I think buying him out would be the worse thing the knicks could do. It would literally be cutting off their nose (cutting a player who averages more than 20 a game and is an elite scorer) for nothing. We're not a very attractive FA destination. So cap space is almost irrelevant until we have a core that could be attractive to FA. I actually would prefer Phil take on some dead weight and move melo for picks and youth then bottom out at least 1 more year and try to be in the Bamba, Ayton, Doncic range in the draft.

He is owed 54 mil for the next two years. If he is traded that jumps to 63 mil. The amount, ntc and trade kicker give you an idea of just how bad the contract Phil gave him was. If Melo gets traded to a state without income tax he could make an extra 15 mil with the trade kicker and no state income tax.

Your missing the point, how many teams had the money to do what they did? Bought out Billups who was able to play? Then turn around and sign another player? Most teams don't burn money like that.

Its predicated on this concept:
They are paying Bosh and getting nothing. They could have melo instead of nothing. Melo is not the savior, but he could have put them in the playoffs.
Miami was the hottest team in the league in the second half of the season. They could trade Winslow and their 14th pick and it does nothing to the team that finished red hot. It just adds melo.
Making the playoffs and going into second round is profitable for teams.
Miami is not a great sports town and they have a good core of fans, but not when they suck. If they can trade Bosh for Wade Im sure they would.
BUt they could not last year.

Melo is like Bosh, dead weight on the cap. The 1 in a million chance of Bosh ever playing again is worth it.
Since Melo has an NTC, Im not so sure he would go to a Miami team without Wade or LeBron. Im guessing a "super friends" situation is his first choice, a playoff team thats close to contending second. Miami doesn't fall into either category.

Hypothetically, to market conditions, factoring in the previous Biedrins/Rush/Iggy trade to Utah and when Cleveland essentially bought a pick by absorbing Baron Davis' dead contract and also that these were in the previous CBA, I'd say it would look something like this

Some smaller pieces would need to move to get the salaries to work out, but the Knicks would not be getting Winslow and they wouldn't be getting this years pick. If the Heat traded for Melo, assuming he'd waive his NTC, the Heat would commit to gun for it for two years. They would need Winslow and that pick to push now as help for now or acquire other assets.
The other quite bizarre scenario would be to move Noah and O'Quinn for Bosh. This would be sort of odd, but the Heat might weigh out getting a 15 minute a night player for what is a dead contract and a 35 million cash hit. For an extra 19 million over what they had to pay anyway in cash, they'd equalize the last three years of Noah's deal. That 19 million across three years might be more palatable than a 35 million cash hit, then paying 26 million a year TWICE for two years for the same cap space hold. For the Knicks, it would be unloading Noah and his bad contract for 35 million in cash. Which is quasi form of amnesty. Not likely to happen, the Heat could likely use their cap space better, but I suppose it's an interesting thought discussion when it's just about saving cash over getting actual help.

The mention of Bosh playing is if he tries, the insurance considerations are massive. No, he won't play, but if he is cleared by a doctor to play........the insurance goes away. He is getting paid either way.

BRIGGS, if you've read any of my mental diarrhea in the past years, you would know I keep your words of wisdom close at all times. I suppose hope in the form of a 1st rounder is better than no hope at all, although I didn't notice too many mentions of getting a draft pick from Miami for taking Bosh. I'm just a bit tired of our historical bent of trading away our best player for piles of useless dog poop.
