Knicks · Not sure everyone is ready for what's about to happen?? (page 1)

Players are about to get crazy contracts and bigger market teams are about to be out bid by lower market teams that will pay $4-$5 million per year more to get some of these players to come play for them because they know that's what they'll have to do to get some of these guys to come to their team. Every team has at least $20 million to spend this off season and they know that if these players were offered the same amount of money from New York and Utah that they'll pick New York but a lot of these players are getting ready to get their first big contract and maybe their only big contract so they're not gonna turn down millions of dollars knowing that this could be their last big contract they ever sign and these lower market teams know that this is their chance to get a good name to come to their team so they won't mind over paying to get them.

The Knicks are gonna need to strike fast on a big name before that player is able to do his rounds and hear other offers from some of these teams so i hope Phil knows exactly which player he wants the most and hopefully can come away with a legit center and SG as quick as he possibly can before their prices get out of hand.

worst thing to do would be to strike fast. everyone has money but there are only a certain amount of roster spots. once that first wave of signings is off the board teams will have a lot more leverage as the number of starting spots and rotation spots dwindles.

this is reminiscent of NFL free agency - every year the worst contracts are the ones handed out in that first day. even last year, Greg Monroe (LOL) was the big free agent and Milwaukee less than 12 months later couldn't be more eager to get rid of him.

Phil will be patient.

Regardless of the numbers a bad contract is a bad contract...the only difference is a year later after they sign the deal and the team sours on them, as opposed to looking someone to take 10-15 mill off your hands it will be 20-25

The only exception I can think of is if the Knicks go after a lot of third tier guys instead of a big name. Sometimes being the first team to pitch a guy who isn't asking for anything close to a max deal are worth pursuing. For example, If the Knicks show Courtney Lee a lot of love who knows maybe he signs a 4 year, $40 mil deal. While everyone else is waiting in line for Durant or LeBron

I disagree and think they need to get their top guy as soon as they can and then they can wait to fill out the rest of the roster. Unless Phil is planning on not going after the bigger names and just wants to put decent/good players around Melo, KP and Rose then he can wait it out but if he's looking to get at least one big name then he needs to get that guy ASAP.

EnySpree @ 6/29/2016 11:43 AM
Phil is only going to pounce on Durant... the rest of the free agents can kick rocks. The Knicks don't need to be trying to out bid other teams for mediocre talent. You wait till the dust settles and then you make a move. You want ball players. The crEam will rise

It's not even close to the way NFL free agency goes and it's not always the worst contracts that are handed out early and i could show multiple examples both ways but it's not really worth the time. Good and bad contracts will be handed out early and later in the process which happens every year. I don't care either way cause i realize that we're still two years away from finishing this rebuild-retool job as long as he makes the right signings whether they're early or later in the off season.

I'm a little tired of arguments over money that doesn't belong to me. Free agency starts in another 3 days. Let's relax and see how things shake out.

The market will be set by the first wave of signings. keep in mind most vets want to win as well, money is not going to be the entire factor

its not about money, its about the cap and flexibility.
