Knicks · Frank Ntilikina: Is he the perfect triangle PG? (page 1)

Knixkik @ 3/1/2017 3:26 PM
All this talk around the triangle, seems like it makes sense to look at players who fit. Obviously KP and Willy do. Melo will determine when he cuts ties with the Knicks. Baker and Randle might fit as reserve guards. But seems more and more logical that Ntilikina could be the guy. Obviously it's a fluid situation depending where we ultimately land in the draft, but i think it will be somewhere between 6 and 9. We will miss Fultz, Ball, Jackson, and Smith i am assuming, but Ntilikina, while not a sure thing, is probably one of the best fits of the PG group. He's tall, athletic, can play both guard spots, unselfish, improving shooter, and has elite defensive upside. Seems like a more talented version of a player Phil might target, Jrue Holiday. Given the European success in the draft, i am sure they are spending as much or more time evaluating him as any team in the league right now. We don't know as much about him as we do other PG prospects, but he seems like a pretty good option. Hopefully he doesn't move himself out of reach in workouts.

I doubt Ntilikina as young as he is would be ready to handle the role of running the Triangle right away. Perhaps in time a kid like him could be developed but I think Lonzo Ball, Fultz, Isaiah Briscoe or Bruce Brown could handle the role.

he's got nice physical tools, and has played very well against similar aged competition, but as a pro he's got very little to look at. It will come down to workouts and what kind of head he's got on his shoulders. He's a nice prospect. I mentioned him some time ago as a guy who might fall if we are stuck picking 7-10 and the other high caliber wings are off the books.

I read that his jumper has improved. I like his size and wingspan, but he is listed at 170 lbs. The weight alone makes me believe he'll need time to develop. Plus, it doesn't sound like he has a lot of experience playing against professionals in Europe. How big of a jump will he have to take to handle the physicality of the NBA? I like the fact that he should be able to swing between both guard positions in time. But I don't know if we have the right infrastructure in place to develop him.

He is shooting it well this season. 44% from 3pt. And i do have confidence in Hornacek's ability to develop guards.

The more I see of Lonzo Ball, the more I think he's really the perfect Triangle PG.

I have to see more of Frank though. Only seen a few highlights reels.

Ball is mentally ready for a lead role in the Triangle. I also think Isaiah Briscoe and Bruce Brown could be good in the Triangle. All are long, strong leaders, defenders with all around skills.

George Hill

But man he will be expensive

EnySpree @ 3/1/2017 6:18 PM
Ntilikina looks like a fundamentally sound Jamal Crawford... Not sure if he's a pure point. I think he's a point in a shooting guards body... he could run a team in spurts but you really don't want him the full time pg. He seems like a project though

I like D Fox. He's a big time facilitator who has speed and an after burner. I think he will be around when the Knicks pick. He is a scorer and a facilitator. Can penetrate and run up and down all day long. His jumper isn't as good as the Frenchmans but playing for Calipari helps the NBA transition whereas the Frenchman plays against slower cards on utube videos
WaltLongmire @ 3/1/2017 7:09 PM
I mentioned him in another thread...Good size, can defend, can handle the ball...have to see what he is like in terms of shooting from the outside.

Have to start watching some clips/games of his...I bet he is on our radar.

Interesting...didn't know his shooting had improved...

I always like foreign players because they tend to be more team oriented, but this guy is also a very good athlete... Might be a good combination if we are at 7-10.

Scouting reports on him is he's a pass first PG. And I'm sure he's a bit of a project, but if the triangle sort of de-emphasizes the pure PG, and the focus is defense, shooting, and ball movement from that position, than he fits all the requirements. He should be a good defender right away. But other than being built like Crawford, they are nothing alike. More like jrue Holiday I think.

Just because he's fast and left handed? He's an elite passer and defender, 2 things jennings isn't.

No, terrible outside shot. Didn't see such an "elite" passer

I see your point but you probably forget that Jennings scored 55 well before he went down with achiles. I think he will be better facilitator and scorer. Strong defensive skills lighting quick and steals the ball.

nyknickzingis @ 3/1/2017 10:21 PM
I hope whomever we draft has great defensive and 2-way potential.
After this horrible defensive season, I want most of our moves to address the defense.

From that end, this kid Frank looks like he has good defensive clay. I just don't know if he's ready to play. Likely he may need a year off the bench in a backup role. Means we'll need to find a starting vet PG who doesn't mind losing minutes to a young prospect and being a mentor.

yellowboy90 @ 3/1/2017 10:54 PM
I am trying to think of young players that succeeded in the triangle for their first few years and all I can come up with is Bynum, Armstrong and H. Grant.

It is possible that by the time Ntilikina picks up the triangle that Phil and the triangle will be gone. So, is it smart to draft a player based on an offense that might not be played in the long run.

IMO,The need to do an entire evaluation and not Triangle specific.
