Melo has been lacklustre lately and especially against the Suns. I understand off games but this has happened multiple games this season. I think it is Time the team looks for Melo less and Kristaps more. This isn't a vendetta against Melo but I do believe this would benefit everyone. His catch and shoot percentages have been fantastic but his moving shots or after dribbling percentages are awful. If Kristaps could attract the D and create open shots for Melo everyone wins, now this does not mean Kristaps has to completely carry everyone, this would be rash in his second year, with help coming from other places like Rose, Koq, Jennings, Melo and Lee they should all benefit from the attention Kp attracts. Tell me what you think of Melo taking a bit of a step down for the benefit of the team this season
Why "Label" it one vs the other. If Melo is hot, its his team. If rose is hot, its his team, if KP is hot...........
Granted, Melo is going thru a tough spell. Very well could by his rhythm is not in synch with Phils "2 seconds or less" as he might be having to think vs react. If its part of the process, and the knicks are still doing well, then play thru it.
Last night we lose rose early and Melo didn't not have it. But KP was a god and carried the team. Once fouled out, it was just Cold Melo left for heroics. Team needs multiple options unless your star is hot. And he is not. Could be injury.
Wolves went into Chicago and won a game. its the NBA, this happens.
Can they just be the Knicks and play a team game? Look for whoever is playing well on any given night instead of some stupid preordained pecking order? Are the Warriors squabbling over Curry's team or KD'S or klay's? No they just feed the players with the hot hand and take advantage of good flow on offense and unselfish team first mindset

If you do that you will kill the chemistry of the team. This team is Melo's team for now. KP still have a lot of things to prove. Also all of the the players can accept Melo as the leader. Will they accept KP? Remember Linsanity? Don't push it. KP will get his due but he must wait his turn.
I was forced to watch the Suns broadcast of the game and Eddie Johnson made an interesting comment while praising KP. He mentioned that it remains to be seen if he has the "clutch" gene. Melo and Rose have hit game winning shots this season. That's the next step in KP's development. He certainly made clutch shots down the stretch last night but has he hit the "dagger" shot yet in his young career to seal a victory? I remember he almost hit one last season against Charlotte, but has there been others yet? He also has to learn to stay out of foul trouble before we can have the "his team" discussion.
I also think we should just let things progress at it own pace instead of trying to fast track any of this. Remember, he has 1 1/4 years of NBA experience and he's only 21 (I think). Give it time.

Agree.
This KP's team or Melo's team is so agenda driven fans can feel better about their positions. Its so silly. Its the Knicks. I mean if your a fan are you rooting for them or not.

Will Kp get that chance though for the time being? That is more Melos job and specialty as he has shown, I would like them however to look to Kristaps some time for the final shot
These things usually happen naturally. KP can take over when he feels confident enough that he can be THE MAN. He stepped up in the PHX game and took on that role. He may fall back and step up the rest of the year until he eventually just stays the Primary option. There's no need to worry about it.
It shouldn't be Melo's or KP's team. The way Hornachek has designed things and with the Triangle also a part of the offense, we should be a team that gives multiple players chances. No one single player should have ownership or first digs. Much of it should be match up dictated.
Melo, KP and Rose (when he's healthy) all are equally potent based on match up and what the defense is giving us. What I do know is that Jennings or Rose and KP or Melo should be involved in almost all our plays in the halfcourt. We should be running plenty of screens using KP or Melo while Jennings or Rose handle the ball. This is the bread and butter of this team. The strength, along with the ability of the bigs to get rebounds on offense and second chance scores.
Melo's an all-star scorer, KP is an all-star level impact guy but neither is a superstar right now. Neither is dominant. The players like that are Lebron, Durant, Curry, Harden, Westbrook and maybe an Anthony Davis (though I am not sold on him of that level, think he is putting up great stats on a bad team like Cousins).
If Rose can stay healthy this is a good team. Really good. Not top 2 in the East, but after that they can be anywhere from third to sixth. Now the question becomes what if Rose is not healthy. Then we'll start to rely more on an erratic Jennings. We'll start to rely more on Melo isolations. And we'll rely on Porzingis to create too many tough looks. We'll still be competitive but closer to .500 ball.
Just wish Rose could get some momentum. If he can keep playing a few months without an injury set back he looks like he's on his way to becoming an all-star again. With three weapons like that, with the way Lee is shooting the ball and the way O'Quinn and Willy can score, we're a top 7 or 8 offense in the league. I just don't know if Rose can ever play a season healthy again.
Laws of nature say that KP will eventually become the focus on offense at some point...just don't see this as a big issue right now, and KP would say the same thing.
Play a team game...go with the hot hand if you need points at a big moment. KP maneuvered for a great shot at the end of the game...just missed it. Anthony has hit some of those big shots before, but you knew he wasn't feeling it yesterday.
I'm old enough to remember our two championship teams...never recall any fights over whose team it was.
The just wanted to win...
...I just want to win.

