Knicks · Anyone else think Jax was told to get off his sss and forget about planting his triangulated puppet Rambis ? (page 1)

"Phil Jackson says that a recent conversation with New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony factored into his decision to take a "win now" approach with the team this summer"

"Courtney Lee said Phil Jackson told him that Jeff Hornacek will have the freedom to run what he wants, with the triangle as a basic format"

Nice spins, Jackson was directed to change course and drop PHILosophizing about the purity of the process

Jackson was stealing $. Glad Isiah promoted Hornachek to Dolan and swami was pressured to hire. Team can now play fluid basketball instead of being restricted to one man's adherence to a system

Just make up some sheet if it fits your agenda. Nonsense!

Yeh, he suddenly does a 360" on coach, system and rebuild. Must have been a dreamy midnight revelation from above. He was told to get off his sss

What does it matter? Phil and his staff executed a very good offseason plan. He didn't half-ass this process. Hiring Hornacek was a great decision IMO. Phil followed that up with getting JH the guards he needed to play the way he wants to coach the team. It really is immaterial what or who influenced Phil's change. It was a logical plan and the team is better at the very least on paper and possibly a contender if things work as hoped for.

Okay...and?

So what if all that is true?

He did a 360 as directed. Per SI: "As of mid-April, Jackson was all set on hiring his guy, Kurt Rambis, telling the New York media in one of his rare press sessions, “Only people I know will be in the interview process.” He wanted his former Lakers assistant because he would run his beloved triangle offense. As Jackson put it, “That’s what I was brought here for: to install a system. It’s all part of the package.”

What’s more, Jackson and Rambis held a post-season, two-day Triangle mini-camp for players — virtually unheard of in NBA circles but a sure sign that they were committed to going forward with an offense that neither Carmelo Anthony nor Porzingis were thrilled about running.

Then he had a dramatic shift. Jackson ended up interviewing two coaches he has no past ties with and don’t run the Triangle — David Blatt and Frank Vogel — before settling on Hornacek. Jackson also did not know Hornacek, who did not run the Triangle when he went 101-112 with the Suns"

Understand Nixluva --I like and have endorsed the Horny hire from the announcement and believe the entire front office did a fairly nice job in the offseason overhaul but this is the point that matters: if Jackson was still allowed to follow his personal agenda we'd have Rambis as coach and still be forcing the triangle down the throats of players, limiting our attraction to top fa's and likely setting ourselves up for another mediocre season and possibly future defections including KP.

Im grateful to those who altered our path and look forward to some better basketball this season

Welpee @ 7/9/2016 12:51 PM
Yeah, Jackson sat around doing nothing previously, yet people are whining about losing players (Lopez, Williams, Galloway and Grant) he brought in?

Whose complaining about losing Williams, Galloway and Grant. Their mothers?

nykshaknbake @ 7/9/2016 1:06 PM
Well if he did get forced to change he sure got going in a hurry. Not sure I like the noah signing but it's possible we have a pretty solid team compared to last. Most of the moves have been solid.
Nalod @ 7/9/2016 1:06 PM
Phil does a 360, he is right back at the same place.

You know when in the past GM's tell stuff, then we get mad cuz it did not happen, or we showed our hand. Phil showed the media his ass.
Who The bits about Rambis, we'll we just don't know if that was giving his old friend respect.
I think if Dolan told Phil what to do, he'd walk.
Don't worry, if phil succeeds you can be a happy knick fan. If they don't, you can hate and also be happy.
Haters can't lose, they got all angles covered!!! All emotions covered.

Solid is a good adjective of our offseason, hopefully it can be labeled tremendous next year now that more like Horny are involved in our direction and decisions

a 360 is a circle that means we should have rambis and the triangle i think you mean a 180. but why complain if its better for the team?

This has been a pet peave of mine since Jason Kidd made a comment about turning the Nets around 360 degrees. Guys, 360 degree=same spot as you were before, 180 degree turn=doing the opposite of what you were doing.

I honestly think there is some validity to this. Before Phil's road trip, signs were pointing to Rambis, many within the Knicks organization believed it would be Rambis. Then Melo puts word out he doesn't want Rambis and Phil goes on his trip and comes back and in short order hires Hornacek and trades for DRose - a point guard centric head coach who has familiarity with the Triangle but doesn't run it and trades for a one time all-star pg after saying he wouldn't overpay for one.

I think Phil may have gotten some pressure from Melo and Mills. I said this at the time and people freaked right the hell out. I'm not sure why it is so controversial. Phil even admitted in the most recent press conference he asked Melo "are we moving fast enough for you?" To me that implies the Rambis and Rolo and Grant centered team was not moving fast enough for Melo.

Obviously we will never know the full story. But I think it is fair for anyone to note that Phil had a change in approach in his coaching search and in the sense of making more "win now" type trades and free agent moves with Rose and Noah.

I think Phil is a very very smart person and has one of the best basketball minds in the game and makes his own decisions on his own. People keep forgetting that in the very beginning he said that he wants someone that runs a system (system basketball) and that it didn't have to be the triangle as long as it was a system and not just players running around doing ISO basketball (M.Woodson) but of course because his first hire was D.Fisher and that he wanted Fish to run the triangle that everyone just automatically started saying that that was the only system he wanted to run even though those words never came out of Phil's mouth. How bout we just be happy that Phil has hired a guy in Hornacek that will hopefully run a system that wins games.

I think its because it's seemingly without much of a point other an axe-grinding.

It does seem like an attempt to endorse (at least somewhat) the moves but take Jackson down at peg or two at the same time.

Which is fine if that's what does it for you, but again, to me, seems without much of a point.

Pressure from Melo and Mills who are UNDER Phil is not the right verbiage. Phil can really only get pressure from Dolan. If Melo and Mills made appeals to Phil and he decided to listen then what's wrong with that? The inference made by the OP is that Phil was MADE to do all of this as opposed to him coming to his own conclusion with the input from Melo, Mills or whoever.

Phil was out of the city by himself for a good while and from what i've read he wasn't really in contact with anyone like Melo. No one had heard anything from Phil and the media was writing negative stories about him. No doubt he wanted to really think about what he should do and i'm pretty sure he had gotten input from Mills and Warkentien etc. The decision to hire Hornacek seems like a Phil decision ALL THE WAY. I'm sure Mills was in favor of Blatt and others likely wanted Phil to choose Vogel. So how do we square the notion that he was forced to hire Hornacek???
