Yes every year teams get money to use. it doesn't have to be for a draft pick it could be in trades for players too. For Example, say the knicks want to move Jose but the team doesn't want to take actually pay him that much salary the Knicks could offer them 3.3m and Calderon which means it only actually cost the receiving team the difference of Jose salary and the $3.3m.

Yeah, it should be enough to buy a early 2nd rounder and honestly considering how some teams have way to many picks it might be able to buy 2 second round picks or even a late first rounder.
nixluva @ 5/14/2016 8:41 PM
Yeah I think the Knicks used some that money last year and now they have the full amount for this year.

Jun 26, 2014 - The 2014 NBA Draft took place in New Jersey.
The draft rights to Louis Labeyrie was acquired by the New York Knicks from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for cash.
The New York Knicks selected Thanasis Antetokounmpo in Round 2 with Pick 21 in the 2014 NBA Draft.
The New York Knicks selected Cleanthony Early in Round 2 with Pick 4 in the 2014 NBA Draft.

97. Can cash be included as part of a trade package?

Players can be traded for cash, and cash can be included in trade packages. The amount of cash a team can pay or receive per season is limited to the "Maximum Annual Cash Limit," as shown below:

Season Amount
2011-12 $3.0 million
2012-13 $3.1 million
2013-14 $3.2 million
2014-15 $3.3 million
2015-16 $3.4 million
2016-17 $3.5 million
2017-18 $3.6 million
2018-19 $3.7 million
2019-20 $3.8 million
2020-21 $3.9 million

There are two separate limits, one for the cash a team pays as part of trades each season, and the other for the cash a team receives as part of trades each season. For example, in 2011-12 a team may pay up to $3 million as part of one trade, and receive $3 million as part of another trade.

The cash applies to the current season's limit even if it changes hands in a future season. For example, suppose a team trades a draft pick that is top-10 protected this season, top-20 protected next season, and converts to $1 million cash if a pick is not conveyed by next season. $1 million is applied to the teams' Maximum Annual Cash Limit for the current season.

Cash is NOT considered when matching salaries under the Traded Player exception. For example, a taxpaying team cannot add $3 million cash to a trade of their $5 million player in order to acquire a $10 million player.

In a sign-and-trade arrangement, if the contract contains a signing bonus, then any amount of this bonus paid by the signing team counts toward the team's Maximum Annual Cash Limit (see question number 91).

I think this is what the Knicks used their cash on last year.

Kyle O'Quinn was acquired by the New York Knicks from the Orlando Magic in exchange for a Swap 2019 2nd round picks and cash.
StarksEwing1 @ 5/14/2016 9:09 PM
Im all for getting more picks
CrushAlot @ 5/14/2016 10:13 PM
I believe it was said that they only spent $100,000? of the money allotted annually to acquire O'Quinn.
earthmansurfer @ 5/15/2016 5:04 AM
Yeah, I think we can probably get a later first round pick for cash, maybe from Philly. (I think they have 2 later picks).

I hope we never trade another 1st round pick without protection. It is going to be painful seeing "our guy" go to Toronto/Denver.

truthfully i dont want to trade a first for a long time. For the next few years we need to draft and develop
Nalod @ 5/15/2016 8:46 AM
Im surprised media didn't report it as: "Mills found a coffee can full of cash that Phil forgot he had and it can be used to buy a pick. IT was reported that he was saving for RAINY DAY money".

I pretty much agree. Occasionally talent comes along that you might give up a first for, even an unprotected first.
But Bargnani? This just screams of sexual scandal coverup. I mean no one could be that stupid...

The whole thing with the Bargnani trade is that clearly the Knicks thought the team would be winning and that the pick would be of very little value. At the time the team had just won 54 games and gone to the 2nd rd of the playoffs. It was a calculated risk that they lost on. The worst crime was not top 10 protecting the pick or something like that. In any event that is water under the bridge and this team and all of us need to be looking forward.

Fortunately there are teams who are overloaded with picks and looking to deal them. Hopefully Phil can get a good one and draft a nice player. This is not a very great draft at the top. There are a lot of guards deep into the draft tho, which is great for the Knicks.

The team win success should not have factored in the Bargnani trade at all. Bargs was simply not worth a 1st rounder. His game did not dictate it and his team was prepared to cut him. On top of his poor play he was an injury risk.

The worst crime was offering a draft pick at all point blank period. Can the knicks get the pick back no, so you are right all the knicks can do is move on but learn from the failures of past regimes.

Ok, i don't know how but i did not know that every team automatically gets $3.3 mil every year. Thank you for the info.

Would you trade a future first for a first in this draft?? I'm not sure anyone would do a even trade but you might be able to get that deal from Boston since they have so many firsts now that maybe they'd take a future first for one this year.

This is a nice second rd draft. Unless Denzel Valentine drops I might hold off on that and focus on 2-3 second rounders

Just because we want to buy/trade for a 2nd round pick doesn't mean we'll be able to though because there's other teams that will also be looking to buy/trade for 2nd round picks.

probably not this draft because its not that deep. I would rather hold onto our picks for a change
