Honestly, KP willl need to be at least 26 before he will be strong enough to stand up.
Are you talking about far away from being a good team? Cuz that's not really what we're talking about. When you're rebuilding it's not about INSTANT contention as soon as you put the new core of the team together!!! We'll be adding more rookies and overall getting younger. WTF are thinking is supposed to happen?
Every team that thinks this way, has been in the same position for the last 5 yrs. That's why im so confused as if we're going to be and exception.

The Knicks will still have some Vets tho! This will be a fairly balanced roster in terms of youth and experience. Removing the poorest defenders and replacing them with 2 Way players can have a very positive impact.

The title of this thread is literally "We are way further along then it looks in the rebuild"
Way to negative man. You need to see the bright side of the team.
I think a lot of people have convinced themselves Melo is the problem, and some blame Rose, too. Without realizing that there is almost nothing beyond them on the roster. I like Willy and KP... we don't even know yet if they can start next to each other.
People here clamor for rebuild and then get impatient the day after the season ends. It's going to take several years and involve a fair amount of luck in the draft.
Let's take it one step at a time and see if we can actually trade Melo first. And if we can get a good draft pick.
When we get to that point, I will start to feel more optimistic. Right now, I'm still mad we finished the season 4-3 when going 0-7 would've given us sole possession of the 4 spot in the lotto. Instead we're tied for 6th.
we a 31 win team. Thats what it is. one can only tank but so much. each team is different.
One game matters? We beat SAS here a while back. they all matter.
It all comes down to how KP moves forward. We will have a chance to compete when he becomes a true star. And how well we do in this draft. This offseason is the most important from a rebuilding standpoint. The draft and internal improvements will make or break this team long-term.

what makes you come to these conclusions? Dude has played 1 year in the league.
I just don't know how you can write a player off so quickly. Willy has his deficiencies but I don't see them holding him down

I'm not writing him off, and I didn't mean it as an insult, I like him a lot. It's just we always do this - we have a good rookie and then pin all these gigantic expectations on them, why can't we just appreciate them for what they are? Willy has a very nice, polished skill set, he's not mega athletic, so I don't think he has vast scope to get too much better. It's not a put down

Yeah, sadly I couldn't even enjoy that SAS win, because it messed with the tank. The last games I was able to enjoy this year were in December when the team was playing well. The random wins in February, March, and April were depressing. The Spurs looked hungover that game, anyone pointing to that game as a sign that the Knicks rebuild is on track is going to be disappointed. [/agenda]

It's a put down to say a player won't improve much, especially one so young.
There may be some people that put giant expectations on players but I don't see that with Willy. IMHO you just put giant expectations on Willy, but in the opposite direction.

Willy had a Defensive Rating of 107 in his rookie year. Just for reference Marc Gasol had a Defensive Rating of 108 the 1st couple of seasons and then 103 and then 99 and 98. So players can and do improve as they develop.
