Knicks · Your Mock 2017 - 2018 Off-Season (page 1)

I saw this on RealGM and thought it would be fun to do here since we're a smaller community so we can give people props if they are right or wrong

---

Draft Scenario's

Who is your selection if stay at the 6th pick?

Who are you targeting with our two 2nd Rounders?

---

Trade Scenario's

Carmelo Anthony also let's you know in his exit meeting that he is willing to parting ways in the off-season if that is the direction management wants to take, but would like to finish out his career as a Knick. He gives you a list of Los Angeles being his preference, Cleveland, Boston, San Antonio, Golden St. and Washington as the only teams he'd be willing to waive his NTC...

Do you continue to build around him? Or do you move him? Where and for what? If you were to acquire an additional pick in this year's draft, who would you target at that selection?

Do you also consider moving Courntey Lee? O'Quinn? What can you reasonably get for them? Is it better to hold on for now?

---

Free Agent Scenario's

Do you consider bringing back Rose on a discounted deal? Or renounce his cap hold and open up potentially $24mil in cap space?

Do you cut into that max cap space by re-signing Justin Holiday? If so, for how much?

With your cap space, what do you plan to do with it? What FA's are you realistically bringing in and for how much? Do you instead use this space as flexibility to take on unwanted contracts as a means of acquiring additional assets? What kind of deal/asset return are we looking at, if that's the direction you choose.

---

What does your roster look like heading into the 2017-2018 season? And what is the direction you are taking this franchise in moving forward?

---

Obviously, this isn't something set in stone, peoples minds change, especially when reading other peoples ideas and opinions. The idea of this thread was to basically combine our "FA Wishlist" and "Draft wishlist" threads, seeing just where (and how realistic) our board stands heading into an important off-season for Phil and company.

Do you cut into that max cap space by re-signing Justin Holiday? If so, for how much?

From what I understand Knicks can use their capspace THEN re-sign Holiday so long as the deal is no more than the MLE (8.5M per year or so). He is an early bird free agent, meaning we can keep him using early bird rights. We can actually do a couple of things in free agency.

Situation 1: Re-sign Rose using bird right, re-sign Holiday using early bird rights and then pursue a free agent with the MID LEVEL EXEMPTION which starts around 8.5 M a year. This gives us the most talent, but not sure if keeping Rose would ever be the right idea. In this scenario we "add" without losing. We keep Rose and Holiday, two of our most athletic and best guards, and then add a MLE level free agent. It does cap us out and fully invests in the team we would move forward with after that.

Situation 2: Let Rose walk, lose his rights, open up 25 or more M in capspace and pursue free agents. We could agree to a deal with Holiday and keep him so long as the deal is within the MLE range as he's still an early bird FA. This is likely the way we go. This allows us some cap flex moving into 2018. I can see Phil do what he did in 2015. One longterm contract for a starter (Like RoLo) and the other contract as 1 year deals. Keep Holiday if the money is right otherwise let him walk.

Situation 3: If Holiday's market value is very high, we can dip into the capspace to keep him over the MLE. This means we have to let Rose walk, and use the 25M (or so) space to keep Holiday at above MLE salary. I do not see us ever doing this, but we could if we wanted.

Another interesting aspect is Melo's possible trade. If Melo is traded could we open some more cap room via a trade? If we trade Melo we have to do it by draft day or July 1. We can not go into free agency without knowing for sure what the team is going to be like the next year. I think the Melo decision comes very soon.

dacash @ 4/10/2017 7:38 AM
if melo can be convinced to be dad melo come off the bench, why not trade every one else oquinn, lee, kuz, thomas and randle and pumlee for low first round picks . rose is gone .PERIOD.
if u can convince melo to come off the bench with noah( who by god's light will finally be healthy)sign holiday to a nice mle contract 8 to 10 million a year. keep developing ron but also sign a vet point guard like deron williams( i know he wont come here) that might be a nice bench of vets than can play for 12-15 minutes a game; melo, noah, williams, holiday heck long as we dreaming sign pj tucker move melo to pf and thats a nice bench 5 of vets except for holiday but he smart enough. Cause we dreaming an all.
Now this tricky draft , i say, and im usually very wrong about these things( okafor was cant miss in my eyes he has a big but)give sacramento a chance to move up sweeten it with a few players like kuz, lee.oquinn, thomas randle pick ya choice; and get thier picks and pick the big long armed french kid and malik monk
pg and shooting guard ......... BUT WAIT THERES MORE!!
What ever players we didnt give sacramento or trade get packaged with our two second rounders to a team with a nice mid pick say indiana or someone and pick the other jj justin jackson small forward.
so we have the starting five and vet back ups.
long as we posing hypothetically lets just get a brand new team of kp6, billy, frenchie, monk, and the other jj
franco12 @ 4/10/2017 8:29 AM
renounce Rose's contract, then block his & his agents phone number on my cell phone.

I offer Holiday 3 years at $3m per, and not 1 cent over.

He played a part in helping us win 30 games, but I could find a bum in the NBDL or undrafted that would do the same or better.

Get our pick Louis Labeyrie over for the summer camp, find out if he can stick.

Not a CBB fan, so no idea about picks - but with Labeyrie & 3 picks, that is pretty much it for roster spots.

