Knicks · Walton says he won't run the Triangle in LA, it's not appropriate for the personnel he has. (page 5)
tj23 wrote:The triangle doesn't have optimal spacing. It requires more discipline and attention to detail. I saw numerous times where Galloway didn't extend all the way to the corner to spot up and KP has a lot of learning to do as he never wanted to spot up in the corner at all. He broke spacing all the time. Possibly one of the things Rambis says Fisher skated over in practice.
The goal of the Triangle is to place scorers very close to the basket and use motion, screens and passing to create the space needed to get great shots and lanes to attack the rim. We lack enough guards with breakdown ability to help make it all work. Also need more push of the ball and fast breaks to get more easy buckets per game. Without those elements the spacing is going to get bunched up.
Without the speed and athletic ability you end up with too much halfcourt and also not enough penetration when in the halfcourt. That makes things easy for the defense. Phil clearly wants to fix this aspect of the roster. It's the reason he drafted Jerian and why he's taking a flyer on Wroten. We can expect him to look for more guard help.

We run the segment offense

Goes from point A to Point B, then a brick by Melo or AA ensues.

That's kind of an empty statement, honestly. Lots of teams in the NBA have similar talent levels. They're not all gonna win the championship, but there's a difference between winning 32 games and winning 48 games. The Knicks showed they could beat Atlanta handily in back to back games this season, showing they had similar or better talent than Atlanta. Atlanta won 48 games and made the second round of the playoffs. Knicks won 32 and are considering hiring a muppet for their head coach.

So a team just a year ago had all 5 starters either voted or invited to the All Star game.....and we had a broken down Melo who had to get his peers to vote twice just to be invited.
We had more talent b4 Phil cleaned house. If u want to dig deeper.....its talent plus chemistry. Beating ATL in the regular season means nothing in the playoffs. They would sweep us .....
My point is talent is just as important if not more.....over the system. For example......I was never a Phil fan. I thought his talent won games.....not his system . I was hoping he would prove me wrong.....so far my predictions were right. We'll see next year if we improve. But based on history, Phil had to get lucky in the draft to kick start his championships.....hopefully KP is our MJ/KOBE.
I bet if KP plays like a top 5 NBA player.... They will say its the triangle system....lmao....not the talent but his system. We are giving too much credit to these geometrical shapes. Can we first have a legit starting 5 that doesn't get exposed? Then a bench that keeps the momentum going. Then we can say the system made us win games......just to make the Phil fans happy. The truth always goes bavkvto talent and chemistry. Usually if you have legit basketball talent....chemistry will flurish.....in a STABLE environment. 4 coaches in 5 yes......which is 4 different systems and GMs.....is not stable. But Melo was , regardless of the system, coaches or gm. Melo is an example of having talent. Talent shines regardless of the system.

So you don't think the system, designed by Greg Popovich pupil Mike Budenholzer has anything to do with their success? It's all their top notch talent?
I think you should take another look at Atlanta's roster.

Guess we know why he didn't want to coach the Knicks. This is my main problem with the Triangle here - does it make sense for the personnel. We have Grant and KP who could thrive in a pick and roll, pace and space offense. We force them into the Triangle.
Fisher didn't want to do that. It is at least PART of the reason he was fired, per Rambis and Phil.
It's a problem going forward.
Hopefully if Blatt comes here, he is given more autonomy.
the Lakers are plagued by stupid players who can't grasp the team concept that the triangle purports to exemplify. He's got the HC gig so congrats and good luck but beyond that that the franchise is going nowhere.

I think Russell will be an all-star someday. He needs to mature some, but he is a prototypical PG for the way the game is played now.

Swaggy P is not a core player ... he is an idiot
Russell is a smart player but he was playing for the biggest sh1t head coach and the ultimate narcissist teammate. Not really good for a kid like him.
Clarkson and Randle need to be fixed, they are terrible chuckers thanks to their putrid teachers.

Dude he was a coach in LA, part of Phil's staff who ran the triangle. Not sure what you are saying.
My point is that some people here, including yourself, tried to claim Walton was a member of Phil's coaching tree. If that were the case, wouldn't he run the Triangle?
And we know Phil wanted to run the Triangle. So the fact that Walton didn't even interview here might have had something to do with the fact that Phil told Walton he'd be expected to run the Triangle.
I think it is extremely noteworthy that one of Phil's supposed top Triangle-friendly coaches has zero interest in running the Triangle.
You dudes are starting to sound like someone trapped in a terrible relationship who keeps making excuses for their lame partner. There is very little defense left of the triangle at this point.
If Phil hires Blatt, I'll cut him some slack. Otherwise we are left with Rambis and Shaw as the only two coaches desperate enough to run the Triangle.
Just starting to sound that way?