Good post and I agree with it. Rose is not very efficient but his speed and penetration keeps the defense honest. When he is contributing and healthy we are a much better team. Without him we fall back to that same iso heavy offense that wastes clock and hoists shots at the last second. I keep thinking Jennings can do better but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I agree.....I will also add that KP seems to step up more when Melo's not on the court. As soon as Melo steps in, KP goes back to being a role player. Thats going to be the next step for him. Rose for example is the same player, regardless if Melo plays or not. I saw Melo forcing it to KP near the end of the Phx game and KP was expecting Melo to come in and get the victory. The media with all these "who's team is it" are creating an uncomfortable atmosphere, without letting them grow into their own roles.
Make no mistake, its Dolan's team.
Phil Runs it.
Melo is an employee and Phil likes to needle his players that they have a job to do.
KP is also, but he is "ours". When a rook is drafted and developed there is a bond. We had it with Willis, drafted, ROY, and legend. Clyde, Phil, Bradley, the same. We adopted Debuschere, Earl, Oak, Bernard, Spree and others. We struggle to adopt guys like Marbles, H20 and Melo because of the MONEY paid to them. Starrphuch expectations and of course the arguements that ensue.
This is KP's team. He will inherit it thru time and accomplishment.
Phil has a good level of buy in from the veterans and they have the opportunity to win, and in the case of Rose and Jennings earn their status that contracts are measured by.
KP, the world is his his. This flies in his bedroom nightly.....

Last Night was proof KP is nowhere near being a teams focal point

To be fair, he was up against the best team in the league so I'm willing to give him a bit of a pass on this one. I'm just frustrated he didn't go after Draymond Green in the post and take advantage of his huge size advantage.

he tried posting up Green plenty. Green simply overpowered him and pushed him out. There will be a time when KP probably destroys him, but that aint now
Maybe we win
ONE game without Melo before we have to read another thread about making this someone else's team...
yes indeedy: 35 minutes, 8 points, 0 blocks, 0 assists. It's time for a logo change:
NY KristapKnicks
I can guarantee you, KP knows whose team IT IS.

I know Green is a unique player but he ain't Hercules out there. Plus I don't remember KP doing much damage even when Green wasn't on the court.

So in your mind, "slowly becoming KP'S team" = "KP will do well with Melo and Rose out"? I read the OP's message and do not see anything close to that in it.

I don't want to draw too many conclusions against the best team in the league, but just the threat having Melo/Rose on the court (even if they're not playing well) helps KP do his thing.

No, in my mind, and in black and white, the OP asked:
"Tell me what you think of Melo taking a bit of a step down for the benefit of the team this season"
Let the unicorn dominate and win a game all by his lonesome, before we have to "slowly" talk about stepping down, passing the torch, picking out a nice retirement village for OVERPAID DOUCHE GranpaMelo, etc, etc for the benefit of the team (That's at it's best level, since...well, the last time we won 50 games). That's all I'm saying.
Sorry, I'm channeling my inner tkf/dk7th in preparation for the next Knick losing streak...
