If if we were to do a crazy trade, why not keep Melo and instead trade Rose for CP3? With an understanding that we would resign him to a monster contract and either win a chip with him and his best buddy Melo, or get stuck with an aged PG making $30m per year. The potential long term downside is there, but may be worth a gamble.

As for the Clips, they would be better off by not having to sign an aging PG to a long term max contract, plus have the option of re-signing a younger star PG who will get along with Blake better.

Clippers are a contender. Why would they do that especially for such little value?

Paul is out injured until March, and will opt out of his contract at the end of the season and ask for a 6-year mega monster deal. Rose gives them someone who is active, and a younger star PG option to re-sign in the offseason, with whom they could remain a contender for a longer time.

For the Knicks it gives a two year window to win a chip with a Melo-CP-KP superteam, at the price of spending the following 3-4 years in capped out purgatory.

When you see Rose, you see star? There really is no market for him, which is why people laugh at the idea of him pursing a max contract. That being said, I'd rather have an injured CP3 that bolts at seasons end than Rose, who doesn't really win you games. At least CP3 will be back for a playoff push.
