You can't compare it to any other example, because the salary cap is different than it has ever been. It will climb each year, so there will likely always be available cap space, at least for the foreseeable future. Not saying it's the right thing to do, but it is much different than managing a team cap from earlier years.
Well if you're trying to say we pay more than what we would a couple of years ago -- or what might seem like "naturally" right -- then I would agree with you.
But if you're saying pay more than market, or be the high bidder, then i say NO. I want absolutely no part of ANY player who is coming here simply because we're paying more than the number two bidder. You do that and you'll get absolutely what you pay for, a money-grubbing, heartless, selfish player. If there were no cap, I'd sing a different tune. Why would you want a player who reacts to that? Wouldn't you prefer a player who shares the teams vision of a future. I mean afterall, everyone we're talking about here is making millions. Good riddance to those seeking to squeeze every nickel out of a contract -- it only hurts the team.

he did not have a great year and has never really shown up in the postseason.
Everyone is just stuck remembering his first half this season.
Does Portland look like they miss him? Also, while being decent at everything, he is not really good at anything. I would rather take a few cheaper flyers on some unknowns like Seth Curry and maybe even solomon hill.

Once Phil decided to flush the old roster and tank, he knew it would be harder to land big FA's. IMO it's perfectly understandable that he wasn't able to get one in his only chance to do that so far. Now he has another chance but fewer star FA's to go after. I don't expect big names to realistically be signed this summer but that isn't necessarily as bad as some want to think it is.
Phil still has the chance to land a young up and coming talent in FA. I think that is something he could pull off. IMO RFA's are on the list this year.

He's a very patient and pragmatic man so he could take that approach this summer. Modest signings fits his do no harm approach.

I just don't see Phil purposefully tanking this year. This team is not as far from competing as the W/L record makes it seem. It depends on who he actually gets this summer, how the kids develop and who the coach ends up being. I feel Phil wants to make it to the playoffs next year rather than tank again.

I agree. this is not a great crop of FAs for us. Only guys I'd "spend" on are Durant, Derozan (who i actually think would blossom in our system and is the right age), Batum, Harrison Barnes (who I think has a nice well rounded game and his best bball is in front of him). The former two I'd max, and the latter two it would be lucrative but sub max. Having said that, in all cases I want someone who wants to be here. No ass-kissing ala Lebron James "The Decision" and no prima donnas. I would be happy if we could get one of those guys (and I'm realistic that we could get zero)
After that I think we're talking short deals and short money for band-aids, or prove-what-you're-made-of contracts

Another possible get would be Allen Crabbe. He has had a very good season similar to Bazemore but is under the radar because CJ McCollum has had such a breakout season. He's been playing as a reserve to CJ but if you look at his history he has constantly improved (his constant improvement of his game was a strength in his Draft Express strength/weaknesses video), Defends well for his position, and can shoot the 3. He's a RFA so the knicks would have to make a legit offer to steal him.
However I think honestly if the plan is to make a run of it with Wroten/Grant as the knicks PG, they need to be paired with a SG who can shoot the 3 and thus keep opposing defenses stuck at the perimeter to open it up for those guys to drive. Also it would be nice to have a legit 3 pt shooting specialist to receive post pass from besides Melo and KP.

RoLo/ O'quinn/ LouShould be a 40+ win team unless injuries happen. If they get a decent coach (vogel) and figure that triangle/defense out we could be a playoff team for sure.
That is a good and likely plan. Only small change could be Seraphin instead of Lou Amundson.
The knicks might be able to swoop in and get Teague (who is now an expiring and will only become lower in trade value) or Bazemore (though I still like Crabbe for his outside shot more) for relatively cheap because they will need to be paid. Its unlikely, but you never know Atlanta shouldn't try to keep their current team together.

Depending on what deal presents itself, I tend to agree with standing pat. We should line up our resources with a low win season (KP development year 2), and then shoot for the moon in the next offseason, with KP, Melo nearing the end of his deal, another lottery pick from a solid draft, and max cap room to land a stud scorer.
