Knicks · Backdoor Power Move (page 1)

Maybe, I'm just a delusional Knick fan grasping at straws but does anyone else think that Melo's sudden change of heart about playing for the Olympic team had more to do with being able to spend quality one on one time with KD before the teams can actually negotiate with free agents than wanting to play for Team USA??? Not saying that he's not patriotic but I remember him being on the fence about it and expressing concerns about Zika and then all of a sudden both he & KD were all in as many other superstars dropped out. Hmmmmm....

Not saying it's going to work but I find being able to get him alone in a restaurant or strip club or on a private plane on the way to the team USA training to pitch the Knicks case is a brilliant stratagem and if it works...Hallelujah.

Melo was always super into playing for the Olympic team though. He wants to be the first player to play in four Olympics and win three golds for USA basketball.

would make him the only male bb player to accomplish that. Ever. I think its that simple... everything else is icing. No doubt he will recruit

That's probably true I just remember reading this http://www.foxsports.com/nba/story/carme...

if we land a big FA I will be pretty shocked. I see Noah, Gasol, Turner... overpaying for guys like that. I cant envision Knicks landing anyone from the A crowd. I Will be impressed and happy to be wrong

Like Joining a church to get closer to a girl you like?

Im thinking Melo is genuine to want that distinction.
How many players have NCAA chip, 4 gold metals and the elusive NBA Chip!!!
Without the NBA chip, his point total, NCAA and Gold's make him first ballot HOF.
Sorry Chuck.

main reason I am warming to the Rose trade. Its easy to see how hard it will be to move the needle. It seems they would rather try this and fail and have a lottery pick than plow through another year with essentially the same guys.
SwishAndDish13 @ 6/28/2016 2:41 PM
I see several reasons. (1) The personal accomplishments is obvious. (2) Without LeBron, he is almost the leader (not the best player) but the leader of the team from a tenure, experience, players respect him. (3) Recruit/Start building his squad for a chip. This may play out in 2017, but his boys (Wade & LeBron) did the same thing back in 08 then played it out when they could. Following the inevitable 2017 lockout, the Knicks will be in good position. I strongly doubt they will come out of the lockout with defined contracts and a non-tiered cap structure that can be easily gamed and manipulated.

while i could see Jose being valuable for short minutes off the bench, this is a huge case of addition by subtraction. Perfect example of why stats (and essentially advanced stats) can be over-rated and misused. The energy level on offense will take a quantum leap even if we get last year's (beginning of year) Rose.

Im getting a good vibe on big FA too. Why not us? We are primed. Yes, maybe a year early but we're headed in the right direction

melo shouldn't go. he is 32, has logged 35,000 nba minutes, and needs to care for his body. this is a mistake. he hasn't played a whole season as a knick since he came here and this won't help change that trend one bit.

He's working out anyway so this is no different. The amount of minutes and effort in the Olympics is NOTHING like a full NBA season. He won't be doing anything different than he's already doing in pick up games and workouts. Just hope he gets thru it healthy and comes to camp sharp and in great shape like last time.

As for the idea of Melo wanting to spend more time with KD, I don't think it had anything to do with Melo doing the Olympic thing but he sure as heck has milked it to the fullest that they've been together. They've been spending a LOT of time together and it can't hurt.

ActionJackson @ 6/28/2016 4:02 PM
I actually just said in the Best Fit at SG thread that I actually think that Nicolas Batum is secretly the Knicks hush hush pick to throw Max (or almost Max)Money at but their using Melo to test the water with KD before the teams can officially meet with him. Honestly, I would love Batum on this roster cause he would fill any voids that Rose has in the backcourt by guarding opposing PGs like Klay does for Curry and he also could become the main facilitator role as a Power Guard type which would free Melo up to become a pure offensive weapon again. But if Melo's hail mary prayer is caught by KD in the back of the end zone I am totally on board with that too.

Melo was as sharp as ever following the 2012 Olympics and finished 3rd in MVP voting that season. Let him represent the USA, do some recruiting, hang with his friends, and give us a SuperMelo/DadMelo season afterwards!

His best season as a Knick was after the Olympics. That year he didn't break down during the regular season but D12 almost ended his career when he flagrantly fouled him. That was why he missed games.
