Knicks · Ron Baker appreciation thread (page 1)

This rookie can ball, his defense in the golden state game was top notch, even making Livingston miss his automatic mid range shot. He gave curry fits with his on the ball defense... he needs to keep playing hes going to make rookie mistakes, but that I can live with, his defense is top notch.. Phil struck gold with this kid.
fishmike @ 12/16/2016 12:07 PM
eh Im waiting to be impressed. GS never once thought they were losing that game, and I wasnt sold on his contributions vs. the Suns while his mistakes were rough. Not saying he cant be good, but I gotta see a lot more before he gets into the strike gold zone
Nalod @ 12/16/2016 12:12 PM
There was a reason why phil kept him. Not DInwiddle, Not Chalmers, not Norris Cole......Not Moochie Norris, Chris Childs, Chris smith, Cris Kringle, but Joe Ron Baker!!!!

WaltLongmire @ 12/16/2016 12:32 PM
Just needs more time on the court. You could see him loosen up and become more confident as the game went on. Seemed to be directing the offense at times, even when he didn't have the ball...waving people around.

I think he's at his best in an offense that has a lot of movement and cutting- something like the offense GS runs.

Puts in a lot of effort on D, and his athleticism is not bad at all.

Seems like he would be a good Triangle combo guard- not unlike Galloway was.

Hard to see him getting a lot more time on the court once Rose is back unless you let him play the 2 on the second unit with Holiday playing the 3 against certain opponents.

If you look at the 2016 draft, one in which not a single player is averaging more than 10PPG, you can make a case that Baker is an early 2nd Rnd talent...maybe even cracking the late 1st if he gets some consistent playing time.

His upside, as a 4 yr college player, might not be as great, but he looks like a future 20MPG glue guy player, who will never be great, but still have some great moments.

We will see...

Nalod @ 12/16/2016 12:40 PM
Big "Dragic" type kid. This is how phil likes his guards. Ron is Jennings replacement? Not sure the Master plan is as so detailed, but one thing is this kid has been on the roster day 1.
Sasha is the wiley vet. Ron is not an afterthought and PHil thinks Dleague is a waste of time for him. Dleague is a chucking league and players are out to make a name. Until it is fully a minor league system, it will remain as such.
GustavBahler @ 12/16/2016 12:49 PM
If there is a deal to be had with Minny, Im pretty sure Baker would be someone that Thibs would want in the deal. Im guessing. Seems like his kind of player. Don't want to see Baker traded, but I like the idea of developing Baker, as well as showcasing him. Baker went up last night against the best defense in the league, not surprising the rookie had some off moments.

Baker had some nice takes to the rim, looked for his shot a little more, which is welcome news. That was the biggest knock on his game IMO. After playing against a league leading defense, he might feel more comfortable trying to generate his own offense in the future. Hope so.

Im a huge Baker fan....He grew on me over time, since summer league. I made a mistake like most people and only looked at his offensive skills, which is average.

Baker is our best on the ball defender at the 1 position. The days of the small PGs are gone. So you need a 6'2 or 6'3 long arm, lateral quickness type of player.

I can see his peak as the PG version of Courtney Lee. Which is great for somebody that wasn't drafted.

Baker has needed minutes IMO the guy can't be expected to just come out blazing after not playing. That's why I wasn't too hard on Jeff for going with Baker longer than might have been warranted. The kid has talent and he's going to be needed. What's the point of playing Sasha and not playing Baker?

Holiday needed minutes to get his game going and we see how that worked out. Perhaps Baker can do the same thing. Both of them are good defenders and have solid overall skills and 3pt shooting. I see them as very similar and in the vein of C Lee. We need players like them.

Knixkik @ 12/16/2016 1:12 PM
He's going to be a solid role player. His defense is good and he can make shots. His pick and roll play is real weak right now but he looks like an nba player, no question.

So you know what GS was thinking about? The fact that Baker was a plus 8 two games in a row doesn't count because of what the opponents were thinking? Are you literally inside their heads? Don't be such a hater!

I like him. Heady

In addition you have to like the hair. He's got some lax-bro Flo going on

Rooting for his continued growth

No matter how strongly any of us feel about Baker, the great thing is that we've seen some really positive signs from all of our younger players. It's been awhile since we've seen that. Kind of reminds me of the Gallo, Chandler Knicks. There is no downside to this situation. Just be happy about it. Baker was a solid UDFA pick up.

Won't lie...I did not do much research on the 2016 draft because we didn't have a pick- so many of you have a better idea of some of the players drafted. Based on statistical performances during the regular season, and what I saw in SL, Baker stacks up well with many in this draft, and I think Plumlee might have been very late 2nd Rnd material, also.

Good job by Jackson and our scouts.

An appreciation thread for a rookie who played okay in one game where we got blown out?!? LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

He certainly didn't look like it was his second nba game where he was given minutes in a non blow out situation. As the 13th man on the roster and an undrafted rookie he has looked really good. The moment hasn't been too big for him. I thought he looked really good in the first half. I didn't get to see the second half but his play wasn't lucky shots etc. He just is solid, and plays pretty good defense. He also has nice size.

Agree with all your points but nothing about his one game performance or achievements as a Knick so far warrants an appreciation thread! lol Like the enthusiasm, though.

He lost the suns game IMO.. Im not knocking him and I think he has potential, but I cant take the 2 things right, 2 things wrong type, especially if it results in a lost.

I think One of the reason that catapult Lin into stardom, was the fact that we were winning (WITHOUT MELO) and he was making avg players around him better.

I don't get your take on this one. Baker was a bit shaky in his 1st real significant minutes but you can see he has some ability and the right mental make up. What is this "2 things right, 2 things wrong" stuff? Is that how you view Baker after a couple of games? Seems a bit quick to know if he's a mistake prone player. Besides the Knicks have plenty of opportunity to win the Suns game.

Exactly ...he's a rookie that has to learn . But there is no denying he is a nba defender arguably the best backcourt defender on this team... on the plus he is not a bad offensive player either.. after evaluating this rookie class, baker is right up there esp on defense, he held curry to 4-13 shooting actually out playing curry on both ends of the floor . Not saying baker is on the same planet as curry ... but as a lockdown defender he can give opposing guards fits on a nightly basis . Yes I think Phil struck gold, baker looks like a first round talent .when was the last time the knicks found a first round talent as a UDFA ???
