Yes, Vogel would be a fantastic option. He's got a little Van Gundy to him, which I like. He's a local guy from NJ.
I think of the realistic candidates, he's my top choice.
Though of course, Bird could always just re-sign him.
I cant imagine Pacers re-signing him. Bird is pretty reserved guy generally and over this past week he has uttered what can only be considered as votes of "no confidence". If he was really on the fence he would have played it even tighter to the chest. There is something he just doesn't like about Vogel at this point. Seriously, would you want to go back to Indy, if you were Vogel, after that
I loved Bird as a player, but as a GM not nearly as great. Every time Bird sees George Hill, he must be thinking about K.Leonard
The real issue will be what does Vogel want. He will immediately jump to number one on a lot of lists. I couldn't be more thrilled if he coaches the Knicks. He's better than Thib and has none of those headaches.

Agree completely with all this.
Posted this in the other Vogel thread, but here is some of what Bird has said past few days that makes it seem unlikely Vogel returns.
^^ those comments... you might as well trash your head coach.
I would think the Knicks would be an enticing destination for Vogel. He's worked w/ Phil before. He's in a position to take over a team that is set to go up. He's a defensive guy and he's starting w/ Lopez and KP.. Have to think that can kick start some of his plans. Time will tell.

He had Paul George and needed a point guard. Leonard was the 15th pick might not have developed in Indy, and its entirely possible they go in another direction.
Look at that draft:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_NBA_d...
You need a guard, a PG, who do take THAT DAY? Isiah Thomas at the 60th Pick!!!!!!
c'mon man, Bird is not thinking about that. All GM's have hindsight regrets. Fact the draft is not easy. Key to success is have good scouting and make lots of picks which increases the odds off success.

Hinkie's mantra
We not talking about Hinkie. We talking Larry Bird who traded a 15th pick for George Hill and possible regret. We talking about Spurs winning long term by making multiple picks and a taking risks.
Here is the spurs drafting record. Full of multiple picks in same year and many low round picks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Antoni...
What you see are some picks that never panned out. Also players on other teams that were used as trade bait for players or future picks.
Hinkie one example, and possible in the long run he might have succeeded. Elements of what Hinkie was trying to do is what Spurs did over a long period of time. Easy to find one example with a short history of failure.
