If O'Quinn, it might determine if we can facilitate a Melo trade to CLE. The difference in their respective salaries is $11 million, so if O'Quinn could effectively replace Tristan, Tristan could be re-routed to a third team that brings the Cavs their playmaker off the bench with minor implications for their payroll. Personally, I could see the Cavs having some interest in Tyreke Evans who could be their version of Shaun Livingston.

I do not see picking up NOs trash as fair comp for an unprotected pick. I believe Alex has an onorous contract as well. We are taking a salary dump for a pick that may be at the highest 4 or 5...if we were taking one bag of trash Asik ...maybe...but Alex as well.....not fair comp....trade exception doesn't really mean much unless you are trying match salaries....to give up KO too.....this is too much
Tristan's rebounding/defense took them to them to the finals already..He has an unbelievable motor and turns it on in the playoffs..KOQ question as an NBA player is effort..Does he bring it every night..Why would Cleveland trade one for the other?

I definitely think Tristan is the better rebounder and rim protector but that O'Quinn is the better passer and floor spacer. Are O'Quinn's strengths strong enough to offset Thompson's strengths? I don't know but I do know that the Cavs are leading the league in rebounds and could afford to take a hit in that department if it offered improvements in other areas. Plus, O'Quinn's contract is about $10 million cheaper, which allows the Cavs to bring in a ballhandler off the bench with the balance (e.g Tyreke Evans).

Alexis only makes $4 million per for the next 3 seasons. That's reasonable for a decent backup 5.
Asik does suck but it's the price to party. I think any pick that could be a lottery pick in this draft is worth the burden of Asik's contract. If we truly are rebuilding, then we'd need salaries like his to reach/maintain a payroll at the salary floor, anyway.
This is a salary dump deal that we come out a lot worse than going in. What are we doing Asik and Ajinca....if they were viewed as assets NO would have dumped them....we do not have the time or patience to operate as the leagues clearinghouse ala Philly circa 2012-2015..

We have been a dumpster-fire for nearly two decades. Why should we not look to tank in a season when we actually have a draft pick?

That's the point. We'd be trying to make the team sizeably worse in order to secure the best pick possible in the coming drafts.

Fair really has nothing to do with it. To get a trade going, Melo has to waive his NTC and there are salary cap constraints. Both create a very complicated situation where the Knicks will have to take back at least one bad contract. There isn't much way around it.

I disagree...we do not have to take by any bad contract without due compensation. We are giving the prized asset...yes Melo is older..but 45 pts don't grow on trees....I am not asking for two top 10 picks...but you got to pony up two unmovable contracts on their own ...Gallo and etc.
I rather keep Melo and let him walk than do a bad deal...

I think, they'd think they would be better, which is what matters. Personally, I'd see Love not making a difference for them, which would be great for us and what it'd mean for our lottery pick from them.
He's a more simplistic version of the deal, operating under the same premise of getting us another first round pick, getting the Cavs an additional playmaker and getting the Pelicans another star player...
