Knicks · Has the team "found" the coaching staff (page 1)

Wow. The players actually executed - Hornacek doesn't look like a coach who has "lost" the players. And defense! Rambis is a genius, no?
nixluva @ 1/19/2017 7:47 AM
I think this has slowly taken hold over the last 4 games since Jeff seemed to say "SCREW IT" and started doing things his way!!! If this team can continue to embrace Jeff's system I can see them growing together into a better team.

I actually think Phil was messing Jeff up with his input. LET JEFF BE JEFF!!!

I think Phil and Jeff both like ball and player motion basketball. They are on the same page.

I think Phil and Horny have been on the same page
The major difference was what to do with Noah and Melo
Without Noah we have better spacing and all 5 players are a threat
With Melo at 4, again more spacing

Maybe Horny and Phil gave Noah too much time to prove himself. That was a mistake
As was thinking Melo is a 3 he is a 4 in today's league

Even if we ran Triangle with KP at 5, Melo at 4, the spacing and way we would run it would be far more effective.

It's possible that they were on the same page all along but Phil IMO kind of crossed Jeff up with all the initial Triangle emphasis. They literally have dropped all of that of late and that's why I have been harping on it. The change is VERY clear IMO. They weren't running anywhere close to this much 4 Out PnR as we've been seeing over the last 4 games. They look much better playing this way and EVEN BETTER with Kuz and Baker getting in the mix along with Willy and Plumlee.

Noah can set screens and roll just fine but he doesn't have the ability to score as effectively in other ways that Willy has. The more minutes we play without Noah the more potent the team will be offensively. Also on D Noah refuses to closeout on shooters and that has weakened the defense. KOQ has the same issue in that he's scared to closeout. Willy and Plumlee will move their feet on D and that really helps the overall D.

Kuz amazingly has caught on with his D. He's statistically better than LT on both ends!!! Kuz simply MUST play major minutes for this team.

Does this pass the eye test? Really haven't zoned in on Cuz defensively and can't tell if he indeed has improved

Kuz moves well laterally, does a good job of staying in front of his man.

After one game?

knicks1248 @ 1/19/2017 1:32 PM
The Knicks can score with anyone. What I saw yesterday was communicating on defense, especially the 3 ball. I'm telling you now, kp and Noah on the cost along with melo, is a very bad defensive unit.

Holiday was like a +21, kp, melo, and Noah on the together always result in a minus. Even games we win

nyknickzingis @ 1/19/2017 3:36 PM
Nix - I looked at highlights and you are correct that they were running more 1/4 sets. Much less 2/3 which is Triangle like. They should keep it up. I like that we still go to the post, which is a huge part of the Triangle. Melo, Willy, even KP all are good match ups in the post. We shouldn't just run screen/roll. I liked the way Horny has put in different aspects so it's not alway high screen roll. However the spacing, yes you are right. It's definitely no longer Triangle. It's 1 in 4 out most of the time. For Rose that's what he needs to get space to drive. For Melo he needs that when he's the 1 in side. Same for Willy or even KP if they post up. We should absolutely keep the same spacing. It could make our offense go from a 105 a night average to 110. A few more open 3's will be available and the isolations for Rose or Melo or Willy/KP could also be much higher percentage looks. Hope this sticks.

Defensively it's all about effort and communication. I give Rambis no credit in doing good or bad. He's a pretty bad coach. What the Knicks need is to communicate and work harder. The coaching staff may now realize that they need quicker legs out there for rotation and that it should not all be about paint protection. Your 5 man can protect the rim if it's KP. You need to stay close on outside shooters and not let players get open looks. That's the thing that kills you in today's NBA. That's why starting quicker players who can move in rotations is important.

Did they lose 'em again?
