He will probably stay but following his words will sit down with Mark and Donnie and discuss how to make the team better so he has a chance on some real playoffs in the next years!
He is willing to leave some money on the table to help the team...

He has taken a pay cut before and is motivated to finish his career with Mavs. The opt out was to pay him a better wage with cap going up, and flex for free agents.

Nuances assumed by OP is silly. Given we always circle back to melo, lets see if KNicks contend and Melo is 35 if he is willing to take a cut to stay. Until then, why bother busting his arse for making sound business decisions. Players with chips and want to play on contenders at advanced age do this. Melo is not there yet.