If I can trade Melo to the Clippers for Crawford & Rivers- I do that and hope I can redirect Crawford.

NardDogNation @ 4/10/2017 9:11 AM
Do a three team trade with the Clippers and Thunder. Trade Melo and Lee to LAC; JJ Redick (sign-and-trade) and Austin Rivers to OKC; Victor Oladipo, Jamal Crawford, 2019 and 2020 first round pick swaps (via LAC) to NYK.

Hopefully Miles Plumlee walks (I figure the T'Wolves being a suitor), leaving DEN no backup big. Then we can trade Kyle O'Quinn, Mindaugas Kuzminskaus and $3 million to them for Juan Hernangomez.

Using our cap space, we absorb the balance of DeMarre Carroll and Corey Joseph's contracts for Lance Thomas. The Raptors starters alone will put them over the luxury tax, which will force them to move guys like Carroll and Joseph for more cost effective assets like a Lance Thomas in order to re-sign Lowry, Ibaka, Tucker and Patrick Patterson. Maybe we could even get TORs pick in that haul, in which case I'd target Terrence Ferguson or any blue chip talent that falls out of the lottery, which seems to happen every year (see Skal Labesserie, Bobby Portis, Rodney Hood, etc.)

Without knowing who would be available with the 6th pick, I'd go BPA and let the chips fall where they may. I'd be estatic with Jayson Tatum, should he slide, because I think we need a guy who can get his own shot and be a good defender at the swingman spots next to KP. My wishlist after him (ranked in order) would be Dennis Smith Jr., Johnathan Isaac and De'Aaron Fox. Any of them would suffice.

STARTERS
PG: Corey Joseph
SG: Victor Oladipo
SF: Jayson Tatum (depending on what happens with the draft)
PF: Kristaps Porzingis
C: Willy Hernangomez

ROTATION
G: Chasson Randle
G: Ron Baker
F: DeMarre Carroll
F: Juan Hernangomez
C: Joakim Noah

BENCH
G: Jose Calderon
G: Jamal Crawford
F: Maurice Ndour
F: TBD (possibly Terrence Ferguson if TOR gives up their pick)
C: Marshall Plumlee

6th Draft Ntilikina
Draft & Stash players for the second round (Willy worked well)
Trade O'quinn for a mid-first rounder and draft Justin Jackson (looking at blazers at 16)
Trade Carmelo Anthony to the Clippers for Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford and a future first and a pick swap
Overpay Joe Ingles on a deal (that ends in 2020) to act as the point forward in the triangle
Trade Lance for Mario Henzonja and future 2nd rounders
Let Holliday and Rose walk

Your 2017-18 New York Knicks

C-Guillermo Hernangomez/ Noah/ Plumlee
PF-Kristaps Porzingis/ Justin Jackson / ???
SF- Joe Ingles/ Kuz / ???
SG-Courtney Lee/ Ntilkina/ Henzonja
PG-Austin Rivers/ Crawford/ Baker

That team isn't particularly good but that is ok, progress is slow motion and all the key pieces are still a few years from their primes (aka a lot of young teams need time to develop). This team spend the whole year focused on learning the triangle, but also quasi-tanking for a chance to draft Luka Doncic. Basically I think Doncic is looking that good tanking for him should be the goal for next year. Next year though the team gets a reputation as a very good passing team that plays defense.

The best part is the year after they pay KP and Willy (2019) . Noah’s and Ingles’ contracts would all come off the books (2020) allowing the knicks to go after a marquee FA to put next to their young core. Sort of how the warriors got Iggy to put around there core.

reub @ 4/10/2017 5:40 PM
Draft Isaac and sign Jrue. Our defense would be great. We'd compete for a championship.
Knixkik @ 4/10/2017 5:40 PM
I don't want to see the Knicks get too fancy this offseason. Continuity and building off of the young group is the key. I think Melo to LAC with Rivers coming back is the likely scenario. Draft one of the elite guards and resign Holiday and Baker. Send O'Quinn for a early 2nd round pick. Grab Hart, Blossomgame, and a draft and stash with the 3 2nd round picks. Build from there.
jskinny35 @ 4/10/2017 6:32 PM
I would draft Isaac (assuming Fox, Ball, Faultz and Jackson are off board) at 6. Draft best available Euros to stash for other picks...

Trade Melo to Clippers and take A.Rivers and try to get Reddick or pick - accept Crawford only if no other deals available.

I would resign J.Holiday (reasonable price) as I think he plays both sides and seems to fit what Phil is trying to do

I would help Rose pack and wish him a speedy recovery!

I would support Laberyie joining to see if he's ready

If possible to trade Noah, I'd include O'Quinn to get it done.

Starters Reserves
Hernangomez Noah, O'Quinn, Plumlee
Porzingis Labeyrie, N'Dour
L.Thomas Isaac, Kuz
Reddick C.Lee, Holiday
A.Rivers Randle, Baker

Vmart @ 4/10/2017 7:58 PM
I think Phil will trade Melo and get another first round pick and possibly draft Terrance Ferguson. We probably will get a sf and a sg in the draft.

Next season starting line up
Probably looks like

KP
Isaac
WH
Ferguson
Rivers

Bench:
Crawford
Baker
O'Quin
Holiday
Kuz
Noah
Sasha
