But, yes, glad to hear Mills acknowledge this. It does sort of conflict with what Phil Jackson has said - his comments that we wouldn't get caught up in overpaying for a lead guard and maybe we'd go underground to get one. I think Phil thinks Wroten can be that guy, not sure Mills agrees. Also, Hornacek has never mentioned Wroten in any of his comments on the team's roster, particularly when talking about guards.

Wondering if Mills and JH will push to spend on a point guard. I sort of hope they do.

That would be one of the worst three point shooting backcourts in the league.

KP and Melo are both great shooters though. I agree we'd need more shooting though. Maybe try to bring in Courtney Lee as well.

Crunch time lineup:

Wroten/Grant
Turner
CLee
Melo
KP

That lineup can shoot for the most part.

I could deal with that. I made a post yesterday that i said a really great off season that could be realistic would be to get S.Curry, E,Turner and C.Lee. I'd be absolutely ecstatic if we could get those three and if we could find a way to also bring D.Williams and L.Thomas back, wow that would be awesome. Curry and Lee can shoot the rock and Turner can do everything but hit the 3 ball.

Just a thought but JH's coaching style is to let his players play. Carlisle is much more hands on calling plays all the time. Rondo may actually be a good fit with JH. They'd need to talk it out but maybe it's not such a bad fit.

Yeah, I agree. There's a lot JH does that would appeal to Rondo - push the pace, pick and roll, read and react offense. Rondo is a cerebral PG. he may see it as a good fit. I don't think we'll know if they're simpatico or not til they talk.

it would be a lot easier to "see" Rondo on this team if he had a real marksman as a SG (Ray Allen type)

I don't want headcase Rondo since we don't have a KG or Paul Pierce to pull him by the ear to keep him in check.

That said, that Pick and Pop game with KP would be absolutely lethal.

granted Phil is not coaching but he dealt with much bigger head cases than Rondo. Not that I'm advocating that but ...

Last summer when I was advocating for Rondo, I was wondering if Phil could get into his head to motivate him. I think it's a possibility. One thing Phil has proven good at is getting in guys' heads to motivate them to elevate their games.

I could see a scenario where it could work. Time will tell if they even reach out to him though. I don't think they even reached out last summer.

My thought is with Horny running the show there will be emphasis on two things. Moving the ball up the court and being able to run the offense and SHOOT. Rondo can run it but can't shoot. We need a shooter in the backcourt and I don't mean Calderon. Grant and Wroten may improve their shooting but not yet. Meanwhile Skip Bayless is suggesting Durant has interest in coming to the Knicks. Imagine. So how does that play our guard wise. Say Rolo is gone? For a guard ? We can dream but imagine Phil pulling that off. I think Rondo then makes sense. But KP a 5? Nice problem I guess.

Thought this was a pretty decent and even-handed take on Evan Turner. Turns out he's a near elite defender, and as we know, a bad outside shooter, but very good mid-range shooter and average at the rim..

Ive seen enough of Turner to think otherwise. He's a good defender. He's really good in a team concept. He's got great fundamentals but he's not Shane Battier or Artest or Spree for that matter. Not really in favor of giving him big money.

Its not about motivation. Phils last book talked a lot about Rodman. Dennis was a problem but when it started to get a bit out of hand he and Jordan stayed up one nite, smoked cigars and connected. After that, Denis fell in line MOST of the time. It was about a very strong team letting dennis be who he was, not having him adhere to every rule like everyone else. I think by the time Phil got Artest in LA he was heavy into anger management theropy and was cool.

Rondo's problem is he is very bright and can only see things his way. Basically if the system is in concert with "his way" it can be a wonderful thing. He creates division with his team and coach's by polarizing them. Sort of shutting them out. He is not easy to coach. There is no way I would sign him to a long term contract. If he did not pan out, it would be hard to trade him.

I respect his talent, and "never say never" but it would have to be a very special situation.

If Whiteside leaves the Heat, could we acquire Goran Dragic and a pick for Robin Lopez and Jose Calderon? Do we want to?

Mills was open about getting JH's feedback on personell. No way Rondo comes on without JH taking that on. I would be open to it. A motivated Rondo could be epic for this crew. Most upside of any FA not named Durant or Lebron. Best passer in the NBA

Another reason to like Turner is he should come at a price where the knicks could get another good player (Crabbe, C. Lee, Tyler Johnson) to join the starters and he could be featured as the 6th man for the knicks. At the end of the day the overall roster needs a talent upgrade and Turner should come cheaper than his overall talent is worth based on his reputation prior to Boston and his inability to hit a 3 ball (which is the stat everyone wants these days).

I could see him playing the role Gerald green (minus the 3pt shot) had in the offense in phoenix, as the off the bench scoring Big, but as a better passer which might open things up too.

Conley would be the best lead guard out there.
Rondo I'm not a big fan because he can't shoot or be effective as much in the half court.

With Hornachek I believe someone like Conley would do very well. Look at what he did for Dragic, Bledsoe and guys like that. If we still had fisher or Rambis were coach my opinion on signing Conley to a huge deal would be different. I'm no longer opposed to offering him a max because with the way Hornachek coaches a ball handling guard will be utilized well in my opinion.

nyknickzingis @ 6/10/2016 11:49 PM
I could live with this team

Lopez/Porzingis
Porzingis/Melo/Williams
Melo/Thomas
Vujacic/Galloway/Grant
Conley/Calderon

Basically a similar team to last year with a big change in Afflalo to Conley.

Need Sasha, Gallloway, Lance Thomas and Derrick Williams all comfortable running up the floor quickly, and spotting up for 3 pointers. They already know how to cut and move in the Triangle. What they breed is more freedom and comfort to shoot the ball as well as constantly run up the floor.

Jose as a backup will also be a much much more reliable and valuable backup than Grant was last year. Grant I think can carve a niche for himself as a combo guard capable of playing 2 and 1.

tj23 @ 6/13/2016 6:57 AM
I wouldn't keep Jose, Sasha, and Gallo. We have to move on from at least one of them. Jose is the best playmaker of the 3 which is really sad and says something about our playmaking on this team. Need more speed and handles.
