Knicks · LeBron & Maverick Carter responds to Phil Jackson 'posse' reference... (page 2)

GoNyGoNyGo @ 11/15/2016 5:18 PM
Oh poor Lebron...he got called out for being a pain in the a$$ while trying to get special treatment for himself and his "buddies". Is "buddies" ok, or are we going to nitpick every single word used by anyone at anytime. The Political Correctness is at a ridiculous level. PJax does not owe Lebron anything.

PJax called out his actions and character not his race. The KING should be ashamed of himself. He got called out and then played the race card...

As if anything Phil says is going to stop Lebron from making the Billion Dollars that he is after!

Whether you call these guys a posse, entourage, or whatever, it is what it is. LeBron even has a guy nicknamed "Bags" who is known only as such across the NBA, for being Lebron's bag guy. I mean come on. Word choice aside, did Phil really say anything inaccurate? Phil was insinuating that LeBron's friends are riding his coat-tails to success. There is nothing else to that statement or choice of words.

Why isn't he? Maybe that is what LeBron is talking about.

I don't get why you would feel offended. Here is the context:

to answer your question...its because we were/are sad, sensitive and skeptical now (due to recent events). i know people dont get that...or they say we should get over it - but thats the reality... many folks like this are EXTREMELY sensitive right now

after re-reading the comments and getting the WHOLE story, i explained that i dont think phil is a racist. it was simply a poor choice of words given the recent climate.

i hope these recents events gives people the opportunity to raise their Emotional Intelligence Quotient (Martin im not just referring to you). right now if a middle aged white dude answers on the Family Feud "we think italy has the most beuatiful people in the world", black people will look at them with a side eye - like my wife and i did when watching the show. of course thats foolish, but its an EMOTIONAL response that requires empathy right now - it will pass. once we clear our heads, we will realize whats actually right or wrong...but right now we're super sensitive. #empathy we dont trust our fellow citizens based on the election results.

itll pass though - there's just a lot of tension right now

"It had to hurt when they lost LeBron," Jackson said. "That was definitely a slap in the face. But there were a lot of little things that came out of that. When LeBron was playing with the Heat, they went to Cleveland, and he wanted to spend the night. They don't do overnights. Teams just don't. So now [coach Erik] Spoelstra has to text Riley and say, 'What do I do in this situation?' And Pat, who has iron-fist rules, answers, 'You are on the plane. You are with this team.' You can't hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland.

The context suggests that Phil was talking about the people LeBron was hanging out with, including his family (mom).

Why were you offended by this?

which reminds me! i have to be very careful in using the word "US". not all of "US" think the same way and thats great. knicks1248 is black and thinks differently. i completely respect that! but for some of us, were HIGHLY sensitive right now. it'll pass and we'll get over it.

but i'll never call how someone reacts to anything "stupid". its just the reality of how they react. it might be misinform, misinterpreted or misguided but i dont think its STUPID. cuz then youre referring to ME and MY STUPID response to initially hearing the quotes (i was offended). lol. when i put the emotion aside and thought rationally i realized that it was two things: poor choice of words + hyper-sensitive reactions (which hopefully people can understand why)

NYKBocker wrote:Never knew posse has racist undertones. I am really getting old.

You need a unique upbringing to understand such nuances..From my experiences the term "Posse" and today's understanding of what it means came from Jamaica..All the immigrant rude boys from Jamaica in Brooklyn doing dirty wanted to be known as a posse..The term came from a powerful Jamaican gang called the "Shower Posse" which started in the 1970s..It controlled territory in Jamaica and part of the government with a political wing..It had a huge presence in North America..It was even said to have CIA ties...The current leader Chris "Duda", son of the original leader, was extradited to the US a few years ago..Obama wanted him and shut down all immigration from Jamaica for a few days until the government turned him over..Businessmen from Jamaica were showing up at JFK and getting turn back before the government folded..The US intercepted cell phone conversations between Chis "Duda", who was in hiding from the US at the time, and the Prime Minister of Jamaica..The US demanded they turn him over and he arrested in Jamaica, in a cab, wearing a woman's wig and dress..He was tipped off the police/military was coming and they had no choice..He is currently in jail in the US some where...This was Noriega type stuff..So from the black NY perspective, there it is...

So Phil, being around players over the years probably heard the term from his players and didn't understand it..Nor, do many here it seems...So put yourself in LeBron's shoes who has worked hard molding his image over the years hearing this from Phil...

In today's US if you look at someone your a racist. Keep your eyes on the ground and keep walking. I'm sure Carter somehow found offense because he thought posse is a hanger on.

I think a lot of white people--I mean the kind of normal every day caring easy going hard working individuals who make up a lot of this country--DO NOT want to be lumped in as racist. This comment does nothing but irritate millions of people who believe they have to step on glass to get a word out of their mouth when nothing is meant by it? Big mistake by Lebron--all I can say is watch the NFL numbers in ratings--same thing can happen to any sport if people become turned off. Respect goes both ways. Calling out Phil as racist and saying he has lost respect for Phil--well Lebron my guess is you may not sell quite that many shoes over the next 6 months--my guess.

I refer to any group of friends as a posse, doesn't matter the nationality, if you travel in a group and your all about the same thing, that's your posse..

If phil say Justin beiber always traveling with his posse, which includes is manager, publicist, his friends, his barbar, would that be racist

If your rolling deep every where you go, it's either your posse on entourage..

I was just about to post a similar response. How the neck did Phil get his job as a President of Basketball operations without any front office experience, oh yeah Dolan and Phil had a mutual friend. Is that exactly the same no but to refer to legitimate business men as part of James "posse" could be offensive. Someone might question why were they not called business associates? Now that does not mean what Phil said 2as meant to be racist but the whole conversation was to trash James as being a diva. So Jackson was trying to be dismisal of LeBron's associates and not give them the respect they may deserve.

The bottom line is that Phil should have not said anything about James, Riley, or anyone else. Part of his job is to develop relationships to broker trades and get FAs but instead Phil keeps putting his foot in his mouth. He is not a coach anymore and he needs to stop acting like it. Rich Paul may have players that could help the Knicks in the future.

Dont know what to believe. On the one hand, Phil takes great pleasure in tweaking pretty much everyone. One the other hand, he's old enough not to keep track of the shelf life of some expressions. Glad it happened either way, would rather Phil walk it as an exec before he talks it.
