Knicks · I'm convinced now we are fine either way. (page 1)

KP4Life @ 11/21/2016 3:49 PM
Even if we barely make the playoffs or do, Im confident our scouts will find a gem. Phils picks in the draft have been mostly stellar. If Hernangomez becomes a starter by next year (or even the end of this one) I will be VERY impressed. That means we basically got a second rounder that's the equivalent of like a 1st rounder. Almost Spurs like in drafting.

Imo what we should do no matter what is trade down to get lower in the draft, possibly to Frank Jackson to pair with KP. Im hoping Melo would consider a trade if we don't make the playoffs, but I kinda doubt that will happen, he seems to love living in NYC. If he did agree maybe we could get one of the PGs 1-10. Its important to find a young stud to pair with KP this draft.

A couple of things...

Willy looks like he is going to be a very good player, but i don't expect him to be a starter. Porzingis should be a center in the future. Willy probably isn't quick enough to defend 4s constantly. I think he will make an excellent 6th man who will get his 24-28 mpg in a 3 man rotation up front with KP and possibly Melo down the road. Still a great role for him, and he will eventually see starter's minutes off the bench. I agree that we will be fine either way, because we have a direction.

I would like to continue to build from within. Similar to the reputation Atlanta has as "Hawks University" they have become a perennial playoff team not by making overhauls but by continuity and plugging in new pieces around a consistent core. They have had natural progression by moving on from Teague with his replacement "in-house." Same with replacing Carroll with Bazemore.

We finally have an opportunity to do that. Doesn't mean every player we acquire needs to be thru the draft, but adding players as we go without major overhauls will help building chemistry. We have KP and Melo as the main components. I hope Melo continues to be here and stays until he retires. He does a lot of good for this organization. He is helping to develop KP and wants to be here. He can slowly settle into a complimentary role over time. Lee and Noah are signed long-term. Noah will eventually be moved to a limited bench role, while KP transitions to center and Willy's minutes increase off the bench. Lee is a fine role player for many more years. The PG situation is the biggest question mark, we will see what happens there. Holiday looks to be a keeper, and Lance Thomas is probably a keeper as well. Both provide versatility off the bench. I think we need to eventually find a forward who can fit alongside Melo and KP, and figure out the PG situation, but everything else should be based on in-house player development and continuity. But like you said, we are fine either way.

Our first rounder really really should be a Pg. Randle is good I like that kid and I want him signed, however if we could get a gem of a Pg in the draft to run with Kp in the future I'm one happy man. I don't see Rose returning honestly and Jennings may just become our starter. So if we have Jennings, draft Pg and Randle as a rotation I'm stoked.

IMO all this talk about Rose is extremely premature. Rose has been laying back. He knows that it's a long season and he has to be reasonable in his approach to the year. We haven't seen the best of him yet and he's not really forcing things. There will come a time when Rose is much more comfortable and he starts to turn it up a bit. This early in the year with this much talent around him it's not necessary to do that every game. Gradually figuring things out with his new teammates is a good approach.

hmm? rose is laying back? i mean why would he do that? its his contract year - he should be playing hard ALL the time. especially when he knows the next fall might be his last.

im not buying that. sure hes a solid player but he cant shoot - except for line drives, and he cant finish at the rim.

hopefully rose is the type of player you give a one year rental to. but knowing the knicks, they will give him a max contract for 4-5 years

my plan? (please read my signature. lol). build around KP. once the knicks realize that this is HIS team (now and not a few yrs from now, theyll be better off). Were stuck with the shadow formerly known as joakim noah for the next 4 yrs. but hopefully we can draft a PG and sign a good PG like george hill (who's smart, good on offense AND defense)

I can actually see Rose and Jennings both returning as well, if we are unable to land Chris Paul. If we resign Jennings and Holiday, and let Rose go, we won't open up a lot of cap space, so they may just decide to resign him since he's only 28 years old. Another option i could see is promoting Jennings and signing a guy like Tyreke Evans as 6th man. He would bring more offense off the bench, and Phil loves big, versatile guards. But i can definitely see Rose and jennings both returning otherwise.

Maybe saying Rose is adjusting his approach to how he plays is a better description.
"It takes time just learning a system for one, getting used to one another, figuring out how you're going to affect the game in your own little way," Rose said. "It takes sacrificing, ya know.

"If I did half the things I did back in Chicago, I would look stupid out there, coming out and shooting some of the shots I shot in Chicago," he added. "In Chicago I had to shoot those shots for us even to have a chance. Here I'm trying to read the game."

Why not? Unless the Knicks can nab CP3 I see Rose returning.

i dont see rose returning...not at 20 mill.

Who do you think we sign in place of him, if you don't see him returning? Remember, maintaining cap space isn't a guarantee. The Knicks have long-term contracts that increase each season and the cap will inevitably level off, so cap space for our team will probably be at it's highest point this summer, compared to the following summers. Top players will continue to command the same type of contracts they got last summer. So my point is, if you don't resign Rose, you better have a replacement in mind (or replacement for Jennings, who could possibly become the starter.) Rose isn't an ideal fit, but letting him go just to avoid paying top dollar, and not being able to afford a good replacement in future years, doesn't seem like an ideal scenario.

However we are forgetting that Rose will probably command a large contract, one I don't want when there are better options in a deep draft, or try and win now with Chris Paul. Jennings is a more natural distributor anyways so maybe keeping him to fuel Kristaps is a better move than paying a lot of money to bring Rose back. I think Rose is being seen as sort of a rental before they start to put prices around Kristaps from the draft, or acquiring young players. Also, I never like to say it but he is one injury prone dude, is offering him a four year deal for near max money really something we want to tie ourselves to as Melo exits his prime and Kristaps is building to his?

I think this team could use a wing just as bad

Yes that is a better description of what I mean. Rose isn't forcing things and contrary to those who doubted him he's not playing like a guy only concerned about his next contract!!!

I totally disagree with Ned regarding the direction of the team. THIS IS A TEAM BUILT AROUND KP!!! Instead of a bunch of kids KP has vets who can help him win NOW! Why not let KP play in meaningful games and possibly playoffs? That will do more for KP than a bunch of kids that don't know what they're doing.

Having Rose and BJ is a benefit to KP and not a detriment to his development!!!

I agree. Also, Rose talked about being a more mature player now. Rose and Jennings were amazing and are making it easier for their teammates. The Knicks didn't have anything close to that at the point last year.
“It’s a different stage,” he said, comparing his play now with his style when he first came into the N.B.A. “I was young and I was reckless. I was learning the league. I think my I.Q. got a lot higher than when I first got into the league. Now I got a chance to re-establish myself here and just take off again.”
