Knicks · Melo needs to step up as a leader (page 1)

This is my latest post for Elite Sports NY, I believe the only way the Knicks can turn it around is if Melo becomes a better leader what do you guys Think? https://elitesportsny.com/2017/01/11/new...

Great article. My thoughts exactly. Time for Melo to stop talking "we got to figure this out" and just lead by putting up the all round effort every game.

blah blah blah how many times a week do we hear if Melo just did this? He is what he is

It's just too late for Melo to change.
Clean @ 1/11/2017 9:53 PM
I rather him step up and ask for a trade. I don't think any team that is not stacked like the Cavs or Warriors can win with him being a major player.
Allanfan20 @ 1/11/2017 10:18 PM
We've been going through this losing for a really long time now. Melo's game and his role as a leader are exactly what we see now and aren't changing. Anyone expecting otherwise are setting themselves up for disappointment. Should we be trading him? At this point, I would say probably yes.
Welpee @ 1/11/2017 10:32 PM
I've defended Melo ever since he arrived but I'm about to jump off the bandwagon. He's capable of being the player we need him to be. He just ain't gonna do it.

Or any team not named the Warriors or Cavs regardless of who the players are. Other than them who is really competing? Spurs and Clips...maybe? Raptors if you're really high? It's not exactly a competitive league and with no real rebuild strategies that work under the CBA teams will continue to live in purgatory. I hope the Knicks get out of purgatory during my lifetime.

when has he ever? ive backed melo 100000% since he got here, but enough is enough. the guy isn't even looking to play team basketball anymore. he's not looking to play defense. every team in the league is zipping the ball around on offense, but not the knicks. the ball gets zipped around til melo touches it and then everyone stands still watches the chucking happen.

just like in denver, melo's welcome has worn thin.

Leadership isn't what's holding this team back. It is the lack of at least 3 all-stars and about 4 other starters/reserves that are above average. Without that it's currently not possible to compete. If you have that then some leadership is nice to have but probably not required.
Nalod @ 1/11/2017 10:51 PM
How many threads pleading for Melo to step up as a leader.
He has.
Problem is an ever changing roster, 4 coaching changes, and perhaps not in his DNA to be that guy.
Reality bites sometimes.

Right, constant tormiol and whirlwind around him and it's his job to sort it out for the organization..Nice, not in his DNA..

Forgot, he has had three Gm's as well. The regime of Walsh, Grunwald and Phil/Mills.

When will people realize that he can't lead. His idea of leadership is heroball.

He has had 5 coaches. MD, Woody, Fisher, Rambis, Hornacek.

I don't hate Melo as much as some guys on here... but I have to agree. He'll never be a leader. His idea of leading is holding the ball for ten seconds and then swishing a 20ft jumper.

He's a good player... but I don't think he can be the best player on even a playoff team anymore, let alone a contender.

An uncanny knack for getting everyone in the organization fired, traded and banished.

Dolan's match made in heaven

Totally disagree. This squad was built similar to the old Mavs, one superstar and a bunch of talented complimentary pieces. I'm not asking for this team to be in the NBA finals, but they have more than enough talent to be a playoff team with home court advantage in the first round. Lack of talent is NOT the problem with this team.
Nalod @ 1/12/2017 7:27 AM
He is the leader until another one emerges or is so anointed.

I'm not sure how you can totally disagree since your example was a franchise build over 10+ years in an NBA landscape that was totally different than it is now. They old Mavs had an established system in place with great roster balance, a great Coach and the right pieces. They also did not have vast yr on yr roster turnover, new coaches, GMs, etc. It also helps that the league was vastly different even that short a time ago. The old Mavs team also caught fire. Theye were over 50% from 3 shooting a lot of them for multiple rounds. They caught lightning in a bottle. It was fun to watch.

Talent is a problem with this team. Rose is a shell of his former self, Melo is in the Twilight of his career, and KP has a ways to go. The rest of the talent is middling or below average. The teams competing (only a handful) have established all Stars as their 2nd best player. This is what is required in the current landscape. It's not an opinion. It is a fact. It will remain a fact baring a miracle Rockets run. There hasn't even beeneed a team remotely constructed like the one you suggested to make a push in at least 5 years.

Exactly.

He is mentally soft. That is why teams know they can beat NY.

UNfortunately the problem now is that KP is learning from him and IMO is taking a step back right now. HE has played poorly over the last 2 weeks.
