Knicks · Who was the last big/medium Free Agent that signed with the knicks against competition? (page 1)

when was the last time a player chose us over another team? I can't remember any in recent years.
CrushAlot @ 4/17/2016 7:09 PM
I know the Bucks and Lakers were interested in Rolo. I think Afflalo coming to NY was a done deal. Not sure if he would have had suitors. I didn't follow O'Quinn's free agency and I know Seraphin was reported to have other offers.

koq and seph suck (I am not counting Eisly/Shandy's) and I did not hear about rolo's other offers.

Kidd said the Bucks were looking at Rolo, and Monroe back when the Bucks came to NY I believe. Lakers stuff was something I read somewhere, Wojo or Hoopshype is what I read for most free agency rumors. If you exclude the other guys Rolo would be the guy. Prior to that it would be Tyson and then Amare. Maybe you include JR signing with NY as well. The 54 win team had some guys choose the Knicks including Kidd.

Amare had no bidders.

Tyson had no other offer on the table (there was a GS rumor but no one else)

JR?

Amare could have stayed in Phoenix. Golden State wasn't just a rumor Jax wanted Tyson. JR was signed after the lock out. I would have to google it to see if there were any suitors because I don't remember. He did choose the Knicks.

amare was offered 3 years x 60. That is exactly what I am saying. If we pay like insane people then maybe they will come.

Wasn't Chicago also interested in Amare? In regards to the contract, I am not a big fan of Walsh's tenure.

(after charlotte loses to miami in 5 or 6)

N. Batum: I'm so mad we lost i JUST want to win in the PRIME of my career

Sports agent: Well we can find you a team that can compete. Plus we're gonna get you a LARGE contract in this summer

N.B: I was surprised that I actually liked Charlotte. We had a great team that shocked many people

S.Ag: I know of a team and market that suits your needs

N.B. Word? who?

S. Ag: they run the triangle, so i know other free agents cant wait to sign! they already have a forward but even though youre 6-8 we can shift you to guard. Oh and about that star forward - Melo - he might stay or might leave...im not even sure HE knows. They have no coach but most likely it will be K. Rambis. NO NO NO dont worry about his overall record. And I know Charlotte has $50 mill in cap space but dont worry they have $30 mill in cap space. Theyre also rebuilding now but Melo hopes to be a contender soon! Lastly, dont listen to what Jeremy Lin tells you. Knicks are run by a cool guy and NYC wont put any pressure on you.

Batum: (hangs up the phone and fires agent)

lol

He's not saying that no one else was interested in these players. He's saying we've always severely outbid the other teams that were interested.
newyorknewyork @ 4/18/2016 7:04 AM
Jr Smith took less to reup with the Knicks as he had a 8mil per offer from the Bucks. Don't know if he counts as that level of player though.

Knicks havent really and cap space or flexibitliy over the yrs so there isn't a lot to go off of.

smackeddog @ 4/18/2016 2:29 PM
A better question is how many offseason in the past 20 have we actually had any cap space to sign a FA? That's kind of the key- I think in 1996 or 97 (the year we signed Houston against competition), the year we signed Amar'e and last season. That's three offseasons in 20. In Knicks fans minds they probably think they've been snubbed every year for the last 20. We did some maneuverings to sign Tyson too, but we signed him against competition.

The Knicks aren't the centre of the universe- some players will want to come here, a lot won't, not sure why fans seem to take it personally or feel it's the fault of the GM for not making them come here. Our failings in the past have been not putting ourselves in position to actually have a chance at meaningful FAs by not having any cap space.

shandy and eisley?

Amare had zero competition and Tyson had just one team rumored to be interested. Dallas did not even compete.

Dallas wanted to re-sign Tyson and so did Golden state. That's competition. we signed Allan Houston (Detroit wanted to re-sign him). We signed Rolo and Afflolo against competition. So in answer to your question, in the past 20years, we had cap space 4 times and signed free agents against competition in 3 of those (excluding Amare).

dallas did not compete.

Houston was a good signing - don't remember if and who was the comp.

Rolo was a good signing but I did not here that there was another offer. You have a link?

AA was a terrible signing and I don't count trash signings like him and JR. Who wanted AA?

crzymdups @ 4/18/2016 4:31 PM
The idea that there was no competition for Tyson Chandler is so completely bogus.

Well said. Great point about the lack of cap space. It should have been brought up sooner.

Who cares really?? In 2/3 years we'll be back to being a team that free agents want to come play for. We'll have KP who by that time will be a all star and we'll have other good young players that other players will want to come play with and we still play in the greatest city in the world in New York City and every player loves playing in the Garden. Have patience. The Knicks will be back.

mainly Golden State who was a bloody mess at the time.

anyway ... I will give in on this one. Though getting him at the cost of amnestying billups which was a horrendous move.
