Knicks · Oak and Hernagomez (page 1)

In recent game, I saw a lot of Oak in Hernagomez.
Do you agree or not?
holfresh @ 12/1/2016 9:18 AM
Why not explain what you think are the similarities...
Chandler @ 12/1/2016 9:41 AM
Don't see it. Willy reminds me more of mchale. He has excellent footwork eg up and unders

Now plumlee is a different story

SupremeCommander @ 12/1/2016 9:48 AM
no one reminds me of Oak. The guy was an enforcer, rebounder, and automatic from 18 ft
nyknickzingis @ 12/1/2016 9:49 AM
Hernangomez is a crafty lefty, but his skillset is not on par with Okafor.
I think Willy will be a good pro. More of a typical Euro player, in that he is a little less effective on defense, very effective on offense. If he can step to that baseline and make that jumper he showed yesterday on a consistent basis, he will get minutes.

I think a reasonable expectation from him is 12 points, 6 boards a night type of big if he is given starter minutes. His most post moves are solid, his finishing plays around the rim solid and so I see no reason so long as he has good guards and players that draw attention from the defense around him that he can not provide impact.

I watched Plum in the Dleague game and the kid has a high motor, very vocal on Defense, and far different persona than Oak.

Plum has the "Please sir can I have another" ROTC/Military aspect to him and it comes out on the court. But in a good way.
He seems to very much enjoy the game. His attention to detail in his fundamentals are exceptional and for this reason I would keep him and develop him. His movements are calculated and his body core is very strong.
Not sure he is quick enough or fluid like Steve Adams. Plum is an interesting study.

As for Willy, I'd say there is a bit of Oak in him not for his "nasty", but he seems to do a lot of things well but nothing exceptional. That's not a knock btw. Today, Oak would be undersized and not athletic enough to play in todays NBA.

What is 21 year old Oak vs. 21 year old Willy? I don't know.

Willy defensively lacks the fundamentals and needs work. He is rookie, of course he does!!!!
Plum needs softer hands and more fluid offensive game. Put them together you have David Robinson!!!
Oh wait, have to do white on white, so lets say "Pau Gasol" but without the outside shot.

He's so crafty he made you think he was lefty!

I don't see any similarities with Oak except being short for his position. Oak went up against the Davis boys, Salley, McHale and the like. Willy is now going up against the Lopez boys, Embiid, Cousins, Towns, Jordan, Gasol and the like.

Oak never had Willy's footwork offensively or hands and finish. Oak was a rebounding machine and an enforcer. Willy is more a shorter Splitter and/or Marc Gasol.

lol
Yes! His left hand is very good considering it's his off hand.

Realize now the comparison was Charles Oakley not Oakfor. I was thinking the comparison was between players at similar ages and position and same draft picks in Okafor and Hernangomez.

Oakley was extremely physical. I don't know if a guy like that could even get away with playing how he did.

Yes this is what I see. I think Hernangomez is more craft, skill and smarts than he is physical or power. He's strong, but not someone that pushes people around. Still a rookie and can improve. Thus far, looks like a fantastic pick. Have to give it to Jackson and Gaines, they know how you scout. Porzingis, Hernangomez, Kuzminskas. These kids were great gets for this team considering at what point we got them. Looking forward to the Knicks having a draft pick next year. Makes you wonder what Phil and Gaines could have done had they had draft picks to work with in 2014 and 2016.
