Knicks · Afflalo Opts Out (page 2)

The handling of Afflalo was one of the things I hated most about Rambis. He completely torched any chances of keeping him and he ruined his production on the floor and then he benched him for Sasha Vujacic, which was handled extremely poorly and pissed Afflalo off.

Afflalo was very good for this team in November-January. I watched one of the Atlanta games in early January with the Atlanta announcers feed and they were raving about how good he was.

I always expected both he and DWill to opt out though. I hope we can bring back DWill and I hope we can upgrade the two guard slots.

EnySpree @ 6/21/2016 5:20 PM
He had every opportunity to prove himself. Fisher was featuring him and relying on him in the clutch. Good riddance.... bad attitude and fake leader like Tyson Chandler. Oh whoa is me attitude.

Gotta keep searching for guys that wanna ball

i don't believe it was on rambis. this was a jackson and mills decision. afflalo was absolutely terrible on defense and if that was not bad enough he was absolutely a non-triangle player. he also has attitude issues, eg. hands on hips as galloway brought the ball up the right side in the final seconds of one game. that was a big turnoff for me and i imagine a majority of fans.

OldFan @ 6/21/2016 5:32 PM
Not sorry to see either one of these guys go. They weren't terrible but they weren't very good either. I'll take the redo and hope we can make better use of the money.

Bottom line - we knew they were opting out and we know we need a better SG and better PG.

It'd be nice to bring DWill back on an affordable deal, though I have no idea what the market would be for him.

I don't know if PJax is that hands on.

This is ALL GOOD as far as i'm concerned. The goal is to replace AA with a more long term solution that can do much more than he does. AA doesn't Pass, Drive and Finish or Defend worth a damn!!! It will make such a difference to have a more dynamic and versatile SG playing his minutes. Now we can move forward this offseason knowing we have money to put on the table and either make deals or sign FA's. UPGRADES BABY!!!

He should have never been on the team then. What a waste of time.

good Id rather have the cap space, Williams is another story would of liked to keep him. Guy had his best season and is 25. He might end up a 20 per player

Thing is everyone here thought Affalo did all those things... turns out that was a lie. It happens... but that's how teams are built. We have to keep trying to find the right mix. For every piece that fits there well be sometime that doesn't.... until it finally comes together

Apparently you forgot that this team only won 17 games the previous season. Sometimes you have to make stop gap signings. AA was a respectable vet filling a spot of need. He didn't play as well as we may have liked but that's what happens sometimes with stop gap players. In the end this one was pretty much exactly what we needed since he's opting out. In the end AA didn't lock up the cap space and we can move on to sign a better FA this time.

Short sided thinking to placate fans is not what a good GM should do. No one forgot what the team did and some people knew AA deal was a waste of time deal.

Hopefully those mistakes are not repeated on players like Turner and Jennings.

I agree about Turner and Jennings. But Afflalo was a two year deal max. The only regret might be not trading him. Not a huge investment. Market value was probably 8 mil or higher for Afflalo at the time.
nyknickzingis @ 6/22/2016 12:07 AM
To me this is great news.
We now should have 33$M in space to go after more than one quality free agent. As the season went on it became clear that Afflalo did not fit or mesh. Williams was a good bench player, but this team is missing core players.

What we build on from last year is Lopez, Porzingis, Melo, Galloway and Grant. We should look at add 2 quality free agents to that group, re-sign Lance Thomas and Galloway if its within reason to their production on the team.

One name im throwing out there is Pau Gasol. Will likely be willing to come for 15$M a year, less than the max it would take to sign Whiteside or Dwight. Then you still have money left to make a run at Batum or Brazemore. 2 signings of that level even, and we have done solid. Could make a run at Mike Conley and see whats left after to get some more talent. We are realistally in position to get 2 good players, or 1 very good player and a quality role player.

It's not about the money it's about the deal. There was no upside once they did not trade him. The team is not better by the signing at all.
