Knicks · This is Really Pretty Good, As Long As . . . (page 1)

Malcolm @ 8/3/2016 7:28 PM
Players have been interested this off-season in coming to play for the Knicks.

Noah, Jennings, Randle, Lee, Kuzminskas, Hernangomez . . .

This is quantity in which there's likely to be some quality.

So you have to give Phil Jackson props for enginnering this, even if it's too
bad that Lopez and Williams are gone.

Then there's Rambis. He has his limitations, so I understand how Hornacek is
a promising alternative.

Overall, this is really pretty good . . . as long as they're really going to run the
Triangle after "8 seconds".

I'm fine with pushing the ball quickly . . . and then setting up the Triangle
if there's no immediate opportunity.

But that means you still gotta learn and develope the Triangle.

The Knicks were not a mature Triangle team last year by any means. And now
there are new people with little or no experience.

If a Triangle workshop made sense in May . . . it makes even more sense now.

That's what I'm waiting to see . . .

nixluva @ 8/3/2016 8:32 PM
Well it's really impossible to say just how Hornacek is going to make use of the Triangle. If he's going to run the full system with all of it's very distinct rules then it would be just as difficult for this new group to master as others before. I don't get the idea that JH is planning to run things quite that way.

One misunderstanding is that the Triangle ALWAYS had Early Transition as part of the offense. So really the failure of our team to effectively run the floor and get easy buckets wasn't about the Triangle.

Learn the seven dimensions of a sound offense

By Phil Jackson and Tex Winter

An effective offense, to my way of thinking, features the following dimensions.
1. Penetration. Players must penetrate the defense, and the best way to do this is the fast break, because basketball is a full-court game, from baseline to baseline.
---
Finally, I want the offense to flow from rebound to fast break, to quick offense, to a system of offense. The defenses in the NBA are so good because the players are so big, quick, and well coached. Add the pressure that the 24-second clock rule applies to the offense to find a good shot, and the defense gets even better.

http://www.humankinetics.com/excerpts/ex...

So I think JH's main focus will be on MASSIVELY improving that very first part of the offense. Pushing the ball and probing the defense looking for early offense. If there are no scoring opportunities then I suspect they'll use SOME Side Triangle but also a few other looks that JH will add to the mix.

I expect JH to tweak the Triangle so that he can do some of the things he's always done. Moving players further out behind the 3pt line. Using the Spurs "Hammer Play", which shouldn't be a problem adding to the Triangle.

The main thing is just tweaking the Triangle so that JH can make better use of the talent on this roster. Making them less predictable and more efficient.

I think taking a chance on Rose for one year seems like the right move after seeing Westbrook is staying in OKC.

Adding Rose was deeper than that. It was a great chess move. It's like sacrificing a rook, to increase the possibility of check mate. Without Rose, I'm not sure if the other players would follow. It also provides some marketing appeal for other top PG's looking to see how Rose can flourish in the triangle. My guess is either Rose or Jennings will be signed to a long term contract, and Randal will be moved up to a backup role. I knew Phil would have a slow start, because he's a rookie GM. But it's time for the Phil haters (like myself) to give him his props. I can't give him props on KP though.....I believe KP landing on his lap. If Russel or OK4 was available, he would've jumped on them instead, and it would've been a disaster.....Just my belief. But so far, everything is working out great for short term and long term success.

I agree. I was just reacting to Russell staying in okc. Also, I think you are right about Rose/Jennings. I think one of them gets a long term deal. Also, Rose, Jennings, and Jrue are the top free agent point guards in 17 I believe.

The one thing I'll say about Phil is that everything he said before the draft fit only 3 guys KAT, KP and WCS! He talked about a big that was quick and agile enough to defend PnR and protect the rim. He talked about a big that could do what Tyson used to do. That was his biggest priority. I don't believe he takes Russell or OK4 over KP. Not against the direction of his most trusted scout. Gaines entire purpose was to help evaluate talent cuz Phil said he can't do it. It takes a special talent to see what a player can become so he mostly leaves it to his scouts and in particular Gaines.

I would guess Lowry and Curry never hit the market. Schroeder is restricted I believe. Paul might consider the Knicks.
