1 year rental, we'll have $60 million in cap space next summer(if Phil only signs 1 year deals) to put our chips in the middle of the pot:

Yeah, only 1 yr. If Rose had multiple years left on his deal, I think I'd be crying right now.
Personally, don't like Derek Rose, has that Marbury like Phuch Face Scowl with ego centric aura.
Was not a fan of Melo before he became a knick either.
But, we wake up today and low and behold he is a knick. I don't know his injury future and like most of you are weary of past.
I will root for him to succeed, be healthy and embrace the Zen of the triangle and his coach for next year.
KP would have been better served IMO with more continuity. Build a team that will attract FAs, this roster is being gutted without knowing who will fill the void for the next few seasons.
We havent had a decent frontcourt in more than a decade, thats gone, who will replace Rolo? He is one of the best defensive centers in the league, in his prime. Howard and his passive aggressive BS? Another retread? Is that really going to help KP's development?

Like Tommy Beer is saying -- the first thing I thought of was the huge amount of cap space next summer....We gave up Jerian but didn't give up a pick (between Grant and Justin Holiday, Grant's the better upside young player being exchanged in this deal. Justin holiday may not even make the team)...RoLo was good, better than I thought, but you guys know me on this--$13-14mm/yr was an awful lot for a guy that puts up his level of production albeit he does have good intangibles, I'll grant you. I still think we could replace RoLo, intangibles and all, for much cheaper...Agree with Chuckbuck -- ABSOLUTELY NO WAY do I want Dwight Howard now. I hope to God that's not our next move. What the hell has he done out in Houston with James Harden right next to him for Christ's sake?? I'd stay far away from Howard...I wonder if we're eyeing a big 4/5 in this draft now (Diamond Stone? AJ Hammons? I kinda like Stone's old school/no nonsense inside power game as a complement to KP). Would still like Phil to think hard about drafting one of these young PGs in this draft if he's lucky enough to get a pick, starting with Cat Barber. And my FA plan still hasn't changed -- still like Solomon Hill as a wing priority 1, then still like Jerryd Bayless as a cost effective lead guard (who are we kidding--Rose isn't staying healthy and may be nothing more than a rental here. Wroten may not even be healthy), and of course, Willy Hernangomez (forget about him for a sec -- I wonder if he's the full-time RoLo replacement?).
I heard Chad Ford saying today that ten years ago Stone goes in the top 10 but tomorrow he probably is a late first rounder.
That makes sense. Different game now..

It'll be interesting. With Hornacek running things... could be very interesting. Hornacek got his 28yr old PG.
Curious to hear Melo's reaction...
I think the Knicks have the same cap space.
Yup
Might even be a tiny bit more...plus we waived Wroten.

Oh shit, I didn't see that! Wow..
i dont belive that starters are 1 year rentals bc whethet he is ok and you resign him or terrible and you need to replace him, the starting pg spot will now cost you $15-25 mil in the summer 2017. you also just dealt your starting center at $15 mil which will cost you the same or more this summer or next. having players you want to start on rookie deals will be like gold in this cba. you ineffect will have to pay $30-40 mil for two positions so theres no such thing as rental. now i dont know grant or how he is as a player but using the triangle to judgr any pg is a disservice to the pg.

i guess Phil, though, gets bragging rights on LA. They have 60 mill this year in a crappy FA pool; we have 60 mill next
Fucking terrible trade. How do you give up a good center on a GREAT contract and a decent young PG on his rookie deal for Rose? A guy who hasn't made a single positive contribution on the court since 2011?!?! If we were that desperate for cap space next summer we couldn't have found some team to trade Lopez to where'd we get actual assets back? Or, why didn't we just not sign him last year? What the fuck are we doing? Is there any semblance of a plan?

Yep. Someone, Ford, Givony or Windhorst was talking about how valuable guys on rookie deals will be in this cap.
For those who are not aware, point guards like Westbrook, Curry, Paul and Lowry will be unrestricted free agents in 2017 and we will have 60 million dollars of cap space after this deal (and we only gave up Rolo and Grant). Winning!

Yes. TANK HARD for the best draft in years in 2017. I hear you can plug a few holes in the draft.

Also, DON'T SPEND! Save it for next year.

I hear $60m can get you 2 MAX STUDS fairly easily.
ironically the Bulls fans dislikes the trade about as much as Knick fans... 22+ pages on the realGM board. Maybe that's some comfort if you hate it?

We had plenty of cap space for LeBron in 2010. How did that work out for us? Just because we have cap space doesnt necessarily mean that we will attract the best FAs.

He is a hometown kid. Has to be tough on fans there.
The option is there now to go hard after Westbrook. Now that we got out from under Looez & Calderon's contracts

Look at the pool though.

If we strike out on Curry, CP3, and Westbrook you wouldn't still jizz yourself ending up with Gordon Hayward and Greek Freak?!
hope they GOT A BACK UP PG PLAN
And hope Rose has one of those "playing for a contract" years

I understand there are some good players out there, we aren't a lock to sign any of them. This team as you know has been a hot mess for 16 years. I believe most FAs who arent just out for a big paycheck are trying to find a winning situation. Moves like this would make me think twice if I were an FA.
