Free agency is still more than two months away, so it’s very early to discuss the Knicks’ potential targets with any certainty.

But we know that the club will be looking to upgrade the backcourt this summer.

New York projects to have at least $18 million in cap space to use in free agency. That number could climb to around $30 million if Arron Afflalo and Derrick Williams decline the player options on their contracts (worth $8 million and $4.6 million respectively).

But either way, Phil Jackson and the Knicks will have enough money to add talent in the backcourt.

Some available targets include Mike Conley, Rajon Rondo, Brandon Jennings, Nic Batum and DeMar DeRozan. (It’s worth noting here that Memphis is confident that it can retain Conley.)

The Knicks, of course, aren’t limited to chasing players on the free-agent market. Their available cap space would allow them to absorb contracts via trade as well.

The trade route is an option that had been discussed among members of the front office late in the season, per sources with knowledge of the talks; one player some in the organization are fond of is Darren Collison, who backed up Rondo in Sacramento this year, sources say.

Do the Knicks have the pieces to deal for Collison, scheduled to make $5.2 million next season? That’s unclear. But if they can, such a transaction would probably leave the club with enough money to spend on another starting-caliber free agent.

It’s also worth noting that the Knicks showed interest in trading for Jeff Teague prior to the 2016 trade deadline; there was some internal chatter last month about trying to revisit that this summer, league sources say.

Would the Knicks have enough pieces to land Teague? Who knows? Would Atlanta have any interest? Based on what happened in February, probably not.

But the idea that the Knicks are considering the trade market this summer is worth remembering as you think about the coming offseason, which will be an important one in New York.

Collision is one of the most under rated players in the NBA. I'd rather have Collision for 5 mm than any free agent that will cost twice as much. But what can we give the Kings and why would they trade him unless they commit to Seth Curry ?
TPercy @ 4/23/2016 12:40 PM
Im a fan of Collision. Would love to have him here.

Who knows what they're thinking? They don't even have a coach yet. I think it'll depend on if they want Rondo. It's probably the sort of trade that wouldn't shake out til they hire a coach and decide on Rondo and Curry.

But if they commit to Curry, they may be willing to let Collison go.

As far as what we trade for him... yeah, I have no idea.

Big time underrated. Very good two way skills that would fit what we are doing here.

Yeah - I do agree with that. I've coveted him for years. One summer the LA Clippers signed him as an unrestricted FA for like $2M and I was so pissed we didn't grab him.

crzymdups @ 4/23/2016 12:54 PM
He is a CA guy though - played for UCLA and lives there. Not sure he'd want to switch coasts, but maybe Phil can sell him on it.

New York does not have the pieces to trade for Collinson unless Divac gives him away. The pieces they have are too much to give up for Collinson. He is not worth a future 1st and you would not trade Grant, Lopez, or Willy G for him.

I hope Oladipo is on their list. They need to target young guys on the rise but more than likely they will go for the older vets.

agreed. We simply dont have the assets. Willy is our one asset and i want to keep him and everyone knows i hate trading first rounders. This is why not having our lottery pick this year really hurts

I agree on all points. Maybe if the Kings were looking to create space for a Curry contract and they just wanted a future second round pick for him it might make sense.

I read this a couple of days ago, you do know that this is just some writer making an assumption right?? There's no way someone in our front office told any media person that Phil wants to trade for D.Collison.

The big question with Collison though is if he's just what he's been which is a really good backup point guard or can he be consistent as a starter which we won't know until he's given that chance. Some of these guys can't take the pressure of being a starter and are much better as backups. I really like him though and for $5 mil i'd definitely be willing to give him the chance.

mark me down as a collison fan as well. solid defender, smart player and improved outside shot. hes no superstar and a lil injury prone but hes a capable starting PG.

We've talked about him before. I believe just about all of us like the guys game.

I want Jerian and Wroten to end all talk of trading or signing a point guard though. That would be the best thing for us.

EnySpree @ 4/23/2016 3:26 PM
We could also possibly trade for Collison and simply obsorb his contact. We're going to be under the cap. Allay for a second rounder or something

I highlighted the exact part where it says it was a team source, because I knew someone would say it was just made up or opinion. It's something the team has discussed. Per a team source. Whether it happens or not is obviously a different story, but it gives you a sense of options the team is considering.

The only other hope would be if the Knicks were willing to absorb Belineli's contract too. However it is still unlikely unless they keep Rondo or pick up Lawson in free agency plus draft a future PG. If they get someone like Lawson they might not want to have two undersized PGs. Just spit-balling here.

I think a better trade with Sacramento would be to try and get McLemore to try and rejuvenate his career.

Another guard to try to trade for his Lou Williams. He would be a nice bench player that attacks and gets to the line. Plus he actually makes his free throw attempts.
