either 1 or 2 with his size. I think he's going to have Gallo's current spot in the rotation from this season (1st guard off the bench) next year.

I've seen Grant kick the ball outside off drives on a number of occasions...many more times that Gallo, for example.
Maybe he starts getting those calls at some point, too. Think of all the fouls a player like Harden would be getting in the same situations.
Refs have let Grant, and KP for that matter, take a lot of hits which should have been called this year.

Kid didn't get an opportunity to learn is the point. How can you learn on the job, if you don't get an opportunity to learn from your mistakes? We weren't going to the playoffs, so why play Jose all those useless minutes?
Kid's getting a crack at it in the last weeks of April. Tells you volumes about this shyt leadership we have.

You can say he wasn't ready earlier, but very few players can play knowing that they get pulled when they make a mistake.
He should have been allowed to play through his mistakes more. Really telling on the coach that Melo had to gather the players to make a request to let the kid play more, and then Jose going down.
I think we would have had a much better team had Rambis just let the guys play (and I mean within the triangle). He just seemed to play the vets too much, as if we were playing for something.

I think for many of us that believed in Grant's talent, we knew this was always possible. He was just struggling and once you lose your confidence at the NBA level it's tough. The coach starts to doubt you and then you doubt yourself. In any event i'm glad we got to see Grant putting things together at the end. It will be great for him going into the Summer knowing he can play at this level and he can focus on improving his game and his body this summer.

I think I agree with this. His big issue earlier in the season was total lack of confidence. He has that back. He can work on his shot and some other stuff over the summer - maybe an in-between shot, a runner, a floater, something like that.
I have high hopes for him next season. I think he's a smart player.
