Knicks · Hypothesis: Tie breakers for post season success... (page 1)

nothing groundbreaking here but these are my tie breakers to determine if your team can win in the playoffs:

1. starting guard/sf play
2. starting pf/c play
3. roster depth + role player play
4. coaching

i think the #1 factor in winning a post season series is for a teams's starting guards/sf to outplay the opposing team's guards/sf. not barely outplay, but significantly outplay. if this match up is close, then the next determining factor is...

...starting pf/c play. if this matchup is too close to call, then it's...overall roster depth and role player play.

and finally it comes down to coaching.

2016 playoffs to test this hypothesis out:

round 1:
cle/det (rule 1)
atl/bos (rule 1 fails so it goes to rule 2)
mia/cha (rule 1)
tor/ind (rule 1)
gsw/hou (rule 1)
lac/por (rule 1 - paul gets hurt)
okc/dal (rule 1)
sas/mem (rule 1)

round 2:
cle/atl (rule 1)
mia/tor (rule 1)
gsw/por (rule 1)
okc/sas (rule 1)

i think this hypothesis will apply to almost all playoff series going back the past few years (aka this current era of nba basketball).

so what does this mean? that the only way to really advance in the playoffs is to have superior guard/sf play to your opponent. if you can't get scorers in those positions, then you must at least have players that can cancel out the opposing teams guards and then have a superior front court.

the spurs are the poster boys for "ball movement" - but ultimately, they lost to the okc thunder b/c westbrook/durant severely outplayed the spurs wings (aka kawhi). even tho the spurs had aldridge, he was not going to be the determining factor b/c rule 1 of my hypothesis applies.

how does this apply to your ny knickerbockers? you need to get at least one guard that can score 20 ppg and change your offense to allow for that guard and melo to put up shots.

I agree 100%. And we can knock Coaches all we want. But I can bet a coaching record most of the time ties into who his guards were. When Knicks land a top notch guard or 2. The Knicks will start winning basketball games on the regular.

Can even say the rule persisted last year out west when basically GSW went unscathed while the PG gods struck down opponents in their path!
Its not always meant to be every year, but its basically true.

So why did PHil start with his front court? old age, senile? Or lack of available guards at a reasonable price?
Good to hear from you!!!

maybe its just me but I found that to be really awkwardly unfunny.

I think it was basically a lack of great options at guard. He did draft Grant who struggled a bit more than expected early but started to show what he can do at the end of the season. AA was a reasonable SG to add given what was available. This summer I suspect we see Phil try to upgrade the Backcourt players a lot more via Free Agency and the Draft is he can get a pick.

I look forward to seeing Grant and Wroten develop further. Both guards have shown they can get into the paint at the NBA level. Grant at least demonstrated his jumper was improving. Gotta hope the same can happen with Wroten. If we can add one of the young guards like Crabbe that should help a lot.
