Phil Jackson: Today’s NBAers too inept to run triangle, so let’s run triangle

Phil Jackson thought NBA players lack the skill to play the triangle offense, yet insisted in running it with the dismal Knicks last season.

In Part 3 of Charley Rosen’s Phil Jackson Chronicles, this installment from December 2015, Jackson most notably critiques today’s generation of NBA players and their ability to fit into his desired system — which is expected to remain mostly intact with the Knicks next season, albeit with a few tweaks by new coach Jeff Hornacek.

“Today’s players simply lack the skills to play the triangle,” Jackson said. “They know how to play one-on-one, catch-and-shoot, and they’ve mastered crossover dribbles, spins, playing off of screens and step-back shots. They don’t know how to execute things like inside-reverse pivots and other basic footwork. They have no sense of timing or organization. They don’t really know how to play five-on-five basketball. It’s strictly generational.

“That’s why [Derek Fisher] wants to uptempo the offense. And why he spends a half-hour before practice doing lots of skills work.”

That last bit seemed to be praise for Fisher, whom Jackson fired approximately two months later. He also credited Fisher for earning the attention of his players, another aspect tossed out the window when Fisher was canned amid the Knicks’ downfall.

“The guys are attentive to Fish and the staff and really pulling for each other,” said Jackson, who overhauled the roster and replaced the coach yet again after a 32-50 finish.

I'm not sure that I understand your take here. Phil is talking about the Technical aspects of the Triangle and not the Triangle Culture that you often speak of. He still very much believes in that culture. What is going to change is the technical aspects of how they run the Triangle. Hornacek is going to make things easier for the players to succeed. Infusing simpler concepts into the Triangle spacing with a more aggressive and instinctive approach.

Pushing the pace and looking for early offense was a part of the Triangle but this team had trouble actually applying that. Adding Rose, Lee, Jennings and Holiday should help in this regard. All of these guards can run the floor and push as a ball handler. More Transition baskets and quick strikes will help this team. Then when they do get into the halfcourt sets they should still be looking to get penetration early in the shot clock. After looking for early offense then we should see the Knicks set up in the Side Triangle and work. The only difference I expect is that there will be 3pt spacing in this version of the Triangle. That should allow our quick guards to get into the lane and be more successful.
