The thing is can Melo do that? Can he be #2? The answer is no because if he could then we would not be in this mess.
Yep- as they enter the twilight of their careers, players like Melo tend to go into denial that they're on the decline, and so keep hoisting up shots that fall less frequently (see Kobe)

if there is anything we can be certain of its Melo will NOT be taking any reduced roll to help the Knicks rebuild. He wants his shots. He wants his milestones. To think otherwise means you have not been paying attention.

Its not just about that. Melo resisted DAntoni too. Only way he wants to play is the wad Woodson played. Clear it out, force-fed Melo ball. Surround him with alpha males and let it play out. Melo is gonna 33 not 28. We can't do that anymore
Yeah, our window of contending with Melo is over. It's just about trying to build through the draft and find a coach and system that works for the talent that we have here. Melo will either get traded this summer or opt out next summer. I don't think it's a bad thing to keep him here, but I think the team could run a system that was better for the modern NBA and the talent on the roster.
didnt MDA try that with Melo? If you think about this what were Phil's comments? That he holds the ball too long. What made Melo go from DadMelo to ball stopper Melo? Did Melo quit on Phil like he did MDA?I would like to see Jeff coach a team where he doesnt have a star player with a NTC he has to cater to else he risk loosing the lockerroom.
I'd also like to see him coach without the impediment of the Triangle/Rambis baggage.
I don't actually think that a little more Triangle is a major problem for this team. KP and Willy actually like the Triangle and play well when it's run properly. The key is going to be getting players that have the Skill, BB IQ and Defensive ability to lead to winning ball. This is never going to be a PURE Triangle team again. There will always be some of Hornacek's uptempo style and PnR involved in this offense. Nothing wrong with the Triangle as a BASE they can go to.
The key is when we can get Melo out of here and replace him with a talented SF that can play TEAM BALL. They don't have to be the same ISO threat that Melo is. Often those that support Melo give too much attention to his Elite ISO ability but for a team to win you can do that with a guy like Paul Millsap who is more well rounded and team oriented. There will be SF's in this draft that can give this team the scoring and D they need from that spot and also be more athletic too.
No 20mm $ contracts for anyone. The only guy that we mightve had a chance on was Jrue Holiday but that isnt happening now. So keep M<elo and bring in
1. a 6th man
2.a Pro PG who can shoot the 3 ball and play D
3. atleast 1 good pro defender
4. Youth speed and athleticism that can be used now from the draft
wonder how many times this will change before nba free-agency starts

You gotta explain this list...
1. A sixth man? What? Ron Baker not enough for you? Lee, Holiday? Give me a name bro.
2. A pro pg? 3 and D? Again who?
3. 1 good product defender? Like who? What position?
4. The draft is obvious depending on where we pick
BRIGGS wrote:100% That is the bottom line. I think if we are SMARTER this year in free agency--spend lesss --get more production--have a great draft--we can change the differential. We need an athletic upgrade and some scoring to reduce the load on Melo.
Stupid thought process. Why on god's green earth do we want to have Melo around a young impressionable team that should be focused on developing team chemistry and TANKING.
What are you hoping to get by keeping Melo around --- 4 more wins?
Get rid of his ass as soon as humanly possible.

I am not a blame guy... but the time for this has come. Time to just move on. Worrying about getting the best deal or maximizing Melo here is nothing more than doubling down on a mistake.. just move on.
No to Melo need to move on if the Knicks suck at least it will be in an effort to develop talent. Not interested in band aids it doesn't work.
